Summary This book is dedicated to a distinguished painter, a true classic of Lithuanian art Raimundas Sližys (1952-2008). Already several years after Raimundas’ gradua tion from the State Art Institute of Lithuania (presently Vilnius Academy ofArt), it was clear to many that this artist’s work would end up in the treasury of Lithuanian painting. Maybe even to those who were shaking their heads sceptically at the time. This book tells its story through Raimundas Sližys’ paintings and drawings, ac companied by the reminiscences of people who knew and loved the artist. In the texts and photographs included in the book, Raimundas Sližys and those who remember him look the reader straight in the eyes, honestly and confidently. The painter was a favourite model of different artists and photographers, and often posed nude without shame. We shall accept his rules of the game: let this be a sign of true respect for Raimundas Sližys’ personality and creative work. Mural studies under the famous representative of Lithuanian monumental art professor Sofija Veiverytė - had a profound influence on Raimundas Sližys’ work and shaped his unorthodox approach to painting. He painted on canvas as if long ing for a wall and imagining the presence of the latter. A perfect wall - faultlessly primed, polished and prepared alfresco, buonfresco. The layer of paint in Raimundas’ painting was never thick. The painter also disliked the earthy colours so typical of that time’s Lithuanian painting. He favoured light local colours, especially pink- the dissident colour ofthe time. It seems that pink
was understood solely as a colour of bad taste back then it was avoided in all spheres of art. Portrait became the genre that helped Raimundas Sližys to find the points of departure of his creative work, and he often used it as an arena for experiments. This is a fairly rare phenomenon - painters are more likely to choose the still-life and landscape genres for this purpose. In portraits of both close and less familiar people, the painter boldly transformed and even caricatured their features. He was not too concerned about whether the portrayed liked and understood the result. The book matches Raimundas’ personality, being very colourful. It focuses on the painter’s many-sided individuality - his work and diverse interests. “Hobbies” isn’t the right word. Whatever Raimundas did, he invested all of himself into it, as if seeking mastery of, even professionalism in each of his activities - hunting, cuisine, sailing.
Some photographs from Raimundas Sližys’ life may make you laugh, while other ones are able to move you to tears when you see the little Dailė against New York’s skyline - the yacht of the Lithuanian Artists Union that symbolically paved Lithua nia’s way to the West through the Iron Curtain crossed the Atlantic in 1989, lacking the needed navigation devices (not for the sake of adventure, but rather because of shortages and restrictions unknown to Western people), and Raimundas Sližys was on its deck. One of the true heroes who catalysed the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, in the USA he raised the Lithuanian tricolour, banned in the USSR. The present book, an album with reminiscences about the painter, is but a first attempt to trace the contours of Raimundas Sližys’ personality and work, all the more so because it is physically difficult to trace them: the artist’s works are scat tered around various collections not only in Lithuania, but also abroad; to photo graph them and present as comprehensive an overview of Sližys’ work as possible in this book alone demanded a lot of time and efforts. Solid academic studies of the painter’s work are yet to be written. His work undoubtedly deserves that.

Summary This book is dedicated to a distinguished painter, a true classic of Lithuanian art Raimundas Sližys (1952-2008). Already several years after Raimundas’ gradua tion from the State Art Institute of Lithuania (presently Vilnius Academy ofArt), it was clear to many that this artist’s work would end up in the treasury of Lithuanian painting. Maybe even to those who were shaking their heads sceptically at the time. This book tells its story through Raimundas Sližys’ paintings and drawings, ac companied by the reminiscences of people who knew and loved the artist. In the texts and photographs included in the book, Raimundas Sližys and those who remember him look the reader straight in the eyes, honestly and confidently. The painter was a favourite model of different artists and photographers, and often posed nude without shame. We shall accept his rules of the game: let this be a sign of true respect for Raimundas Sližys’ personality and creative work. Mural studies under the famous representative of Lithuanian monumental art professor Sofija Veiverytė - had a profound influence on Raimundas Sližys’ work and shaped his unorthodox approach to painting. He painted on canvas as if long ing for a wall and imagining the presence of the latter. A perfect wall - faultlessly primed, polished and prepared alfresco, buonfresco. The layer of paint in Raimundas’ painting was never thick. The painter also disliked the earthy colours so typical of that time’s Lithuanian painting. He favoured light local colours, especially pink- the dissident colour ofthe time. It seems that pink
was understood solely as a colour of bad taste back then it was avoided in all spheres of art. Portrait became the genre that helped Raimundas Sližys to find the points of departure of his creative work, and he often used it as an arena for experiments. This is a fairly rare phenomenon - painters are more likely to choose the still-life and landscape genres for this purpose. In portraits of both close and less familiar people, the painter boldly transformed and even caricatured their features. He was not too concerned about whether the portrayed liked and understood the result. The book matches Raimundas’ personality, being very colourful. It focuses on the painter’s many-sided individuality - his work and diverse interests. “Hobbies” isn’t the right word. Whatever Raimundas did, he invested all of himself into it, as if seeking mastery of, even professionalism in each of his activities - hunting, cuisine, sailing.
Some photographs from Raimundas Sližys’ life may make you laugh, while other ones are able to move you to tears when you see the little Dailė against New York’s skyline - the yacht of the Lithuanian Artists Union that symbolically paved Lithua nia’s way to the West through the Iron Curtain crossed the Atlantic in 1989, lacking the needed navigation devices (not for the sake of adventure, but rather because of shortages and restrictions unknown to Western people), and Raimundas Sližys was on its deck. One of the true heroes who catalysed the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, in the USA he raised the Lithuanian tricolour, banned in the USSR. The present book, an album with reminiscences about the painter, is but a first attempt to trace the contours of Raimundas Sližys’ personality and work, all the more so because it is physically difficult to trace them: the artist’s works are scat tered around various collections not only in Lithuania, but also abroad; to photo graph them and present as comprehensive an overview of Sližys’ work as possible in this book alone demanded a lot of time and efforts. Solid academic studies of the painter’s work are yet to be written. His work undoubtedly deserves that. |
