Zusammenfassung: | "Vladimir Putin's image functions as a political talisman far outside of the borders of his own country. By studying material objects, fan fiction and digital media, this book traces the satirical uses of Putin's public persona, notably how he stands as a foil for other world leaders. It argues that the internet is crucial to the creation of contemporary Putin memorabilia and that these items show a continued political engagement by young people, even as some political scientists and media experts decry what they see as the opposite. The book further addresses the ways in which explicit sexual references about government officials are being used as everyday political commentary in the United States. Turning a critical eye to Putin kitsch shows how the number of such references skyrocketed during the 2016 US Presidential election campaign, and suggests that the phenomenon is likely to still be important when Americans next return to the polls. Finally, the internet makes possible a totally new kind of kitsch - the virtual kind. An examination of how the Russian president's image circulates via memes and parodies, as well as through apps and games, suggests that political culture has become increasingly participatory in the last decade."-- |

By studying material objects, fan fiction and digital media, this book traces the satirical uses of Putin's public persona, notably how he stands as a foil for other world leaders. It argues that the internet is crucial to the creation of contemporary Putin memorabilia and that these items show a continued political engagement by young people, even as some political scientists and media experts decry what they see as the opposite. The book further addresses the ways in which explicit sexual references about government officials are being used as everyday political commentary in the United States. Turning a critical eye to Putin kitsch shows how the number of such references skyrocketed during the 2016 US Presidential election campaign, and suggests that the phenomenon is likely to still be important when Americans next return to the polls. Finally, the internet makes possible a totally new kind of kitsch - the virtual kind. An examination of how the Russian president's image circulates via memes and parodies, as well as through apps and games, suggests that political culture has become increasingly participatory in the last decade."--</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovich / 1952- / Collectibles / United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovich / 1952- / In mass media</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovich / 1952- / Caricatures and cartoons</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovich / 1952- / Influence</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovič</subfield><subfield code="d">1952-</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)122188926</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Political culture / United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Kitsch / United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Internet / Political aspects / United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Kitsch</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4163976-5</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Internet</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4308416-3</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sammelobjekt</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4344018-6</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Karikatur</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4029670-2</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4078704-7</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovič</subfield><subfield code="d">1952-</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)122188926</subfield><subfield code="D">p</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4078704-7</subfield><subfield code="D">g</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Sammelobjekt</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4344018-6</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="3"><subfield code="a">Kitsch</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4163976-5</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Internet</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4308416-3</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="5"><subfield code="a">Karikatur</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4029670-2</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Erscheint auch als</subfield><subfield code="n">Online-Ausgabe, ebk</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Online version</subfield><subfield code="a">Rowley, Alison, 1971-</subfield><subfield code="t">Putin kitsch in America</subfield><subfield code="d">Montreal ;
