THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM CONFERENCE PERSONALITIES
FROM PETER THE GREA TS TIME (1998-2018)
The annual conference Personalities from Peter the Great’s Time has been held in the Menshikov Palace
since 1998. The conference proceedings are published every year; they would comprise summaries
of the papers in 1998—2005, and since 2016 they contain article collections published as the Transactions
of the State Hermitage Museum.
Russian researchers from museums and academic institutions of St Petersburg, Moscow, Saratov,
Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk and other Russian cities, as well as foreign specialists take part in these
conferences.

THE AGE OF ELIZABETH OF RUSSIA AND OUTCOMES OF PETER THE GREAT’S
UNDERTAKINGS IN ORPHAN CARE
The article covers facts related to the accession of Peter the Great’s daughter Elizabeth Petrovna
to the throne and focuses on circumstances complicating her road to it. Elizabeth’s reign is analysed
through the measures the Government took with relation to special institutions for orphans and il-
legitimate children. Peter the Great’s undertakings in this field are compared to their outcomes in the
age of Elizabeth of Russia. The paper comes to conclusion that there was no commitment to changes
or strategic decisions, Peter the Great’s reforms were neglected, and the policy established during the rul-
ing of Anna of Russia was maintained, which confirmed declarative nature of the empress’s intentions
to follow Peter the Great’ precepts in orphan care.

RUSSIAN FOOTBALL AND SPORTS TRADITIONS AT THE FIRST CADET CORPS
Since the founding of the Cadet Corps and its placement on the territory of the former residence
of Prince Alexander Menshikov, Russian emperors and heads of this military educational institution had
been taking care of its students’ sports education.
The sports interests characteristic of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries influenced the forma-
tion of the ensemble and the use of its territories. There was a riding arena, a ballroom and a parade
ground for military exercises and sports.
In 1897 on the parade ground the first Russian football match was held between the Russian and
British teams.

SUMMARIES
At the beginning of the twentieth century the authorities in charge of military educational institu-
tions obliged the officer-educators of the cadet corps to take a course preparing them for teaching
games and sports disciplines: gymnastics, fencing, swimming.
Alexander Krutetsky, an officer-educator of the corps and the head of the Menshikov Palace muse-
ums, shared information about the football match that took place in 1925 between Russian and Italian
sailors on the pages of his diary.

SIDENOTES DESCRIBING SCULPTOR RASTRELLFS LIFE AND ARTWORK
The article discusses and describes in detail Bartolomeo Rastrelli’s (1667—1744) date of birth and
name assumed in Konstantin Malinovsky’s book Bartolomeo and Francesco Tuistrelli. Due to vague reasons
some of the sculptor’s works are not mentioned in the book. Finally, the paper critically analyses three
statues currently attributed to the artist without sufficient evidence.

permanent secretary Alexey Makarov, published for the first time, adds to our knowledge of relations
between the royal family’s confidants. It also expresses somewhat negative perception of Astrakhan,
later established in public opinion, which Artemy Volynsky, as the most popular Astrakhan Governor,
seems to have contributed to.

‘SEND THESE DEEDS WITH AN EMINENCE.’:
AVRAAM LOPUKHIN’S JOURNEY TO ISTANBUL IN 1712
Room stolnik Avraam Fyodorovich Lopukhin (d. 1718) is perceived by Russian historiography as op-
ponent of Peter I’s reforms and advocate of old traditions who was in contact with Peter I’s disgraced
sister Tsarina Eudoxia, as well as with Tsarevich Alexey Petrovich and his associates, and as person far
from political life. In May 1712 the tsar ordered Avraam Lopukhin to deliver a ratification deed for
the Treaty of Constantinople to the Ottoman capital, as well as to bring letters of credence to Pyotr
Shafirov and Mikhail Sheremetev. However, the favorable chance for granting the ratification to sultan
was wasted due to delays in preparing presents. On 31 October 1712 the Ottoman Empire declared
war on Russia. Avraam Lopukhin and other Russian ambassadors were detained and spent almost half
a year in the Yedikule Fortress in Turkey. When the Treaty of Adrianople was signed (on 13 June 1713),
Avraam Lopukhin was sent to Lvov to gather evidence from senators for Russian troops’ withdrawal
from Poland. This was an important condition of the peace treaty. Avraam Lopukhin managed to get
signed and stamped ‘certificates’ granted by supporters and adversaries of August II, the king of Poland.
The peace treaty was ratified. Study of Avraam Lopukhin’s crucial diplomatic mission in Istanbul chal-
lenges traditional approach to the interpretation of his historical role.

