Although a definitive lexical study of the words oikoumene and oikoumenikos has not yet been written, it is possible to distinguish, from antiquity to the present, at least seven meanings in them: (I) pertaining to, or representing, the whole of (inhabited) earth; (2) pertaining to, or representing, the whole of the (Roman) empire; (3) pertaining to, or representing, the whole of the Church; (4) that which has universal or ecclesiastical validity; (5) pertaining to the worldwide missionary outreach of the Church; (6) pertaining to the relations between and unity of two or more Churches (or of Christians of various confessions); (7) that quality or attitude which expresses the consciousness of and desire for Christian unity.
