SUMMARY
Fedenko O.O. The Italian Community of Odessa at the Late 18th and
Early 20th Centuries. Monograph.
The topicality of this theme stems from an insufficient coverage and a
need for careful thought and interpretation of the role of the Italian community
of Odessa in social-economic development of Dnieper Ukraine as one of the
most important episodes of the national and regional history, as well as for
devising the strategies of the national and economic policies.
The scientific novelty of the results obtained is accounted for by the
content and the whole of the tasks set and the ways of their solution. The author
offers a new framework approach to the study of the problem by means of
segregation of the social-economic activities carried on by the Italians of
Odessa from the background of economic development of Dnieper Ukraine. A
voluminous body of archival materials from the repositories of the Ukrainian
and Italian archives has been introduced into scientific discourse, which allows
backcasting an entire view of the economic activity of members of the Italian
community in Odessa in the late 18th and the early 20th centuries. There have
been singled out stages of formation of the Italian community in Odessa, the
dynamics of its numerosity, the linguistic appurtenance, state and occupations
of its members being described. The effect of the Italian merchants’ activity
upon the development of commerce in Dnieper Ukraine has been expressly
isolated. The thesis elucidates participation of the Italian emigrators in
formation of the food industry and in the marble carving craft in Dnieper
Ukraine. The role of consuls general in organisation of the Italian emigrators’
life and economic activity is also placed under close scrutiny. The author
establishes the origin, relationship, and generations of the Italian merchants and
industrialists (the Anatra, Porro, de Azarta, Sondans, Cavasso, Pozzo, and the
Cotroneo families). The public and charitable activity of the Italian negotiants
and the other members of the Italian community of Odessa has been brought
into sharp focus.
The scientific and practical importance of the work lies in the theoretical
generalisations and conclusions made in the thesis on the basis of newly
discovered archival records that have helped to elucidate holistically the
problems of the role of the Italian community of Odessa in economic life of
Dnieper Ukraine in the late 18th and the early 20th centuries. The scholarly
generalisations and ideas proposed can be used for any further scientific
research in history of the Italian expatriate community and consular offices,
study of economic processes within Dnieper Ukraine and in implementation of

any national governmental programs in Odessa region and performance of all
bilateral international treaties for cooperation between Ukraine and Italy.
The representativeness of the sources of this study for a PhD degree that
include a wide scope of documentary sources by contents and type (legislative,
interdepartmental documents, deeds and records, statistical materials, foreign
and national printed media of the day, sources of special origin) allows
considering the theme of the study at length.
The author singles out the stages of formation of the Italian community of
Odessa and the factors that influenced the same, viz.: 1) Timeliness from the
end of the 18th century till the first decade of the 19th century is a period when
there appear the first Italian emigrators in Odessa whose majority consisted of
servicemen who were in active military service in the Russian Empire. The
community numbered in that period up to 1,000 persons; 2) Timeliness from
the second decade of the 19th century till the first half of the 1870s, which is
marked by an increase in number of members of the community of up to 3,000
persons, and, first of all, representatives of the trades related to commerce and
carrying trade; in the city there appear consular representative offices of all the
Italian states. 3) Timeliness from the 1870s till the early 20th century is a period
when the number of the Italians were constantly reduced in the city.
A number of occupations spread among the Italian emigrators has been
analyzed, being attributed both to the trades traditionally typical of the Italians
and to the needs of the young thriving city. The Italians were engaged mainly in
manufacture, commerce, and carrying trade. Due to their accomplishment and a
quick learning of Russian, a considerable number of the Italians were admitted
to the Public Service becoming officers of the local public authorities and
judicial bodies, and to the educational institutions and medical centres.
It has been proven that the consuls were genuine leaders of the Italian
community; they were appointed by the Governments of the Italian states for
service in Odessa, and their functions furthered the Italian emigrators ’ welfare
and economic activity. The role of the Italian consuls general in the process of
becoming, lobbying and protection of the commercial interests of their own
states in Odessa consular circumscription remains one of the main focuses in
this thesis; the said role involved opening of any vice-consulates, assistance in
execution of any documents for Italian ship masters, mediation in the
relationship with the customs, port, and local authorities, etc.
A close consideration has been given to participation of the Italian
subordinates in the commerce in Dnieper Ukraine, in which two periods may be
singled out. The first period starting from the first half of the 19th century was
marked by a predominance of the Genovese capital represented by 13
companies engaged in exportation of the Ukrainian grain that was supplied

under contracts to the main European ports in the Mediterranean Sea: Genoa,
Trieste, Marseille, and Naples. Cost of export operations of the Italian trading
houses reached millions of karbovanets per annum meanwhile import
operations were a fraction of the export ones. The main goods imported to
Odessa from Italy were natural products, building materials, dry goods from
Toscana and the Kingdom of Sardinia, etc., that were sold both in Odessa and
in the other regions of Ukraine.
In the latter half of the 1860s, the second period commenced that was
marked by an economic crisis of the late 1850s, winding-up of a number of
companies in the city, and formation of a com market in the USA. As a result,
only two Genovese trading houses, the Dall’Orso Brothers and Gerolamo
Assaretto Co., remained active in the city. In that period, in the city there
appears a Sicilian capital represented by the Anatra Brothers Trading House
that included an exportation office, a shipping company and, since 1877, a
milling steam-powered factory, and the Cotroneo family.
It has been proven that demand for Ukrainian cereals on the part of the
Italian and other European markets and satisfaction thereof with export
activities of the Italian merchants of Odessa was attributed to commodification
and an increase in volumes of production, modernization of the economy,
becoming of an institution of the mediation in commerce, creation of jobs,
development of certain groups of occupations and infrastructure in Dnieper
Ukraine.
For the first time ever there have been gathered and summarized the
details of the biography of most wealthy Italian merchants (B. Ponsio, C. de
Azarta, P. Cazaretto, G. Porro, C. Rocca, the Anatra brothers, G. Cotroneo),
their family relations and partnership, and main aspects of their economic and
public activity. The Italian merchants organised their trading houses, both for
their own money and for the capital of their family members and relatives or
foreign creditors.
The author has determined percentage of how the Italians were
represented in the industrial branch and the handicraft trade in Ukraine. First of
all, the Italians were represented in the food industry prevailing in the
production of macaroni and hard biscuits, marble carving trade and jewellery.
Goods produced by the Italian enterprises were sold out both in Odessa and in
the other parts of the Russian Empire and, besides, were exported to the
European and Asian countries through the port of Odessa.