AND PAUL FORTRESS
According to The Manuscript on Founding and Planning of the Royal City of St Petersburg deposited in the
Hermitage collection of the Manuscripts Department in the National library of Russia, Peter I chose
the place for the gate (between the Sovereign and Menshikov bastions) himself and made its prototype
by shaping top branches of birches into an arch during the city foundation ceremony on 16 May 1703.
This symbolic shape was the key to understanding both the first (1707—1708) and the second (1716-
1718) gate designs which involved variations in sculptural decoration, while keeping intact the concep-
tual attic design depicting The Apostles Paul and Peter Confront Simon Magus.
This article is aimed at:
— confirming to the possible extent the ‘literary’ nature of the manuscript and doubtless significance
of the facts it states;
- attempting to interpret the symbolic design of Peter’s Gate in the SS Peter and Paul Fortress from
historic viewpoint.

THE HOUSE OF ROMANOV’S ENGAGEMENT AND WEDDING CEREMONIES
IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
The article attempts to distinguish possible avenues of research within the global topic devoted to the
House of Romanov’s engagement and wedding ceremonies in the first half of the eighteenth century. Five
weddings (those of Tsarina .Anna Ioannovna (1710), Emperor Peter I (1712), Tsesarevna .Anna Petrovna
(1725), Princess Anna Leopoldovna (1739), Grand Duke Peter Fyodorovich (1745)) and two engagements
of Peter II (in 1727 and 1729)) are the object of research. The article analyses an engagement ceremony
involving exchange of rings and presenting the groom’s portrait. This ceremony got a strong religious
nature in the middle of the century, while in the beginning of the century it had been a symbolic exchange
of rings (commonly performed by the monarch personally). The author tries to distinguish such aspects
of research as solemn procession from a palace to a church and back (by water or by land), selection
of a church for the wedding ceremony, decoration of a room for celebration (in particular, symbolic deco-
ration of newlyweds’ seats with laurel wreathes and crowns), wedding ceremony ‘participants’, brides and
groom’s dresses, balls and masquerades (wedding ‘quadrille’), arrangement of fireworks and illuminations.
The Baroque culture of popular laughter incorporated dwarf weddings arranged at royal courts in the first
half of the eighteenth century. The way they were held matched the monarchs’ official weddings.
Therefore, study of the royal family’s wedding ceremonies in the first half of the eighteenth century
open up a variety of avenues for deep research. The paper outlines the ceremonies’ evolution from
small-scale feasts involving some of old Russian and Western European traditions to large-scale celebra-
tions based on new vigorous culture of royal courts.

BACK TO THE EPITAPH TO LEFORT: OUTCOMES OF DISCUSSIONS
AND COOPERATION
This paper was inspired by discussions devoted to Franz Lefort’s burial, the epitaph to him and asso-
ciated texts, which had taken place in publications and at the 'Personalities from Peter the Great's Time confer-
ences from 2013 to 2017. The discussions were mainly focused on Dmitri Gouzevitch’s book published
in 2013, articles of Alexander Avdeev and Dmitry Valkov issued in 2016 and reports made by Dmitri
Gouzevitch, Irina Gouzevitch and Natalia Bolotina in 2017. The idea regarding the most probable author
of the epitaph in Latin (these proceedings contain Igor Yurkin’s article specifically covering the issue)
was voiced during debates which followed the report made at the Personalities from Peter the Great's Time
in 2017. Two articles published in the Personalitiesfrom Peter the Great's Time — 2017 directly or indirectly re-
ferred to this topic. The first one was Anatoly Dutov’s Some Issues of Prince Alexander Danilovich Menshikov's
Iconography that uses the name J. H. von Luth referring to Johann Heinnch Lochenstein, Peter I’s first
biographer during the emperor’s lifetime and the first publisher of the epitaph in Latin. The second
article was Tatiana Bazarova’s Adventures of Hanoverians in Russia focusing on Friedrich Christian Weber,
the publisher of the same epitaph’s text, and discussing the number and scope of his visits to Moscow.
According to the analysis, Von Luth’ surname is a fake, and detailed data on Weber’s visit to Moscow
confirm the conclusion that he had not seen the tombstone.
Boris Megorsky attempted to identify a Livonian major, Lochenstein’s informer, and managed
to limit the options to two persons, while Natalia Bolotina searched for a note made by a student whom
Johannes Rost asked to copy the epitaph in 1762.
The joint report contains the research’s outcomes.

