The concept of Surma, as one of the two normative fountainheads of the Islamic
tradition, is of fundamental importance to the understanding of nearly all
branches of Islamic knowledge including law and politics. This volume equips
readers with a comprehensive overview of the nature and the scope of the concept
of Surma in both premodern and modern Islamic contexts and discussions. The
contributors examine how Surma was understood and possibly evolved during
the formative (the first three centuries Hijri) and classical periods (ending at the
beginning of sixth century Hijri) of Islamic religious thought. The book focuses on
shedding more light on the context in which the term “Sunna” was employed in
the major works of Islamic law and legal theory during the first six centuries Hijri
across all the major madhahib. The Sunna and its Status in Islamic Law delves into
and deconstructs the conceptual, epistemological, and hermeneutical relationship
between the concepts of Sunna and the concept of sound (sahih) hadith as
understood in various Sunni madhahib as well as in early Islamic history and
theology.
Adis Duderija is Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Malaya, Malaysia. His
research interests include contemporary Islamic hermeneutics, Islam and gender,
contemporary Muslim reformist thought, and the role of religion in Western
Muslims identity construction. He is the author of Constructing a Religiously Ideal
Believer and Woman in Islam: Neo-traditional Salafi and Progressive Muslims
Methods of Interpretation. He is the editor of Maqasid al-Shari a and Contemporary
Reformist Muslim Thought: An Examination.
