RUSSIAN REVOLUTION IN THE POLISH REFLECTION: J. TUWIM AND HIS
TRANSLATIONS OF THE RUSSIAN ÉMIGRÉ-WRITERS
LA. Ndiaye
The author pays attention to the Polish-Russian literary contacts after 1917. The
subject of critical analysis was the translation heritage of Julian Tuvim — the Polish poet,

translator of A. Pushkin, V. Mayakovsky. However, in his rich heritage there are also works
of Russian emigrants: L. Gomolitsky, N. Teffi, N. Evreinov, V. Khodasevich.
Keywords: Julian Tuwim, Russian revolution, Russian emigration in Poland, Russian-
Polish literary connections, literary translation.

held in 1931. The author examines the perception the role of the socialist revolutionary
party, the intelligentsia, the working class, the peasantry, individuals, programmatic

THE LEADERS OF THE KADET PARTY IN EMIGRATION: THE COMPREHENSION
OF THE TRAGIC EXPERIENCE OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
L.N. Lisenkova
The emigration became for the Kadet Party leaders a place for mature reflection on
the Russian liberal renewal failure in 1917. The «October finale» sounded for them as the
result of ambiguous position kept by the Mensheviks and the Socialist-Revolutionaries.
By flatly rejecting applying any force by the State, the revolutionary democracy doomed
the Government to nonfeasance. The weakness of the Government led to anarchism and
extremism tendencies growth. It was in the summer of 1917 when the Kadets considered
the military dictatorship as an alternative to Bolshevism. The slogan «Kornilov or Lenin»
was the quintessence of the choice that Russia faced, according to the definition of
P.N. Milyukov, the leader of the Kadet Party. The blame for Bolsheviks coming to power
liberals laid on the Prime Minister A.F. Kerensky personally as he by «betrayal» of General
L.G. Kornilov in August of 1917 refused the last opportunity for the country to create a
strong national rule. However, the Kadets accepted their fault that also led to the defeat
of democratic movement. The fatal error made by the Party of National Freedom was the
urge to continue the war. In historical memoirs of P.N, Milyukov is given also in-depth
analysis of objective prerequisites for Lenin and his party to win.

THE REVOLUTION OF 1917 IN RUSSIA FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE «NATIONAL MOVEMENT» IN SPAIN
A. A. Tereshchuk
The «National Movement» was a unity of Spanish political parties of the right
ideology. It played an important role in the victory of the Nationalists in the Spanish
Civil War of 1936-1939. The members of the movement had a negative perception of the
revolution ofl917inRussiaandofthe Soviet regime. In their discourse, the word «Russian»
often was used as an equivalent of the word «Soviet». That confusion of meanings led to
the situation when some Russian White Émigrés that volunteered to the Nationalist army
experimented the negative attitude by some Nationalists. At the same time, the analysis
of articles and speeches of the leaders of the Spanish right-wing groups shows that they
made a clear difference between the Russian and the Soviet culture and understood the
tragedy of the Russian revolution of 1917.
Keywords: «National Movement», Falange Española, Primo de Rivera, Spanish Civil
War, Russian revolution, Russian White Emigration.

THE INTERNAL SPLIT: HARBIN EMIGRATION AND RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
M.V. Krotova
This article analyzes the internal split in the Russian community in Harbin in the
1920s about Russian revolution, its meaning and significance for Russia. Part of the
Russian colony in Harbin had adopted Soviet citizenship, another part remained in
«irreconcilable» positions. Special attention is paid to the reasons for the formation in
Harbin two camps - red and white, their ideologists, confrontation in different areas,
«turncoats» from one camp to another. The article is based on already published works,
the emigrant press, political writings, memoirs and documents from the archives.