THE REASON ELIZABETH PETROVNA NEEDED A PLAN
OF ST PETERSBURG
The famous Plan of the Capital City of St Petersburg dated 1753 is considered an ‘anniversary’ one, and
it is believed to be a masterpiece of Russian cartography from the age of Elizabeth I. However, there
was no intention to mark the city’s fiftieth anniversary. The idea of the new Russian capital’s official plan
arose during the diplomatic war related to the Treaty of Aachen conditions, and it became one of the
tools Russia used in the ‘information war’ to ensure its equal participation in European policy. The plan’s
task was gained.
The article adduces reasons to support this assumption using both the facts of the War of the
Austrian Succession, including diplomatic correspondence and the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle chro-
nology, and documents deposited in the archive of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences that made
the plan. Elizabeth Petrovna is discussed as the plan initiator.

THE KANXI EMPEROR OF CHINA AS PETER FS CONTEMPORARY
World history faces a lot of paradoxes, and one of them is rather outstanding. It refers to historical
destinies of two dynasties, the Russian Romanov dynasty and the Chinese Qin dynasty. Both of them
came to power in the first half of the seventeenth century, both played a significant historical role
in their countries, and their historical missions ceased almost simultaneously in the early twentieth cen-
tury causing the abolition of monarchy in both countries. Everybody knows about Peter Fs role in the
Russian Empire’s establishment. However, the Kanxi Emperor also played an important part in the de-
velopment of the Chinese nation. He is believed to have laid a foundation for prosperity of the empire
that became a world power, political and cultural centre of the huge Far East by the mid-eighteenth
century. Regardless some contradiction with the rules of traditional political culture (Imperial China be-
lieved that foreign rulers could not be equal to the Son of Heaven), Qin royal historians compared him
with Peter I when evaluating his contribution to the empire’s prosperity. It was the only case of its kind.
Chinese historiography still assimilates these two great emperors who ruled in the late seventeenth —
early eighteenth century.

The article offers a new attribution of the renowned Peter I on His Deathbed by Ivan Nikitin depos-
ited in the State Russian Museum collection. The author believes that Ivan Nikitin depicted sleeping
Peter, as the records prove that a painting portraying sleeping Peter I from an uncommon aspect existed
in the eighteenth century and differed from other artworks associated with his death. The first part
of the research describes in detail all the extant portraits of Peter I on his deathbed, including that
by Johann Gottfried Tannauer.

Empress Elizabeth of Russia traveled to Esthonia in the very beginning of her reign (1746). Except
for political goals, her journey had informative nature: Elizabeth was going to see again her father’s
(Peter I) acquisitions in the West, and, in particular, Revel, where she had been spending much time with
her parents in Katharinental. Elizabeth’s retinue included future heirs to the throne, particularly, Grand
Duke Peter Fyodorovich (Peter III) and Grand Duchess Catherine (Catherine II). The Russian suite was
escorted in Esthonia by the German scientist Jetze Franz Christoph whose diary reveals details of that
interesting journey. The report is also based on Notes by Catherine II, as well as reports of Western
envoys at the Russian Court.

