SUMMARY Correspondence between Walery Goetel and Radim Kettner The book contains critical edition of correspond ence between great scholars, Walery Goetel and Radim Kettner, whose collections are deposited in the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Archive of Science of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) and the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). Personal collections deposited at the Cracow and Prague archives provided a rich source of information. The collections include letters, which are the best proof that the contacts between scholars were not limited to the professional level, but often became personal relationships or friendships. This book is the main output from the bilateral mobility project of 2016-2018 called Exchange of in spiration and knowledge in communication of Czech and Polish scientists, which focused on the phenom enon of transfer of knowledge and inspiration, as well as the cultural exchange between Czech and Polish academics in the 19th and 20th century. The project looked at the role of scientists (exchanging information and expert literature, organising con ferences, exhibitions, and internships abroad) and at the people who “inspired” the other community, contributed to the cultural exchange and transla tion of the literature and for that were awarded a membership in the academic institutions. We researched the cultural conditions and the context in which the cooperation of the scientists started, their workplaces, the Lebenswelt of the scholars, and their communication. This set of correspondence,
a critical edition of letters of the geologists Walery Goetel and Radim Kettner, was edited by Joanna Laskosz and Jan Chodějovský and prepared for print by Tomáš W. Pav líček. The book starts with the biographies of both pen pals, which allow the readers to learn about a broader context of their academic life, followed by a paper by Prof. Zbigniew Wójcik, which presents the circumstances of their cooperation and its academic and practical results. The paper then focuses on the evaluation of the edited letters and attempts to estimate how important Goetel and Kettner’s friendship was for the preservation of Tatra’s nature. DODATKY / ZAŁĄCZNIK / APPENDIX Walery Goetel (1889-1972) and Radim Kettner (1891-1967) were about the same age, belonged in their respective countries to the foremost repre sentatives of academic science and are both inter nationally recognised experts in geology. They met in 1921 in Belianske Tatras and later participated in the founding of the national parks on both sides of the border, an interesting phenomenon of the Czech and Polish cooperation. When we were looking for a suitable theme for the edition, based on sufficient sources and depicting a community outside of social sciences, they appeared to be an ideal sub ject. Radim Kettner is the founder of the modern Czech school of geology, an expert in palaeontolo gy, geomorphology, petrography, stratigraphy and structural geology. He contributed to the research and geological mapping of the Carpathians and the preservation of nature in the Tatras, while making the mountains accessible to the
public. Walery Goetel was a prominent geologist, an author of a number of books, a professor and long-time rector of the Cracow University of Mining and Metallurgy (later the Cracow University of Science and Tech nology). He is the founder of sozology, the science of nature preservation, and has contributed to the foundation of national parks on the Czech-Slovakian-Polish border. The edition itself is bilingual, which means that the letters are presented in their original languages. The introductory papers depicting the contacts of Czech and Polish geologists, the biographies of the two scientists and the chapter devoted to their friendship, were prepared in a Czech, Polish, and English version. Given the prestige of the two academics in the European science community and the matters they worked on, we believe that the book will find its readers at least in the countries of Central Europe. The critical edition might be attractive to people interested in the history of geology or environmentalists, but readers new to the subject will also appreciate the description of professional and private life of the people who formed the modern academic world. 240

SUMMARY Correspondence between Walery Goetel and Radim Kettner The book contains critical edition of correspond ence between great scholars, Walery Goetel and Radim Kettner, whose collections are deposited in the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Archive of Science of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) and the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). Personal collections deposited at the Cracow and Prague archives provided a rich source of information. The collections include letters, which are the best proof that the contacts between scholars were not limited to the professional level, but often became personal relationships or friendships. This book is the main output from the bilateral mobility project of 2016-2018 called Exchange of in spiration and knowledge in communication of Czech and Polish scientists, which focused on the phenom enon of transfer of knowledge and inspiration, as well as the cultural exchange between Czech and Polish academics in the 19th and 20th century. The project looked at the role of scientists (exchanging information and expert literature, organising con ferences, exhibitions, and internships abroad) and at the people who “inspired” the other community, contributed to the cultural exchange and transla tion of the literature and for that were awarded a membership in the academic institutions. We researched the cultural conditions and the context in which the cooperation of the scientists started, their workplaces, the Lebenswelt of the scholars, and their communication. This set of correspondence,
a critical edition of letters of the geologists Walery Goetel and Radim Kettner, was edited by Joanna Laskosz and Jan Chodějovský and prepared for print by Tomáš W. Pav líček. The book starts with the biographies of both pen pals, which allow the readers to learn about a broader context of their academic life, followed by a paper by Prof. Zbigniew Wójcik, which presents the circumstances of their cooperation and its academic and practical results. The paper then focuses on the evaluation of the edited letters and attempts to estimate how important Goetel and Kettner’s friendship was for the preservation of Tatra’s nature. DODATKY / ZAŁĄCZNIK / APPENDIX Walery Goetel (1889-1972) and Radim Kettner (1891-1967) were about the same age, belonged in their respective countries to the foremost repre sentatives of academic science and are both inter nationally recognised experts in geology. They met in 1921 in Belianske Tatras and later participated in the founding of the national parks on both sides of the border, an interesting phenomenon of the Czech and Polish cooperation. When we were looking for a suitable theme for the edition, based on sufficient sources and depicting a community outside of social sciences, they appeared to be an ideal sub ject. Radim Kettner is the founder of the modern Czech school of geology, an expert in palaeontolo gy, geomorphology, petrography, stratigraphy and structural geology. He contributed to the research and geological mapping of the Carpathians and the preservation of nature in the Tatras, while making the mountains accessible to the
public. Walery Goetel was a prominent geologist, an author of a number of books, a professor and long-time rector of the Cracow University of Mining and Metallurgy (later the Cracow University of Science and Tech nology). He is the founder of sozology, the science of nature preservation, and has contributed to the foundation of national parks on the Czech-Slovakian-Polish border. The edition itself is bilingual, which means that the letters are presented in their original languages. The introductory papers depicting the contacts of Czech and Polish geologists, the biographies of the two scientists and the chapter devoted to their friendship, were prepared in a Czech, Polish, and English version. Given the prestige of the two academics in the European science community and the matters they worked on, we believe that the book will find its readers at least in the countries of Central Europe. The critical edition might be attractive to people interested in the history of geology or environmentalists, but readers new to the subject will also appreciate the description of professional and private life of the people who formed the modern academic world. 240 |
