SU M M ARY. ...... English Borrowings in Polish Corporate Language Spoken and written English has become the lingua franca for corporate communication in most countries of the developed world (Boussebaa et al. 2014). The rapid spread of the use of English is clearly an attempt to facilita te both communication and performance within the business environment all over the world. As a result, many multinational companies accept English as the common corporate language (Neeley 2012). The present lingua franca is increasingly coming into contact with national languages and their varieties. Changes in the contemporary Polish language, which result from its contact with foreign languages, are mainly influenced by English. This phenomenon is particularly noticeable in the social variety of Polish observed within the Polish corporate environment. Elements of Anglo-American provenance transferred into the ‘corporate social variety’ of Polish have not yet been explicitly classified. The wording ‘English elements’ included in the topic of the dissertation is used deliber ately, in order to highlight the significance in determining their nature, and hence the first aim of the thesis was to define their status and functions. In the course of the undertaken research, it was ascertained that they may be labeled as borrowings. The second aim was to examine the hypothesis that Poles employed in international corporations noticeably incorporate English words and phrases into their daily communication in Polish. The third aim of the study was to zoom in on ‘the Polish corporate speech’ which
was full of English borrowings. The linguistic analyses of the formation of such lex ical items were useful so as to understand the complexities of the investi gated language variety and, furthermore, they were followed by an attempt to classify this variety by placing it within the broader context of language varieties. The commonly held idea of a corporate sociolect’ was challenged due to its insufficiency in explaining the existence of differences within the branches and divisions of particular companies. The author introduced the notion of corpolect which not only encompasses the whole range of corpo rate sociolects but also provides the grounds for systematic description and classification. The fourth aim was to focus on identifying some of the most
312 Zapożyczenia angielskie w polszczyźnie korporacyjnej characteristic ‘Polish corporate anglicisms’. Moreover, the causes underlying the phenomenon of borrowing such lexical items were discussed. The thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter I is introductory and de scribes the basic concept used in the dissertation: ‘Polish corporate speech’ as a linguistic variety of the Polish language, followed by the presentation of the goals of the thesis, research methods and the analysed research material. Chapter II outlines the theoretical issues connected with contact linguis tics, understood as the interdisciplinary study of ways in which languages influence one another (Winford 2003). The term contact linguistics was only introduced in 1979, during the First World Congress on Language Contact and Conflict (Neide 1997: 287); nevertheless, language contact itself had re ceived considerable scholarly attention for several centuries. In the chapter, the history of the discipline is outlined and the notion of a lingua franca as a source language for different recipient languages is explored. In addition, the phenomenon of borrowing from the source language to the recipient lan guage is introduced as the process fuelling contact-induced changes. Chapter III presents the main positions in the debate over the sociolin güístic background of the corporate world. The chapter elucidates certain theoretical concerns connected to globalisation and corporations being part of the globalised world. Furthermore, the key part of the chapter comprises a description of the Polish corporate
community who work in a distinctive professional setting and who share both community membership and cer tain elements of linguistic communication. The discussion on the models possibly framing this complex professional group extends the scope of the issue. Having considered i.e. the concept of speech community and the con cept of community ofpractice (Lave, Wenger 1991), the latter was found to be the most accurate. Chapters IV, V and VI present three independent parts of research car ried out specifically for this project from 2012 to 2016. In the study, hetero geneous material from three different sources is taken into account in order to delineate a conceivably broad context of the investigated corporate social variation of Polish. Chapter IV concentrates on the documents acquired from Motorola Solutions company, a cooperation made possible due to the official agreement between the corporation and the Jagiellonian University in Kra ków. Altogether, eight different types of documents are scrutinized and, per haps most importantly, the personal written communication of the employees is attached, permitting an attempt to be made to mirror the Polish linguistic embodiment of the corporate common ground. In Chapter V, the research is displayed, comprising the gathered material delivered by Poles employed by various international companies in Poland. A total of 98 interviewees filled out the survey which had been specifically designed for the study. In both chapters, linguistic and statistical analyses of the sourced data are evaluated and English
Summary 313 borrowings are collected and filed therein. The graphic, morphological and semantic adaptations of the borrowings were taken into account, as well as the degrees of their assimilation within the Polish linguistic system. The fin dings included in Chapter VI are, in turn, the result of a four-year-long study pursued among Poles employed mostly by international corporations in War saw and Kraków (e.g. Philip Morris, Capgemini, Alexander Mann Solutions), with in-depth qualitative interviews recorded and analysed thereafter. First, the analysis of the phonetic adaptation of the borrowings incorporated by the interlocutors was performed. Second, in the course of the dialogues, nume rous borrowed lexical items were noted down, which confirmed the conclu sions drawn out of the aforementioned documents and surveys. In the Polish subsidiaries of international corporations, employees communicate with one another using a specific variety of language which is frequently incomprehen sible for other English-speaking Poles. What is more, the conversations helped to delineate a number of different sociolects which function in certain compa nies, as well as their internal sub-varieties (i.e. varieties used only in a branch of a corporation, or even only by members of small teams of the branch, often related to specialized vocabulary). Interestingly, the linguistic items of different corporate sociolects overlap at some points. As a result, it seems evident to as sume that most types of such sociolects do share a common ground ֊ the joint core of the corpolect, the
aforementioned umbrella term encompassing a range of corporate sociolects and systematising them. A number of conclusions are drawn in Chapter VII. The research confir med the initial hypothesis that employees of international corporations in Poland willingly incorporate English words and phrases into their daily com munication in Polish. Also, the English borrowings were collected and clas sified in the chapter. On the basis of this material, combined with additional internet sources, it was possible to compile a list of the common ‘Polish cor porate anglicisms’ (attached in Appendix 1), generally understood and used within the Polish corporate environment. The research enabled a better un derstanding of some of the mechanisms associated with borrowing English lexical items into the ‘corporate social variety’ of Polish. As mentioned above, in order to encompass this linguistic phenomenon more comprehensively, the new sociolingüístic term of corpolect was devised and deployed.
