Summary Views of the Polish intelligentsia before political and economic changes in 1989 To all those who fought and stillfight for freedom and democracy in Poland, in particular representatives of the Polish intelligentsia, in the 30th anniversary ofsystemic changes, we devote this work Authors The book „Views of the Polish intelligentsia before systemic changes in 1989” contains the results of the study of the intelligentsia carried out before the „great change” that occurred in Poland in 1989. The wording „before systemic changes” included in the title of the book is adequate because the study was conducted in the summer (July-September) 1988 - half a year before the „Round Table”. It should be remembered about the conditions in which the survey was conducted. The end of the Polish People’s Republic was characterized by waves of workers strikes (April, May, August 1988), an increase in the ranks of the political opposition, largely recruited from the intelligentsia and „emp ty shelves”, which were the result of the deepening economic crisis in the country. An indirect influence on the views of the intelligentsia had, however, the hitherto heritage of People’s Poland, its views were also shaped in the long term perspective. Why did the authors of this work go for the results of the study from 30 years ago? The explanation is as follows: in 1988, the study was carried out on a large, representative trial of the Polish intelligentsia. The scale of this study and the value of the results required the author team a lot of time and analytical effort. As a result of political
changes in 1989, the research team did not finalize the research and for various reasons it dispersed and
284 Summary its results were forgotten. However, it turned out that in the archive of the Center for Public Opinion Research (CBOS) a copy of the questionnaire with the survey results has been preserved, which allowed for a detailed ana lysis (partial results of the study were published earlier ֊ see the book and bibliography). Was it worth to lean over the historical results of the study? Do they have any scientific value today? Well worth it! The authors found that failure to provide a detailed study of the unique results of research on Polish intelligen tsia today would be an unforgivable sin of omission. And the time and efforts devoted to the analysis of the results of the research, writing and editing the book are obvious in the work of researchers. According to the authors, the study of intelligentsia as an element of so cial structure, on such a scale and on a representative sample, is valuable and worth studying in depth. The results of the study of the Polish intelligentsia contained in the book have a lasting historical value, regardless of their contemporary assessments. In the book, we find a lot of empirical data. They enable the reader to interpret them individually, independent of the evalua tions and conclusions of the authors of the study. The specificity of this book is also its reporting character. Therefore, the text of the elaboration can be used by the reader to use the number of statistics and numerical statements. What will the reader find in this study? He will find the answer to the question: what was the Polish intelligentsia then? How was it
characterized? What was its specificity? What were her views in the basic aspects of social, political and economic fife? In the first part of the book, various interpretations of the concept of in telligentsia as a category of social structure and a brief outline of the history of the formation of the Polish intelligentsia were presented. This part also illustrates the changes that occurred in the Polish intelligentsia as a social category and the conditions in which it fiinctioned at the end of the Polish People’s Republic. The second part of the study presents the research methodology. This part of the work contains resarch assumptions and research dilemmas which were then bothering the authors of the study. This part of the study also includes the characteristics of the studied in telligentsia in the aspects relevant to the study. It contains analysis of socio -demographic and socio-professional features of the studied intelligentsia. They present the reader with a holistic image of the respondents. The third part of the book presents the views of the Polish intelligentsia at the end of the 1980s. They are included in six chapters (chapters 5 to 10). They contain a description of the consciousness and worldview of Polish intelligen tsia regarding the most important spheres of contemporary social fife.