THE CONCEPT OF «NATIONAL REVOLUTION» IN THE IDEAS OF THE ANTI-
BOLSHEVIK ACTIVISTS OF THE RUSSIAN EMIGRATION IN CHINA
S.V. Smirnov
The article is devoted to analysis of the characteristics of the concept of «National
Revolution» in the ideological construction of the major radical organizations of
Russian emigration in China: BRP, ROVS, Fascist Party, and the Union of the Musketeers.
These characteristics have a number of similarities, but cannot be reduced to a single
understanding of the contents of the National Revolution in the ideas of the émigré
radicals. The most common characteristics are as follows: the fight against the «satanic»
power of the Bolsheviks, which has a religious character and is not devoid of anti-Semitic
semantics; an act to implement the debt of exile before the Russian people, initiated
by specially selected and prepared by avant-garde; a prerequisite for the spiritual and
national revival of the Russian people and the progressive development of the renewed
Russian state.
Keywords: the National Revolution, the Russian emigration, China, the Brotherhood
of Russian Truth, Russian Common Military Union, Russian Fascist Party, the Union of the
Musketeers, M.K. Diteriks, K.V. Rodzaevsky.

EARTHLY JOURNEY OF ARCHBISHOP NAPHANAIL (LVOV) (1906-1987)
I. E. Putyatin, M.L. Afitsinskaya-Lvova
In this article, we tell the story about archbishop Nafanail (secular name Lvov, 1906-
1987), who was unfairly almost entirely forgotten in Russia, his life and work. He was a
descendant of the famous architect and distinguished representative of Russian classicism
Nikolay Lvov. As many descendants of Lvov’s family, he was gifted in many areas of life.
While he was forced to live outside Russia for the most of his life, archbishop Nafanail
(real name Vasily Vladimirovich Lvov) nevertheless always kept Russia in his heart and
soul. Having taken the vows, he served his devastated country and its people with best of

uses materials from 194S about so-called ‘dippi* — former Soviet Union citizens who faced
forced return back to USSR and possible imprisonment. Because of active position of
archbishop Nafanail, his diplomatic efforts, ability to persuade people and high spiritual
force, he managed to save many Russian people from hardship in soviet concentration
camps and from committing suicides.

THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION THROUGH THE EYES OF THE WRANGEL FAMILY
K. K. Semenov
Among the family stories of 1917, the narratives of the family of the last Commander-
in-Chief of the Russian Army general P.N. Wrangel introduce the great interest. Not often
an important and significant event in the history of the country is told by memoirs of
father, mother and son, representing a fairly well-known conservative family. Publications
of the memoirs of the Wrangel family were carried out by various publishing houses
already during the years of emigration, in Berlin. The memoirs considered in this article
describe the consequences of the overthrow of the autocracy sharply negatively, but at the
same time give us a complete picture of the perception of the revolution by a single family.
Keywords: Wrangel family, Russian diaspora, memoirs, 1917, Russian Revolution.

POSTREVOLUTIONARY EMIGRATION WAVE FROM RUSSIA TO NEW ZEALAND
E.V. Rudnikova
The purpose of the author is to create an objective picture of the postrevolutionary
(1917) emigration wave from Russia to New Zealand — one of the most remote countries in
the world. The basic sources of the research are English-language unpublished documents
from Archives of New Zealand and information from New Zealand newspapers articles
of that time. The conclusions are illustrated by real life stories of immigrants. They are
Russian soldiers and generals of White Army, civilians and officials, illiteracy peasants

THE RUSSIAN EMIGRATION IN PARAGUAY
E. Nakayama
The first contacts between the Tsarist Empire of Russia and the Republic of Paraguay
date from the time of the government of Francisco Solano López (1862-1870) and were
formalized at the beginning of the 20th century during the provisional government of
President Emiliano González Navero (1908-1910) with the accreditation of Count
Mauricio Prozar. Also, during the constitutional presidency of Eduardo Schaerer Vera y
Aragón (1912-1916) ties are deepened that would allow, in a not too distant future, the
arrival of Russian exiles to Paraguay. As a result of the Bolshevik revolution (1917) and
the Red Terror (1918), White emigration, also known as the Russian exodus, in its most
intense recorded period (1917-1920), initiated a real diaspora whose number of displaced,
according to different authors, ranged from one to two million anticommunist Russians.
Unlike previous exoduses, it was not limited to Europe, but it also crossed the Atlantic
Ocean with the United States and Canada as its main destinations in North America
and Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay in South America. This article will
give a brief account of the bilateral relations between the two nations, the beginning of
the Russian immigration into Paraguay and the contributions of this community in the
defense and development of the country.
Keywords: Great October Revolution, Russia, Paraguay, Russian emigration, Russian
emigration in Paraguay.

