Zusammenfassung: | Making Surveillance States: Transnational Histories opens up new and exciting perspectives on how systems of state surveillance developed over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Taking a transnational approach, the book challenges us to rethink the presumed novelty of contemporary surveillance practices, while developing critical analyses of the ways in which state surveillance has profoundly shaped the emergence of contemporary societies. Contributors engage with a range of surveillance practices, including medical and disease surveillance, systems of documentation and identification, and policing and security. These approaches enable us to understand how surveillance has underpinned the emergence of modern states; sustained systems of state security; enabled practices of colonial rule; perpetuated racist and gendered forms of identification and classification; regulated and policed migration; shaped the eugenically inflected medicalization of disability and sexuality; and contained dissent. While surveillance is thus bound up with complex relations of power, it is also contested. Emerging from the book is a sense of how state actors understood and legitimized their own surveillance practices, as well as how these practices have been implemented in different times and places. At the same time, contributors explore the myriad ways in which these systems of surveillance have been resisted, challenged, and subverted |

Okt 2019) Making Surveillance States: Transnational Histories opens up new and exciting perspectives on how systems of state surveillance developed over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At the same time, contributors explore the myriad ways in which these systems of surveillance have been resisted, challenged, and subverted In English Geschichte 1800-2004 gnd rswk-swf colonialism and colonial relations identification and registration medical and health surveillance migration resistance and dissent state security surveillance history the Cold War SOCIAL SCIENCE / Criminology bisacsh Intelligence service History National security Privacy, Right of History Public health surveillance History Social control Überwachung (DE-588)4134175-2 gnd rswk-swf Sicherheit und Ordnung (DE-588)4128511-6 gnd rswk-swf Informationstechnik (DE-588)4026926-7 gnd rswk-swf Staat (DE-588)4056618-3 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Kontrolle (DE-588)4055719-4 gnd rswk-swf Privatsphäre (DE-588)4123980-5 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Staat (DE-588)4056618-3 s Überwachung (DE-588)4134175-2 s Informationstechnik (DE-588)4026926-7 s Sicherheit und Ordnung (DE-588)4128511-6 s Soziale Kontrolle (DE-588)4055719-4 s Privatsphäre (DE-588)4123980-5 s Geschichte 1800-2004 z 2\p DE-604 Heynen, Robert 1969- (DE-588)1069540129 edt Van der Meulen, Emily 1977- (DE-588)1036340201 edt https://doi.org/10.3138/9781487517298 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
