Zusammenfassung: | Rules for the World provides an innovative perspective on the behavior of international organizations and their effects on global politics. Arguing against the conventional wisdom that these bodies are little more than instruments of states, Michael Barnett and Martha Finnemore begin with the fundamental insight that international organizations are bureaucracies that have authority to make rules and so exercise power. At the same time, Barnett and Finnemore maintain, such bureaucracies can become obsessed with their own rules, producing unresponsive, inefficient, and self-defeating outcomes. Authority thus gives international organizations autonomy and allows them to evolve and expand in ways unintended by their creators.Barnett and Finnemore reinterpret three areas of activity that have prompted extensive policy debate: the use of expertise by the IMF to expand its intrusion into national economies; the redefinition of the category "refugees" and decision to repatriate by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; and the UN Secretariat's failure to recommend an intervention during the first weeks of the Rwandan genocide. By providing theoretical foundations for treating these organizations as autonomous actors in their own right, Rules for the World contributes greatly to our understanding of global politics and global governance |

Jun 2019) Rules for the World provides an innovative perspective on the behavior of international organizations and their effects on global politics. By providing theoretical foundations for treating these organizations as autonomous actors in their own right, Rules for the World contributes greatly to our understanding of global politics and global governance In English Vereinte Nationen Friedensmission (DE-588)4437414-8 gnd rswk-swf Internationaler Währungsfonds (DE-588)1013082-2 gnd rswk-swf Vereinte Nationen (DE-588)333-5 gnd rswk-swf Vereinte Nationen Hoher Kommissar für Flüchtlinge (DE-588)43182-5 gnd rswk-swf POLITICAL SCIENCE / Intergovernmental Organizations bisacsh Internationale Politik (DE-588)4072885-7 gnd rswk-swf Internationale Organisation (DE-588)4027366-0 gnd rswk-swf Internationaler Währungsfonds (DE-588)1013082-2 b Internationale Politik (DE-588)4072885-7 s 1\p DE-604 Internationale Organisation (DE-588)4027366-0 s 2\p DE-604 Vereinte Nationen Friedensmission (DE-588)4437414-8 b 3\p DE-604 Vereinte Nationen Hoher Kommissar für Flüchtlinge (DE-588)43182-5 b 4\p DE-604 Vereinte Nationen (DE-588)333-5 b 5\p DE-604 Finnemore, Martha aut https://doi.org/10.7591/9780801465161 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
