Bibliography Internet Resources vvs.hobbyvista.com: Modelling the Aircraft of the Soviet WS—this was a worthwhile site for making WS models. It contains some useful information, although its articles on colour are controversial and should not be taken for gospel. This site is now moribund and the forum portion is no longer functioning, but the reference articles are still up as of the time of writing (2019). www.airaces.ru: a very useful Russian language site that contains much information about Soviet aeroplanes, including production figures. www.airpages.ru: This site is not specifically about Soviet aircraft, but as a Russian site, it does contain a great deal of material about Soviet aeroplanes of the Second World War. It has both a Russian language and an English language option, but the Russian language option is more exhaustive in its coverage. Still, the English language version contains some interesting information, such as drawings, photographs, and performance figures (as does the Russian language version). www.airwar.ru: An excellent resource for aviation-related material of all eras, not just Soviet aircraft. It has much textual information on Great Patriotic War bombers and also has many plans, drawings, and photographs of these aircraft. It is in Russian, although an incomplete English version is available. Online translation is also available. www.arcforums.com: Not specifically for the WS, but contains threads and posts regarding WS aircraft and colours. www.aviapress.com: A good site for Soviet aircraft kits, accessories, and books. The prices are not
cheap, however. www.britmodeller.com: A good site for modelling in general, containing some threads and posts concerning Soviet aircraft and W S colours, some by this very author. www.hannants.co.uk: An excellent British online ordering house. They stock kits of Soviet wartime bombers and scale accessories. www.hobbyterra.com: A good site for Soviet/Russian aviation subjects; it includes some kits and scale accessories of Soviet wartime bombers. www.ilyushin.org: the Ilyushin Joint Stock Company’s official website. It contains some interesting information about the 11-4, the 11-2, and the 11-10 in its historical section. www.iremember.ru: A site that has interviews with veterans of the Great Patriotic War. The interviews are available in both Russian and English. This site is recommended not just for aviation historians, but also for anyone interested in the experiences of Soviet military men and women during the Great Patriotic War. www.lindenhillimports.com: A good internet store for all things concerning Soviet/Russian aviation, including WS subjects.
344 Soviet Bombers of the Second World War www.massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/: An excellent website for all things WS and run by the illustrator of my books on the 11-2 Shturmovik and wartime Lavochkin fighters, Massimo Tessitori. Highly recommended for all those interested in Soviet Great Patriotic War aircraft and has accurate representations of the colour schemes that they wore. This site should also be of great interest for the plastic modeller of WS aeroplanes. It includes low-resolution versions of some of the colour profiles in this book. www.modelism.airforce.ru: An excellent site that describes and reviews various aircraft models and accessories. In Russian, but with plenty of helpful photographs. www.redbanner.co.uk: The successor site to Modelling the Aircraft of the Soviet WS. The same comments about the old site generally apply to this site. www.ScaleModels.ru: A very good site for reference material on WS aircraft, including the Soviet wartime bombers and kits. In Russian with automatic English translation available (with all the interesting translation artefacts and peculiarities that entails). www.squadron.com: A very good online ordering house with a good selection of aeroplane kits, including WS subjects such as Soviet wartime bombers. They offer quick delivery in the US. www.tupolev.ru/en/aircrafts: Tupolev’s own site; it has some interesting information about the Tu-2. Further Reading Note on literature: Although I have attempted to be as comprehensive as possible regarding good literature on Soviet wartime bombers, I have no
doubt missed some worthy titles. Nevertheless, if you are able to obtain and read at least some of the following books and magazines, then you will have gained an even better understanding of the history and development of Soviet wartime bombers than can be contained in any one volume, even one as comprehensive as this book. In addition, since the Red Air Force was such an integral part of all the major Soviet battles and operations, I have also added some books that give more background on these battles, as my coverage of these actions has been somewhat cursory, this being a general reference work on the Soviet Second World War bombers and not a dedicated war history. These war histories are books that I have personally read and found to be both interesting and informative, and I hope that you will also find them to be so should you choose to read them. Please remember that these books are general military histories, not aviation histories, but for those who are interested in learning more about the battles that the Soviet bombers took part in (or even Eastern Front battles in general), these books can be recommended. Note for modellers: An important item to remember is that much of the literature mentioned further on that have bomber profiles have colour inaccuracies in their profiles. Typically, they have profiles with the fictitious colour scheme of green and brown, which should either be green and black or dark grey, green, and tan, depending on the time period (mid-1941 to mid- to late 1943 for the black and green scheme, and mid- to late 1943-1945 for the dark grey
(or black), green, and tan scheme). Sometimes they will also feature the equally spurious scheme of green and dark green, or overall green for a Great Patriotic War bomber (although some bombers did retain the pre-war overall green topside scheme for a time in the early part of the war). It is also not clear from the record when or if any bombers received the two-grey ‘fighter’ scheme, although it is possible that some Yer-2s were so finished, over a black underside. You should never rely only on profiles for your paint schemes for your models unless you have no photographs or other references. You will have to interpret whether to use the black with the green scheme, the dark grey (or black), green, and tan scheme, or the single overall topside colour schemes used post-war (and early in the Great Patriotic War), depending on the time period of your bomber, if the profiles show any of the spurious schemes mentioned previously. Beevor, A., The Fall of Berlin 1945—A thorough and balanced account of the last great battle of the Great Patriotic War. Buttar. P., Battleground Prussia: The Assault on Germany’s Eastern Front 1944—45—An excellent account of the Soviet invasion of East Prussia and the terrible retribution that the Red Army exacted on the German soldiers and civilians there.
