“Wliilst I always felt 1 was a part of a far larger jigsaw puzzle than I knew, these meticulously researched, thoughtfully constructed, succinctly written eight chapters took me by the hand and connected me to the s/heroines I have been longing to meet throughout my whole film-life. Ihis book is a map, and with it, I am now able to truly see and better understand the world in which 1 am situated. It has given me a path through which to locate my long-lost sisters in cinema. Wc have been scattered and separated by language, generations and colonial boundaries, and here, within the pages and chapters of this wonderful book, we are connected for the very first time.” Judy Kibinge, Kenyan filmmaker “A groundbreaking work of scholarship that should make it impossible for cinema scholars and curators, in the future, to ignore the significant contributions of African women filmmakers to global film culture. But this lucid, accessible book goes even further than that - it invites everyone to learn about and pay attention to the beautiful, diverse screen stories it honours and celebrates.” Lindiwe Dovey, Professor ofFilm and Screen Studies, SOAS, University ofLondon “In their engaging in-depth analysis of women’s filmmaking across the African continent and across the generations, BisschofFand Van de Peer’s monograph is a rich and limely contribution to the field. Adopting a textual and contextualizing approach, the authors address an impressively vast body of work through themes that are as pertinent as they are original. In the process, their work redresses the absence in both
women’s and African film studies of African women filmmakers, their voices and perspectives. Bringing to the (ore the rich complexities and plurality of these films and their aesthetics, this is an authoritative and politically necessary work.” Melissa Thackway, Lecturer in African Cinema at Sciences Po, Paris and author »/ Africa Shoots Back (2003) Women in Afincan Cinema: Beyond the Body Politic showcases the very prolific but often marginalised presence of women in African cinema, both on the screen and behind the camera. Iliis study provides the first in-depth and sustained study of women in African cinema. Films by women from different geographical regions are discussed in case studies that are framed by feminist theoretical and historical themes, and seen through an anti-colonial, philosophical, political and socio-cultural cinematic lens. A historical and theoretical introduction provides the context for thematic chapters exploring topics ranging from female identities, female friendships, women in revolutionary cinema, motherhood and daughterhood, women’s bodies, sexuality, and spirituality. Each chapter serves up a theoretical-historical discussion of the chosen theme, followed by two in-depth case studies that provide contextual and transnational readings of the films as well as outlining production, distribution and exhibition contexts. This book contributes to the feminist anti-racist revision of the canon by placing African women filmmakers squarely at the centre of African film culture. Demonstrating the depth and diversity of the feminine or female aesthetic
in African cinema, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of African cinema, media studies and African studies. Lizelle Bisschofi is a researcher and curator of African film and founder of the Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival, an annual African film festival taking place in Scotland. She is currently Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow. Stefanie Van de Peer is researcher and programmer of African and Arab cinema. Her award-winning collection Animation in the Middle East came out in 2017. She programmes for film festivals worldwide and works for Africa in Motion. She is Research Fellow at the University of Exeter and Lecturer in Film and Media at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.