NEW DATA ON AN UNDERSTUDIED PRINT TRIUMPHAL PICTURE DEVOTED
TO THE CONQUEST OF AZOV BY JAKOB NACHTGLASS
Jacob Nachtglass’s print illustrates Gloria Triumpharum et Trophaearum. .of the Great Emperor. Peter I,
Amsterdam, 1700. The book was written and published by Ilias Kopievsky and described Russian vic-
tory over the Turks and the conquest of the Azov Fortress in Turkey by the Russian Emperor Peter I
in 1696. When the first attempt to study the print was made, there were almost no data regarding
persons marked on the print’s side. They were I. Gurey, identified as the author, and Jacob Nachtglass
marked as engraver. The latter was briefly mentioned in academic publications as Adriaan Schoonebeek’s
apprentice. This Dutch engraver held a contract in Russia from 1698 to 1705 and founded his own
Moscow Art School of Engraving. Adriaan Schoonebeek is also renowned for his prints devoted to the
conquest of Azov in 1696.
The text placed by Jacob Nachtglass in his artwork next to the image is studied well, while the print’s
iconography is studied less. The paper compares Adriaan Schoonebeek’s print featuring fireworks held
to celebrate the conquest of Azov and a drawing depicting the album containing sketches for the Dutch
artist’s prints. Thus, the study assumes that Adriaan Schoonebeek created and inspired the image at the
very initial stage, and it was later used by Jakob Nachtglass for his print.

OF THE SWEDISH ARMYS MILITARY LOGISTICS IN 1702-1705
Russian and foreign historiography knows Field Marshall Count Magnus Stenbock as an outstand-
ing military commander who served in the army of Swedish King Charles XII. When discussing
the Great Northern War (1700—1721), historians commonly use biographical essays devoted to his
service and military career. Alongside with his successful military career, the general also had a position
of Generalknegskommissar in the Swedish army between 1702 and 1705, when Swedish troops were
deployed in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This paper refers to foreign historiography and
discusses some situations linked to Generalknegskommissar Magnus Stenbock’s activity, as well as cov-
ers peculiarities of the Swedish army functioning within such a large-scale military conflict as the Great
Northern War.

The article covers the biography of Gustavus Goll, a diamond jeweller and a goldsmith born

describes his biography as well as his professional activity both within the company and as individual
artist. He had been the Armoury craftsman for twenty-five years, and then, in 1691, he began to make
his living as a private craftsman fulfilling the 'tsars’ orders. Gustavus Goll had known Franz Lefort since
his arrival to Russia, and the paper is the first to cover their relations. It also discusses Gustavus Golfs
family, relatives and mates based on published and newly discovered archival data.

Today the longstanding restoration of the Summer Palace is about to finish. The restoration carried
out by architect Alexander Gessen in 1960 had brought the building much of its original view. Architect
Nikolay Ivanov developed the present project based on the same concept of maximal preservation
of the original building, but unfortunately, it has not been fully implemented. The Committee for
State Inspection and Protection of Historic and Cultural Monuments states that Profile, LLC, which
performed the façades restoration did not meet all the design requirements. We can only hope that
the Committee will insist on elimination of non-conformities.

AND HER ENTOURAGE
Notes by Chevalier d’Éon, made between 1757 and 1762, form a 'gallery’ of Elizabeth Petrovna’s
and her entourage’s verbal portraits, which add some flamboyant peculiarities to the traditional de-
scriptions of Russian dignitaries in their contemporaries’ memoirs at the age of Elizabeth I. The notes
of the French diplomat have a specific nature due to their bragging and exaggeration of the author’s
closeness to St Petersburg dignitaries and their fictional nature specifically traceable in the unpub-
lished Secret Anecdotes about the Court of the Russian Empress. Chevalier d’Eon developed traditions of the
eighteenth-century French Rossica significantly influenced by stereotypes about the distant northern
country. However, the description of the westernised Russian elite of the eighteenth century was
beyond the 'Russian barbarism’ stereotype. The concept of France’s cultural superiority contained

in the diplomat’s notes is the only reference to it. The notes have another feature common for the
French Rossica. That is the description of arbitrary rule and slavery of all subjects, irrespective of their
origin. Nevertheless, he notes the Russian nobility’s will for freedom and their desire to limit the abso-

