V pekle nebeských výšin Jiří RAJLICH English Summary Officer from Hašek’s Regiment In the hell of heavenly heights Captain Ludvík Purm (1885-1953) by Jiří Rajlich This biography explores the professional as well as private life of Captain Ludwig (Ludvík) Purm - a distinguished and often decorated officer and com mander of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force during First World War. Inititally, Purm, a graduate of the Infantry Cadet School (k.u.k. InfanterieKadettenschule) in Prague, served as an officer at the same regiment as Jaroslav Hašek (the author of The Good Soldier Švejk) — K.u.k. Infanterieregiment Nr. 91. Prior to the outbreak of First World War he served gradually in its ranks at various garrisons in Bohemia (1904-1908) and Dalmatia (1908-1914). Dur ing the War, until the start of 1916, he fought in its ranks as a machine-gun detachment commander in Montenegro, Serbia and Italy where he was re peatedly decorated for bravery. In early 1916, he volunteered for service in Austro-Hungarian Air Troops {K.u.k. Luftfahtrtruppen). After graduating from the Fliegeroffizierschule in Wiener Neustadt, he fought between March and September 1916 in the ranks of newly formed 22nd Flying Company (Fliegerkompagnie 22, shortcut Flik 22) on the Russian Front as an air observer. At that time the general recon naissance unit was armed by Aviatik B.III and Albatros B.I twin-seaters. Here, during reconnaissance and bomber missions, and during the radio control of artillery fire, he collected his aviation experience as an air observer. But he wanted to become a pilot. He then volunteered
for a three-month long pilot training programme. From December 1916 to April 1917 he served as the first commander of the newly formed 14th Flying Replacement and Training Company (Fliegerersatz kompagnie 14, Flek 14) in Rajlovac near Sarajevo, Bosnia. It was not so simple to form an elementary pilot school in such a marginal corner of the Habsburg monarchy. Bosnia with its subtropical climate and high summer temperatures was only a minimally industrialized region, with poor transport infrastruc ture, low civilization levels, and the Bosnian Serb population mostly hostile to the Habsburg monarchy. Despite this, Captain Purm proved his good organi zational talent. Within a few months, even under such unfavorable conditions, he was able to form a new unit, almost pull it out of the ground, then hand it over to its successor. Subsequently, he returned to combat at the Italian Front where he again served as a commander. Between April and July 1917, he was the commander of 23rd Flying Company (Fliegerkompagnie 23) at Isonzo Front. At that time, 352

In the middle of 1917, the first pieces of new two-seat „Bergs“, namely the Aviatik C.I arrived. The ever-wider deployment of Italian Nieuport and SPAD fighters, which caused growing losses to the Austrians, forced counter-measures. That’s why Hans-Brandenburg D.I (Kampfdoppel decker) single-seater fighters have been added to protect their Flik 23 s twoseat machines. Subsequently, he returned to the rear. As an experienced airman and or ganisationally and technically capable expert he served between July 1917 and March 1918 at Fliegerarsenal in Fischamend as Wepons Department (’VHaffen-Abteilung) commander. In March 1918 he returned back to the Italian Front. Initially, he briefly commanded the famous 41st Fighter Flying Company (Fliegerkompagnie 41Jagd, Flik 41J) that fought at the Piave Front with Albatros D.IIIs, a fighters of the German design, build under the license in the Oeffag aviation factory in Wiener Neustadt. As it should have shown, he did not spend much time here. He commanded Flik 41J only during the temporary absence of Hptm. Godwin Brumowski, a most famous Austro-Hungarian fighter ace. When Brumowski returned, Purm was sent to another command post. In early May 1918, he became the commander of the reformed 9th Fighter Flying Company (Fliegerkompagnie 9-Jagd, Flik 9J) in Ospedaletto, South Tyrol. Initially, this reformed unit was armed with second-hand Albatroses D.III (Oef). Later, as a substitute for losses, Phönix
