Frend, W. H. C. (2000). Copts. The term "C." was first used to identify the native Egyptians (as opposed to the Macedonian-descended Alexandrians) possibly as early as the Ptolemaic period, but from the 4th century AD it was applied predominantly to Egyptian Christians.