Bibliography 345 Clark, L., The Battle of the Tanks: Kursk, 1943—A good and detailed overview of this important battle, the last major German offensive in the Soviet Union. Duffy, P. and Kandalov, A., Tupolev: The Man and His Aircraft—A book that is not specifically about the pre-war and wartime Tupolev bombers, but does contain some interesting information about these aircraft. Glantz, D. M. and House, J. M., Stalingrad—The single most comprehensive operational overview of this critical battle of the Second World War that I have read, and I have read many. Gordon, Y., Soviet Air Power in World War 2—This book contains a great deal of information about the Soviet bombers used during the Second World War, including experimental aircraft. Gordon, Y. and Khazanov, D. with Medved’, A., Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War: Volume Two—Twin-Engined Fighters, Attack Aircraft, and Bombers—This book gives a good overview of the bombers used by the Soviet Union during the Second World War. Gunston, B., Tupolev Aircraft Since 1922—This book contains some good information about the Tupolev bombers, such as the ТВ-l, TB-3, SB, and Tu-2 and its derivatives. Hardesty, V. and Grinberg, I., Red Phoenix Rising—A general history of the WS during the Great Patriotic War. Although not specifically about WS bombers, it is the best reference in English of the Wfi during the Great Patriotic War. Highly recommended if you wish to gain an overall understanding of the W S and its strategy and tactics as used during the Great Patriotic War. Hornat, J. and Migliardi, B., Colours of the
Falcons—The best reference work for WS colours in English. Recommended with reservations, as it does contain some inaccuracies, such as the spurious ‘Southern Front’ schemes. Note that this book only cover fighters, but the early black/green scheme is discussed, which was used on both fighters and bombers, such as the early versions of the Iİ-2,11-4, and Pe-2, for example. Jones, M., The Retreat: Hitler’s First Defeat—A good account of the Battle of Moscow, in what was, after Stalingrad, the most important battle of the Great Patriotic War. This is a good book about the early part of the Great Patriotic War. Jones, M. K., Stalingrad: How the Red Army Triumphed—An excellent and balanced look at what I believe to be the pivotal battle of not just the Great Patriotic War, but of the war in Europe. Khazanov, D. B., Air War Over Kursk: Turning Point in the East—Besides containing a good account of the air war, which had an important impact on the ground fighting, this book contains many good colour profiles and tables of statistics dealing with the different units and aircraft that fought on both sides. This is a good book on the air battle over Kursk. Lunde, H. O., Finland’s War of Choice: The Troubled German-Finnish Coalition in World War II—This book gives a good and balanced insight into the complex relationship between the democratic Finnish and Nazi Germany, including their sometimes joint, but more often disjointed actions against the Soviet Union. Merridale, C., Ivan’s War: Life and Death in the Red Army, 1939-1945—This book tells the story of the common soldier in the
Red Army. This book seems free of the prejudices and misconceptions, both flattering and unflattering, so common to popular accounts of the Red Army soldier. Highly recommended if you wish to know what it was like to be one small cog in the huge Soviet war machine during the Great Patriotic War. Orlov, M., Aviakollektsia: Soviet VVS Colours 1941-1945—՝Contains colour profiles, photographs, and NKAP templates. Despite being a fairly short book, to date, this is the definitive work on Great Patriotic War WS colours. It is highly recommended, though it is in Russian. Salisbury, H. E., The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad—A fascinating book on the deadliest siege of all times. Stahel, D., Kiev 1941 : Hitler’s Battle for Supremacy in the East—A book that explores an often-overlooked chapter of the war in 1941: the Battle for Kiev and how it derailed the German advance on Moscow. This book gives a fairly convincing argument that this battle was crucial in the failure of Operation Barbarossa, at least in its failure to capture the Soviet capital before the end of 1941 and possibly knock the Soviet Union out of the war. Tu-2 Flight Manual. This is the original flight manual for the Tu-2S, published in 1945. It is recommended for its drawings and historical value and is in Russian.
346 Soviet Bombers of the Second World War Wagner, R. (ed. and annotations) and Fetzer, L. (trans.), The Soviet Air Force in World War II, The Official History—Originally published in the 1970s in the Soviet Union, this book is as propagandistic as one might expect from a Soviet-era book on the Great Patriotic War. Nonetheless, if one can look past the propaganda, there is interesting and generally accurate information about the evolution of the Red Air Force during the Second World War. Recommended if you can stand a fair helping of Soviet propaganda (‘Socialist Heroes of the Motherland versus the Fascist Invaders’, etc.).
