The Townhouse
The book “The Townhouse” depicts the history of interwar Lublin by
describing the story of a townhouse at 6 Wieniawska Street built by
a housing cooperative established by well-known Jewish residents of the
city. The worsening economic situation of the cooperative meant that
the townhouse became increasingly inhabited not only by Jews but also
by people of means from different denominations: Roman Catholic, Lu-
theran, and Orthodox. This specific conglomeration of residents coop-
erated rather well both as part of the cooperative but also in everyday
life. The residents represented different professions and held important
positions in the city and country. Many have left their mark on the his-
tory of Lublin, Poland, and the world, i.a. by influencing the course of
World War II.
Wanda Rolska, who lived in the townhouse for almost her entire life,
recounts the stories of her family and neighbours. Other complex sto-
ries of the residents are connected to the occupation period when first
Jewish neighbours were ousted from the townhouse and later other res-
idents were moved to different houses to free space for German officials.
In this part, the book recounts the lives of the residents during and after
the war.
“The Battle of Lublin” of July 1944 tells the story of events related to
the liberation of the city. After the war new residents moved into the
townhouse - those fleeing from the East, the destroyed Warsaw, but also

representatives from the repression service of the new communist gov-
ernment, the Office of Security.
During the revival of Lublin, the first Drama School in after-war Po-
land was established in the apartment of Eleonora Frenkiel-Ossowska,
an actress widely known already before the war broke out. The school
educated many well-known Polish actors including Wieslaw Mich-
nikowski, Mieczyslaw Czechowicz, and Wojciech Siemion. In the 60s
and 70s, the townhouse residents included many academics from Lub-
lin universities i.a. the Venerable Franciszek Blachnicki.
The townhouse at Wieniawska 6 for nearly 90 years witnessed the
intertwining stories of different people from various periods of Lublin’s
and Poland’s history.
