Zusammenfassung: | The needle arts are traditionally associated with the decorative, domestic, and feminine. Stitching the Self sets out to expand this narrow view, demonstrating how needlework has emerged as an art form through which both objects and identities - social, political, and often non-conformist - are crafted. Bringing together the work of ten art and craft historians, this illustrated collection focuses on the interplay between craft and artistry, amateurism and professionalism, and re-evaluates ideas of gendered production between 1850 and the present. From quilting in settler Canada to the embroidery of suffragist banners and the needlework of the Bloomsbury Group, it reveals how needlework is a transformative process - one which is used to express political ideas, forge professional relationships, and document shifting identities. With a range of methodological approaches, including object-based, feminist, and historical analyses, Stitching the Self examines individual and communal involvement in a range of textile practices. Exploring how stitching shapes both self and world, the book recognizes the needle as a powerful tool in the fight for self-expression |

Exploring how stitching shapes both self and world, the book recognizes the needle as a powerful tool in the fight for self-expression Geschichte 1850-2008 gnd rswk-swf Needlework & fabric crafts / bicssc Needlework / History Needlework / Social aspects Expression in art Bildstickerei (DE-588)4006646-0 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Art brut (DE-588)4234483-9 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitstechnik (DE-588)4002786-7 gnd rswk-swf Stickerei (DE-588)4133489-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschlecht (DE-588)4020547-2 gnd rswk-swf Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 gnd rswk-swf Selbstbild (DE-588)4077349-8 gnd rswk-swf Strickarbeit (DE-588)4358874-8 gnd rswk-swf Electronic books (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 2015 Halifax Nova Scotia gnd-content Stickerei (DE-588)4133489-9 s Strickarbeit (DE-588)4358874-8 s Arbeitstechnik (DE-588)4002786-7 s Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 s Geschlecht (DE-588)4020547-2 s Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Geschichte 1850-2008 z DE-604 Bildstickerei (DE-588)4006646-0 s Selbstbild (DE-588)4077349-8 s Art brut (DE-588)4234483-9 s Amos, Johanna (DE-588)1209100800 edt Binkley, Lisa (DE-588)120910105X edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 9781350070387 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, PDF 9781350070394 https://doi.org/10.5040/9781350070417?locatt=label:secondary_bloomsburyCollections Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Abstract with links to full text |
