The symbol of the bee and its products in the Romanian popular culture The work is the first approach to a seemingly pragmatic subject from the perspective of symbolic sublimation, giving depth and charm to human thinking. The popular culture is natural, dependent on the intimate desire of the self to understand and to be understood. It is spontaneous and it is very close to the environment in which it is born and within which it coexists. Different from the cultured one and implicit with the nature, the popular culture constitutes itself in an exciting and necessary object. The bee, the insect that seems to have come from the heavens, is given to the man to nourish him, to cure him, to charm him, to be his role model. The paper aims, by means of examples, to put the basis of, to convince of the presence of the bee as a symbol together with its products in the Romanian popular culture and not only. We presented the bee and its products from the perspective of the symbolic projection in the Romanian popular thinking, and where the material allowed us, with the examples from the universal literature, from the perspective of our knowledge about it, considering, as a basis, the analysis of the ethnological material published until the date of preparation of the paper (199$, the field harvested by us over the years, as well as the material unitarily collected on the basis of unique questionnaires of the Ethnographic Atlas of Romania team, and to the extent that it helped us, we also extrapolated to the lexicon of the cultural anthropology. After introducing in the explanation of
our approach we developed following chapters: the bee and sacred symbol; the bee 243
and the symbol light and the illumination; the bee and the ascensions symbols; the bee and the spirited symbol; the bee and the passing thresholds (birth, wedding, burial; the bee and the symbol of the cosmos, the tree and the house-hive isomorphism; the bee and the aquatic symbol, the bee and the lunar symbol; the bee and the food symbol. The community through symbol reveals its condition (social, biopsychic, historical) and its relations with the nature, with the society, with the cosmos. The symbol expresses ideas, a result of the human attitude and thinking about the world. Through symbol, it transmits what it understands, how it understands, how the unknown, the impalpable, the unseen can penetrate. With all the amazing achievements of the science, the man is dependent, he is subordinate to the symbols, otherwise his inner world would be poor, his life would be dull, unsatisfactory, and they are able to manifest the intimate ways of the being. The popular productions express the conception and vision of the man about everything around him, about his place in the universe, practical and metaphysical experiences accumulated for generations. The popular culture was the basis for understanding the complexity of the problem and, at the same time, only it gave us the thought, produced our impulse. The symbol of the bee is found in all genres of folklore, because through them the man has expressed his general concepts, the feeling. The bee is present in the folklore and imagination of many nations. The Romanian symbolism, itself a heir to some ancient beliefs, is considered
to be the forerunner of many symbols of the great ancient civilizations, giving it a unique and authentic value. The explanation through symbol, giving up to the logic of the concrete, is done when the 244
Romanian peasant fails to unravel the unknown, when he cannot penetrate a secret. Then he gives freedom to the spirit to free itself from the immediate laws of logic, of the immediate pragmatic, and gives free way to the thinking to ascend to the unknown by approaching it, plunging into it through symbol. The selection of the treated symbols had in view their importance for life, and actually their number is greater, but the need for a good understanding, for tying a developed idea and, of course, and our preferences, made us stop to those developed by us... The symbol of the bee and its products in the Romanian popular culture The work is the first approach to a seemingly pragmatic subject from the perspective of symbolic sublimation, giving depth and charm to human thinking. The popular culture is natural, dependent on the intimate desire of the self to understand and to be understood. It is spontaneous and it is very close to the environment in which it is born and within which it coexists. Different from the cultured one and implicit with the nature, the popular culture constitutes itself in an exciting and necessary object. The bee, the insect that seems to have come from the heavens, is given to the man to nourish him, to cure him, to charm him, to be his role model. The paper aims, by means of examples, to put the basis of, to convince of the presence of the bee as a symbol together with its products in the Romanian popular culture and not only. We presented the bee and its products from the perspective of the symbolic projection in the Romanian popular thinking, and where the material allowed us, with the examples from the universal literature, from the perspective of our knowledge about it, considering, as a basis, the analysis of the ethnological material published until the date of preparation of the paper (199$, the field harvested by us over the years, as well as the material unitarily collected on the basis of unique questionnaires of the Ethnographic Atlas of Romania team, and to the extent that it helped us, we also extrapolated to the lexicon of the cultural anthropology. After introducing in the explanation of
our approach we developed following chapters: the bee and sacred symbol; the bee 243
and the symbol light and the illumination; the bee and the ascensions symbols; the bee and the spirited symbol; the bee and the passing thresholds (birth, wedding, burial; the bee and the symbol of the cosmos, the tree and the house-hive isomorphism; the bee and the aquatic symbol, the bee and the lunar symbol; the bee and the food symbol. The community through symbol reveals its condition (social, biopsychic, historical) and its relations with the nature, with the society, with the cosmos. The symbol expresses ideas, a result of the human attitude and thinking about the world. Through symbol, it transmits what it understands, how it understands, how the unknown, the impalpable, the unseen can penetrate. With all the amazing achievements of the science, the man is dependent, he is subordinate to the symbols, otherwise his inner world would be poor, his life would be dull, unsatisfactory, and they are able to manifest the intimate ways of the being. The popular productions express the conception and vision of the man about everything around him, about his place in the universe, practical and metaphysical experiences accumulated for generations. The popular culture was the basis for understanding the complexity of the problem and, at the same time, only it gave us the thought, produced our impulse. The symbol of the bee is found in all genres of folklore, because through them the man has expressed his general concepts, the feeling. The bee is present in the folklore and imagination of many nations. The Romanian symbolism, itself a heir to some ancient beliefs, is considered
to be the forerunner of many symbols of the great ancient civilizations, giving it a unique and authentic value. The explanation through symbol, giving up to the logic of the concrete, is done when the 244
Romanian peasant fails to unravel the unknown, when he cannot penetrate a secret. Then he gives freedom to the spirit to free itself from the immediate laws of logic, of the immediate pragmatic, and gives free way to the thinking to ascend to the unknown by approaching it, plunging into it through symbol.