THE FIRST ORANIENBAUM PRIEST NIKON PAKHOMIEV
The article attempts to restore the biography of Nikon Pakhomiev, the first Oramenbaum priest.
The author uses archival documents to describe this rural priest from Vereisky Uyezd who eventually
came to St Petersburg. His life was linked to Prince Alexander Menshikov’s affairs between 1715 and
1727. Nikon Pakhomiev was a priest in Oranienbaum for about ten years. Later, he was the confessor
for Count Pyotr Sheremetev’s house in Moscow. He returned to St Petersburg in 1733 and became priest
at the Annunciation Church located on Count Gavrila Golovkin’s estate in Ropsha. The author states
that Nikon Pakhomiev’s life reflected the nature of the modern age as it differed from the way his father
and grandfather had lived.

the French Consul in St Petersburg between 1717 and 1724. Discovered in the Russian State Archive
of Ancient Acts, these documents, that form the basis of the present article, provide an opportunity
to reveal a number of new circumstances related to the stay of Lavie in Russia. For example, it con-
cerns the place of his residence in the mentioned period, the place where ships with French goods
were moored and the difficulties encountered by French merchants in trade with Russia, as well as par-
ticipation of Lavie in the Adriatic spotlight’ of Baron de Saint-Hilaire and the nature of Lavie’s debts.
The documents also describe some of the realities of the early eighteenth century, concerning both
Russia and France. They serve, to some extent, as a characteristic of the era, people, activities of the au-
thorities, for example, ‘Mr. Theodore’ (Fyodor Bolotny), Alexander Menshikov, Jacques de Campredon,
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Senate.

Great changes made by Peter I introduced new European features in architecture and interior de-
sign in the first quarter of the eighteenth century, as well as in various cultural spheres and in daily life.
New shapes in interior design needed new items of different forms and applications. Royal palaces
and residences, as well as houses of nobility, were decorated with paintings, sculptures, various curi-
osities, including outstanding Western European artworks. Some scholarly publications have covered
the purchasing and further delivery to Russia of various goods for house construction, finishing and
decoration. This paper mainly analyses narrative sources (the tsar’s correspondence with officials and
individuals, as well as correspondence between officials) and other documents from the age of Peter
the Great (list of purchased goods, records in treasury ledger books) and, thus, provides for additional

The article discusses artistic decorations installed for celebrations arranged by Russian repre-
sentatives abroad and devoted to the Treaty of Nystad. Files deposited in the Russian State Archive
of Ancient Acts provide for a comprehensive understanding of the celebrations’ arrangement and or-
ganisation. Archival documents show that illuminated triumphal arches were erected at Russian courts
in The Hague, Copenhagen and Constantinople specifically for those celebrations. The Hague and
Copenhagen arches were equipped with wine fountains shaped as eagles outlining the Russian Empire
coat of arms. A special hall for celebration, a stage for a 'firework theatre’ and an enormous 'whopper’
serving food for common people were built in Paris. There were fireworks and illuminations during
almost all the festivities. The culmination of firework performances in Berlin and Amsterdam, as well
as in Moscow and St Petersburg, was closure of the Gates of the Temple of Janus. The records depos-
ited in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts widen our knowledge of the festive culture at the age
of Peter the Great, as well as help discover a range of issues for further study. The article is published
with an appendix containing abstracts from the archival documents.

THE ALLEGORY OF GLORY STATUE FROM THE SUMMER GARDEN.
THE HISTORY OF RESTORATION OF PETER I’S COLLECTION
The article addresses The Allegory of Glory by Pietro Baratta, a Venetian sculptor of the early eigh-
teenth century, to discuss issues related to storage, restoration and copying of the Summer Garden
statues. The three hundred years the artwork had spent outside were considered during the analysis
of its history. The environment had affected its marble and caused its poor preservation and the need
to replace the original artwork with a copy. Today the restored original marble sculpture is permanently
deposited in the Mikhailovsky Castle, branch of the State Russian Museum.

DEPICTION OF A SHIP WITH ST PETERSBURG OF 1716 IN THE BACKGROUND
This study analyses the Russian sailing fleet depicted on Alexey Zubov’s print Panoramic 'View
of St Petersburg. 1716. The paper addresses this issue, as Russian art history commonly focuses on the
city’s architecture, while the major part of the print depicts various types of vessels.
The author discusses the type of the ship portrayed in the print, scenes depicted in its stern decora-
tions, as well as reasons why the print’s copies were issued only once during Peter Is lifetime, and would
have never been sent abroad.
Research methodology studies and systematises theoretical data and artworks, analyses boat models
and prints deposited in the Central Naval Museum collection, and covers drawings found in the Russian
State Naval Archive.
The comprehensive understanding of St Petersburg as portrayed in Alexey Zubov’s print extends
our knowledge of ships at the age of Peter the Great.

