Zusammenfassung: | Moscow and Greek Communism is the first comprehensive analysis of Soviet conduct in Greece during the most critical period of Greek history in this century-the last months of World War II and the years of the Greek Civil War. Peter J. Stavrakis demonstrates that Soviet policy in Greece was highly mutable and reveals how its shifts were governed by Moscow's changing aims in the Near East generally, Soviet policy toward the Western powers, and the constantly changing Greek political situation.Stavrakis draws on previously inaccessible evidence from Greek Communist archives, recently declassified materials from the U.S. National Archives, documents from British archives, and personal memoirs of former Greek partisans to create the most accurate picture available of developments in the Balkans between 1944 and 1949. He traces the course of Soviet policy, explaining why Stalin vacillated in his attitude toward the armed insurgency of the Greek Communist party (KKE), finally acting in a way that ensured its defeat. Students of Soviet foreign policy will want to consider his thesis that the lessons learned in Greece have continued to guide Soviet interventionism in regions where its capabilities for control are limited |

Stavrakis Ithaca, NY Cornell University Press [2018] © 1989 1 online resource txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher's Web site, viewed 23. Jul 2019) Moscow and Greek Communism is the first comprehensive analysis of Soviet conduct in Greece during the most critical period of Greek history in this century-the last months of World War II and the years of the Greek Civil War. Students of Soviet foreign policy will want to consider his thesis that the lessons learned in Greece have continued to guide Soviet interventionism in regions where its capabilities for control are limited In English Geschichte 1944-1949 gnd rswk-swf Europe Soviet & East European History POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Ideologies / Communism, Post-Communism & Socialism bisacsh Communism Greece Kommunismus (DE-588)4031892-8 gnd rswk-swf Griechischer Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4136643-8 gnd rswk-swf Griechenland (DE-588)4022047-3 gnd rswk-swf Sowjetunion (DE-588)4077548-3 gnd rswk-swf Griechenland (DE-588)4022047-3 g Kommunismus (DE-588)4031892-8 s Sowjetunion (DE-588)4077548-3 g Geschichte 1944-1949 z 1\p DE-604 Griechischer Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4136643-8 s 2\p DE-604 https://doi.org/10.7591/9781501732331 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
