The extraordinary authority of the American presi dency has no parallel in the democratic world. Today, that power rests in the hands of Donald J. Trump— and rarely, if ever, has the nature of a president clashed more profoundly with that of the office. Unmaking the Presidency is the definitive account of the unprecedented confrontation between a man and the institution he has come to embody. Since the day of his inauguration, Trump has chal lenged our most cherished assumptions. We expect a president to be honest, or to give the appearance of hon esty; to make weighty decisions with care, or to seem to; and to conduct public affairs with the public good in mind. We presume the president will not use the office to enrich himself or his family, or to pardon his friends and prosecute his enemies. But where did these expectations come from? How severely have they been wounded? And can they be healed? As editors of Lawfare, described by The New York Times Magazine as a “go-to bipartisan site for remark ably speedy and informed analysis,” Susan Hennessey and Benjamin Wittes have attracted a large audience to their commentary on these questions and more. In Unmaking the Presidency, they situate Trump-era scan dals and outrages within the deeper context of history, rummaging through the annals of executive misconduct to reveal how previous presidents have abused their office and been held to account, and how Trump has invented categories of misrule all his own. What does the oath of office represent when taken by a man who may not know what it means to pre serve, protect,
and defend anything other than himself? Hennessey and Wittes conclude that the Trump era is a serious and sustained challenge to the traditional presi dency, and that the 2020 election will be a referendum on Trumps novel conception of the presidency’s power and purpose. By subjecting his administration to the clarifying light of history, this book offers a crucial and durable account of a presidency like no other.
