Far from the Caliph's gaze: being Ahmadi Muslim in the holy city of Qadian
How do you prove that you're Muslim? This is not a question that most believers ever have to ask themselves, and yet for members of India's Ahmadiyya Community, it poses an existential challenge. The Ahmadis are the minority of a minority—people for whom simply being Muslim is a challenge....

Zusammenfassung: | How do you prove that you're Muslim? This is not a question that most believers ever have to ask themselves, and yet for members of India's Ahmadiyya Community, it poses an existential challenge. The Ahmadis are the minority of a minority—people for whom simply being Muslim is a challenge. They must constantly ask the question: what evidence could ever be sufficient to prove that I belong to the faith? In Far from the Caliph's Gaze, Nicholas Evans explores how a need to respond to this question shapes the lives of Ahmadis in Qadian in northern Indian. Qadian was the birthplace of the Ahmadiyya Community's founder, and it remains a location of huge spiritual importance for members of the community around the world. Nonetheless, it has been physically separated from the Ahmadis' spiritual leader—the caliph—since partition, and the believers who nowadays live there and act as its guardians must daily confront the reality of this separation even while attempting to make their Muslimness verifiable.By exploring the centrality of this separation to the ethics of everyday life in Qadian, Far from the Caliph's Gaze presents a new model for the academic study of religious doubt: one that is not premised upon a concept of belief, but instead captures the richness with which people might experience problematic relationships to truth |

Evans Ithaca ; London Cornell University Press [2020] © 2020 1 Online-Ressource (xi, 225 Seiten) Illustrationen txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier How do you prove that you're Muslim? Nonetheless, it has been physically separated from the Ahmadis' spiritual leader—the caliph—since partition, and the believers who nowadays live there and act as its guardians must daily confront the reality of this separation even while attempting to make their Muslimness verifiable.By exploring the centrality of this separation to the ethics of everyday life in Qadian, Far from the Caliph's Gaze presents a new model for the academic study of religious doubt: one that is not premised upon a concept of belief, but instead captures the richness with which people might experience problematic relationships to truth Ahmadiyya, Qadian, Caliphate, Islam, Religious Bureaucracy Islamic Religion & Studies Philosophy & Religion SOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural & Social bisacsh Ahmadiyya members India Qādiān Ahmadiyya India Qādiān Ethnology India Qādiān Faith (Islam) Kalifat (DE-588)7722009-2 gnd rswk-swf Ahmadiyya (DE-588)4297505-0 gnd rswk-swf Qadian (DE-588)104313963X gnd rswk-swf Qadian (DE-588)104313963X g Ahmadiyya (DE-588)4297505-0 s Kalifat (DE-588)7722009-2 s DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-5017-1568-6 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-5017-1569-3 https://doi.org/10.7591/9781501715716 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