TSAREVNA CATHERINE IVANOVNA,
THE ‘EMPEROR’S PRINCESS’. ON HER PORTRAIT’S PARADOX
The article studies a rare artefact from the age of Peter the Great. It is the portrait of Tsarevna
Catherine Ivanovna, the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, deposited in the Moscow Kremlin
Museums. The portrait involves a range of issues including the model’s identification, determination of
the portrait’s customer, masquerade phenomena in Catherine Ivanovna’s wedding ceremony that influ-
enced her official portrayal, as well as German society’s attitude to the wedding. The portrait concept
is considered Peter I’s ideological tool to represent the state during the establishment of the Russian
Empire and reviewed taking into account the political situation of the Northern War, which is the key
to understanding the portrait iconography and to assuming its attribution and the date it was painted.

BENGT GABRIELSSON OXEN STIERNA’S POLITICAL WILL AS AN ALTERNATIVE
DEVELOPMENT OF RUSSIAN-SWEDISH RELATIONS IN THE FIRST QUARTER
OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
A letter written by Count Bengt Gabrielsson Oxenstierna, a prominent Swedish politician of the
seventeenth century, was found in the Russian-Swedish Relations Fund of the Russian State Archive
of Ancient Acts. His activity in the 1680s resulted in change of Swedish foreign policy established

by King Gustav Adolf and Cardinal Richelieu and based on the union with France. Such maritime pow-
ers like England and Holland became its allies. This was combined with Charles XTs reforms and the
count’s generally peaceful policy and made Sweden a great power.
Count Oxenstiema’s letter was written on 2 March 1702, four months before his death. It is a kind
of political will, where the wise and experienced politician attempts to refrain young and reckless king
Charles XII from inconsiderate actions which may cause large losses. He thoroughly describes all
possible options of military and political events of the Great Northern War, analyses the adversaries’
opportunities, offers various tactics to combat the enemy. The war outcome could have been different
if the young king had given credence to Count Oxenstiema’s pieces of advice, thus, this could have
provided a significant influence on the histories of all participating countries.

PETER I, THE BUTENANTS AND THE LATIN EPITAPH
TO FRANZ LEFORT
The article discusses a possible author of the Latin epitaph to Peter the Great’s associate Franz
Lefort who deceased in 1699. Johann Heinrich Lochenstein’s book (1710) limits the search to the
ambassador plenipotentiary’s family members. When Lefort died, such diplomatic rank did not ex-
ist in Russia, thus, the paper attempts to discover duties, as well as people with similar authority who
could have been called in this way. It is assumed and substantiated that Andrey Ivanovich (Heinrich)
Butenant von Rosenbusch, the Danish king’s commissary, was the Danish ambassador plenipotentiary.
His relationship of trust with Peter I are analysed. The article speculates on possible Andrey Butenant’s
participation in Franz Lefort’s funerals. His relatives were identified (they are named and characterised
in part): the son, the stepson and nephews. The most possible author of the epitaph in Latin is stat-
ed to be his son Heinrich (Andrey Andreevich in Russia) Butenant. The paper describes Alexander
Danilovich Menshikov’s role in the future of the Olonets ironworks built and owned by the Butenants.

PETER FS REIGN IN RUSSIAN CHRONICLES
The article addresses two unpublished and understudied chronicles of the early eighteenth century
(Novgorod Pogodinskaya Chronicle and Fyodor Petrov’s Special Content ‘Chronograph’) to study the
way events of Peter the Great’s reign were described in the later chronicle tradition in Russia. The paper
discusses different styles of outlining both private events and significant historical ones. Such chronicles
are eighteenth-century artefacts, on the one hand, but they feature the late stage of the Russian chroni-
cle tradition, on the other. They also link this tradition, several centuries long, to modern age historiog-
raphy, thus, further research is needed.
