Bloom is our greatest student of literature, “a colossus among critics” (The New York Times) and a “master entertainer” (Newsweek). Over the course of a remarkable career spanning more than half a century, in his landmark studies The Anxiety of Influence and Ճ Map of Misreading, and in such best-selling books as The Western Canon and Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, Bloom has trans formed the way we look at the masterworks of western literature. Now comes a collection that promises to do the same for American literature, revealing the surprising ways forty-seven essen tial American writers have influenced each other across more than two centuries. Assembled by David Mikics (Slow Reading in a Hurried Age), this unprecedented collection gathers five decades of writing—much of it hard to find and long unavailable—woven together into a compelling portrait of American literary genius. Always a champion of visionary power, Bloom tells the story of our national literature in terms of Emerson’s inescapable influence on all subsequent American authors and the pecu liarly American thirst for the fully awakened self. “Emerson bet the American house (as it were) on self-reliance,” Bloom writes. A mixed inheri tance, it has given us Moby-Dick and Wallace Ste vens’s “The Auroras of Autumn,” but it can also lead to extremism. “Contemporary America is too dangerous to be laughed away,” Bloom observes, “and I turn to its most powerful writers in order to see if we remain coherent enough for imaginative comprehension. ” Bloom s enthusiasm for American literature is contagious.
He reminds us how our most indis pensable writers have shaped our sense of who we are, and how they can summon us to be better versions of ourselves. As Mikics writes, Bloom “is still our most inspirational critic, still the man who can enlighten us by telling us to read as if our lives depended on it: because, he insists, they do.” arold H

Now, in the first collection devoted to his illuminating writings specifically on American literature, Bloom reflects on the surprising ways American writers have influenced each other across more than two centuries. The American Canon gathers five decades of Bloom's essays, occasional pieces, and introductions as well as excerpts from several of his books, weaving them together into an unrivalled tour of the great American bookshelf. Always a champion of aesthetic power, Bloom tells the story of our national literature in terms of artistic struggle against powerful predecessors and the American thirst for selfhood. All of the visionary American writers who have long preoccupied Bloom--Emerson and Whitman, Hawthorne and Melville, and Dickinson, Faulkner, Crane, Frost, Stevens, and Bishop--are here, along with Hemingway, James, O'Connor, Ellison, Hurston, LeGuin, Ashbery and many others. Bloom's enthusiasm for these American geniuses is contagious, and he reminds us how these writers have shaped our sense of who we are, and how they can summon us to be yet better versions of ourselves."--Amazon</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bloom, Harold</subfield><subfield code="d">1930-2019</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)119176602</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1800-2019</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">American literature / History and criticism</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">American literature / 19th century / History and criticism</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">American literature / 20th century / History and criticism</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Literaturkritik</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4036020-9</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Literatur</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4035964-5</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4078704-7</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4143413-4</subfield><subfield code="a">Aufsatzsammlung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd-content</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Bloom, Harold</subfield><subfield code="d">1930-2019</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)119176602</subfield><subfield code="D">p</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="a">Literaturkritik</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4036020-9</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4078704-7</subfield><subfield code="D">g</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="3"><subfield code="a">Literatur</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4035964-5</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1800-2019</subfield><subfield code="A">z</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Mikics, David</subfield><subfield code="d">1961-</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)129515671</subfield><subfield code="4">edt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="2"><subfield code="m">Digitalisierung UB Regensburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment</subfield><subfield code="q">application/pdf</subfield><subfield code="u">http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=031678518&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA</subfield><subfield code="3">Inhaltsverzeichnis</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="2"><subfield code="m">Digitalisierung UB Regensburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment</subfield><subfield code="q">application/pdf</subfield><subfield code="u">http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=031678518&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA</subfield><subfield code="3">Klappentext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="999" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">oai:aleph.bib-bvb.de:BVB01-031678518</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Over the course of a remarkable career spanning more than half a century, in such best-selling books as The Western Canon and Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, he transformed the way we look at the masterworks of western literature.
