Zusammenfassung: | In the second half of the first millennium CE, the Christian Middle East fractured irreparably into competing churches and Arabs conquered the region, setting in motion a process that would lead to its eventual conversion to Islam. Jack Tannous argues that key to understanding these dramatic religious transformations are ordinary religious believers, often called "the simple" in late antique and medieval sources. Largely agrarian and illiterate, these Christians outnumbered Muslims well into the era of the Crusades, and yet they have typically been invisible in our understanding of the Middle East's history. What did it mean for Christian communities to break apart over theological disagreements that most people could not understand? How does our view of the rise of Islam change if we take seriously the fact that Muslims remained a demographic minority for much of the Middle Ages? In addressing these and other questions, Tannous provides a sweeping reinterpretation of the religious history of the medieval Middle East. This provocative book draws on a wealth of Greek, Syriac, and Arabic sources to recast these conquered lands as largely Christian ones whose growing Muslim populations are properly understood as converting away from and in competition with the non-Muslim communities around them |

spelling | Tannous, Jack Boulos Victor 1980- Verfasser (DE-588)1029265119 aut The making of the medieval Middle East religion, society, and simple believers Jack Tannous Princeton ; Oxford Princeton University Press [2018] © 2018 1 Online-Ressource (xiv, 647 Seiten) 2 Karten txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier In the second half of the first millennium CE, the Christian Middle East fractured irreparably into competing churches and Arabs conquered the region, setting in motion a process that would lead to its eventual conversion to Islam. This provocative book draws on a wealth of Greek, Syriac, and Arabic sources to recast these conquered lands as largely Christian ones whose growing Muslim populations are properly understood as converting away from and in competition with the non-Muslim communities around them Geschichte 650-800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 450-650 gnd rswk-swf Kirchengemeinde (DE-588)4073439-0 gnd rswk-swf Eroberung (DE-588)4264420-3 gnd rswk-swf Kulturkonflikt (DE-588)4127656-5 gnd rswk-swf Fremdkultur (DE-588)4306120-5 gnd rswk-swf Ostkirche (DE-588)4044087-4 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 gnd rswk-swf Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 gnd rswk-swf Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf Naher Osten (DE-588)4068878-1 gnd rswk-swf Levante (DE-588)4196563-2 gnd rswk-swf Naher Osten (DE-588)4068878-1 g Levante (DE-588)4196563-2 g Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 s Eroberung (DE-588)4264420-3 s Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s DE-604 Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 s Kulturkonflikt (DE-588)4127656-5 s Fremdkultur (DE-588)4306120-5 s Geschichte 650-800 z Ostkirche (DE-588)4044087-4 s Kirchengemeinde (DE-588)4073439-0 s Geschichte 450-650 z Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-691-17909-4 (DE-604)BV045361946 https://www.degruyter.com/viewbooktoc/product/511581 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
