Saffron Walden, in northwest Essex, one of the most important furnished graves of Viking character found in England; the excavation records are poor but, although it is clear that most of the graves were unfurnished, a Roman grave and one later female grave and possibly a male grave were found which were accompanied by grave-goods; the cemetery seems in origin to have been Romano-British with continuity into the Anglo-Saxon period:
