Zusammenfassung: | "This volume is both a formal study of the anecdote's properties and possibilities and an inquiry into the anecdote's intellectual function in Enlightenment culture. The author contends that anecdotes acted in Enlightenment writing as mediators between the incidents of human life and the laws of human nature, connecting the abstractions of philosophical reflection with lived experience. Successive chapters take a specific genre (the essay), a single writer (David Hume), a historical event (the Endeavour voyage), and a literary project (the Lyrical Ballads) as nets for collecting anecdotes. Each chapter is committed to the particularities of individual anecdotes and the specificities of the uses to which these anecdotes were put. However, the book also outlines a larger historical narrative in which the anecdote moves from a central place in the science of human nature to holding a particular place in poetry, even as the anecdote began to lose its currency in the emerging human sciences"-- |

Anecdota of Enlightenment is the first literarv history of the anecdote in English. In this wide-ranging account. James Robert Wood explores the animating effects anecdotes had on intellectual and literary cultures over the long eighteenth century. Drawing on exten sive archival research and emphasizing the anecdote as a way of thinking, he shows that an intimate relationship developed between the anecdote and the Enlighten ment concept of human nature. Anecdotes appeared in Enlightenment texts both as exceptional stories and as narratives that promised to illuminate the universal struc tures of human nature. Enlightenment writers developed new and often conten tious ideas of human nature through their efforts to interpret and explain these anom alous stories. Wood reads the periodical essays of Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, and Eliza Haywood alongside the work of John Locke and David Hume to show how anecdotes mediated between common life and philoso phy. He also examines the generative role anecdotes play in the travel narratívig of Joseph Banks and James Cook and in the poetry and poetics of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsw orth. Writ ten in an engaging style and spotlighting the eccentric aspects of Enlightenment thought, this fascinating book will appeal to histori ans. philosophers, and literary critics inter ested in the intellectual culture of the long eighteenth century