D.IIs fighters were re ceived, but also second-hand machines. Several pieces of Aviatik D.I (Berg) fragile fighters were also used by Flik 9J, but only in a small number. Nonetheless, at the time the Austro-Hungarian Air Force had been already driven into a desperate defence and suffered from a lack of high-quality airplanes and insufficient numbers of trained pilots. At the same time, the strength and quality of the enemy air forces on the Italian Front grew notice ably. Italian fighter pilots, flying a Hanriot, Nieuport and/or SPAD fighters of French design, together with the pilots of the British Empire at the Sopwith Camel fighters became masters of the airspace above Piave, Brenta and the Dolomites. It is not so surprising for such a situation, that Flik 9Junder Purm’s command therefore suffered heavy losses without achieving any noteworthy success. It is precisely this desperate period of war, from May to September 1918, when he commanded the Flik 9J, which forms an essential part of this book. This period is also best illustrated by photographs that are largely preserved by his relatives. In September 1918, with the approaching end of war, Captain Purm was appointed to a newly established position of commander of the 6th Army’s Fighter Wing (Jagdgeschwader der 6. Armee) at Piave Front. His headquar ters was in Pianzano, lying south-east of Vittorio. He was in charge of five fighter flying companies (Flik 42J, Flik 56J, Flik 68J, Flik 72J and Flik 74J) that were however so badly weakened that only few were combat-ready. 353
V pekle nebeských výšin Jiří RAJLICH Before the end of October 1918, the final offensive of the armies of the Entente in Italy was started. During this Battle of Vittorio Veneto the AustroHungarian army, exhausted, hungry, and partially demoralized, could no longer face it adequately. Also, the remains of Purm’s fighter pilots tried desperately to face enemy odds until the last days. At the time of signing the armistice in Villa Giusti, near Padua on 3 November 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Army was already on a chaotic retreat and a total decomposition. At the same time, the ancient Habsburg monarchy collapsed and disintegrated. Following the end of First World War, Captain Ludvík Purm returned to Czechoslovakia, one of the successor states of the defunct Habsburg monar chy. He wanted to fly as an air force officer, but he soon found out that nothing would be the same as before. Initially he applied to newly formed Czechoslovak Flying Corps (Letecký sbor) in Prague and subsequently he probed the possibilities of joining the Austrian Air Troops (deutsch-österreichisch Fliegertruppe). Nonetheless, he was not accepted to either of them. He remained in Czechoslovakia and retired from the active military service. In 1921 he moved to Varnsdorf, Northern Bohemia where he became an important car dealer specialising mostly in American brands. Later he beca me a sales representative of a large textile factory owned by Theodor Liebieg — a business tycoon and one of former motoring pioneers in Bohemia during the times of Habsburg monarchy. Meanwhile, he also married and founded a fam
ily. His wife became Martha Benirschka, born Schnitzer, the daughter of Mo ritz Schnitzer, a wealthy textile industrialist and a distant relative of his mother. Martha was a war widow and already had a young son. Ludvík and Martha Purm together had three more daughters. Ludwig/Ludvik Purm hailed from Northern Bohemia from a family with German, Czech and Jewish roots. He spoke fluently in both German and Czech and like many others, for long time he subjectively identified himself as a Bo hemian German. In contrast to a large part of the German-speaking popula tion in the inter-war period, he however identified with the Czechoslovak Re public, of which he was a loyal citizen who accepted its democratic principles and honoured the president Tomáš G. Masaryk. The Nazi anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws, which were - after the 1938/1939 breakup of Czechoslovakia — enforced also in the Sudetenland and in the Protek torat Böhmen und Mähren, however classified him as a half Jew (Halbjude), which put him and his family in great danger. For over six years he and his family lived in fear of being sent to a concentration and/or extermination camp. Unlike many members of his broader family who perished in the Holocaust, he was lucky enough to survive the Nazi rule. Others did not have such luck. For example, his sister Anna, living in Prague in the Protektorat, was mur dered with her two sons in Majdanek. The same cruel fate met the wife of his brother Josef and their son. The youngest brother Vilém and his son managed to emigrate to Brazil in time in 1939. 354
Svět křídel V pekle nebeských výšin After the end of Second World War, Purm’s family was excluded from the transfer of German speaking population and was allowed to stay in Czechoslo vakia. Purm himself then endorsed Czech ethnicity, his half Jewish wife Ger man ethnicity and each of their three daughters a different one: Czech, Ger man and Jewish. The circle closed. Towards the end of his life, Ludvík Purm worked as an assistant account ant in Varnsdorf where he died at the age of 68 years. 355