ON THE CONCEPT OF EXPERIENCE IN RUSSIAN ÉMIGRÉ PHILOSOPHY
Yuki Hayashi
Perejivanie is one of the most conspicuous and cardinal concepts in the history of
Russian philosophy and culture. On the one hand, the essence of this concept is deeply rooted
in the Russian national character; on the other, the equivalents to the Western variation
«experience» in English or «expérience» in French, principally mean irrationality of human
life in the capacity of the psychological category of self-knowledge. In our consideration,
except for the necessity of giving an explanation of the variety of the concept directed toward
a Japanese readership, the significance of our study is in the definition of the Russian term
in comparison with the Western words in the context of Russian émigré philosophy of the
twentieth century. The main research subjects are S. I. Hessen, G. D. Gurvitch, and J.-P. Sartre.
Keywords: experience, emotion, Gurvitch, Hessen, psychologism, philosophy of life,

ALGIRDAS fULIEN GREIMAS AND LEV KARSAVIN: RUSSIA ABROAD AND THE
EUROPEAN SEMIOTICS
LG. Merkulova
2017 is a jubilee year for European semiotics, since a French semiotics and linguist of
Lithuanian origin Algirdas fulien Graimas was born in Tula a hundred years ago. His path
of a scientist he began in the thirties of the last century in Kaunas University. His teacher
686

at the Department of World History was the Russian philosopher Lev Karsavin, who after
the revolution emigrated to France, and then to Lithuania. We present an analysis of the
latest literary and philosophical work of Graimas «On imperfection» (De l’imperfection,
Perigueux, Fanlac, 1987), written under the influence of Karsavin’s ideas. For the first
time, a parallel will be drawn between the study of Greimas and Karsavin’s treatise On
Perfection (1952). Greimas appears not only as a linguist-semiotic, mythologist and
structuralist, but also as a poet and philosopher. Thus, the Russian philosophical school
abroad, in particular, Karsavin’s work had a significant impact on the development of
modern European semiotics, through the school of Greimas and his followers in France,
Italy, Belgium, Latin America and Russia.
Keywords: experience, emotion, Gurvitch, Hessen, psychologism, philosophy of life,
ontology.

1917 AND THE EMIGRATION OF POLISH ACADEMICS OF PETROGRAD
UNIVERSITY
A.Yu. Bazhenova
The author of the article analyses how the events of 1917 influenced the fate of the
Polish academics of Saint Petersburg Imperial University. The focus is on those scholars
who, after the evacuation, worked at the University of Lublin, namely: Jan Baudouin de
Courtenay, Bronislaw Bouffall, Stanislaw Ptaszycki, Konstantin Chylinski, Alexander
Kossowski, Jerzy Fiedorowicz and Stefan Srebrny. The article examines the national
identifications of these scholars, analyses the reasons and circumstances of their leaving
for Poland. The author shows how the professional experience and the «cultural baggage»
obtained in Russia influenced further life and academic strategies of the emigrant scholars.
Consideration of these problems provides an opportunity to answer the question: is there
any reason to classify the academics of Polish origin working at the Saint Petersburg
University as belonging to Russian emigration?
Keywords: Petrograd University, academics, Poles, emigration, J. Baudouin
de Courtenay, B. Bouffall, S. Ptaszycki, K. Chylinski, A. Kossowski, J. Fiedorowicz,

RUSSIAN GRAVES IN ZAGREB CEMETERIES
I.I. Grubmair
The article is devoted to the history of Russian graves in the cemeteries of Zagreb,
and covers the period from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. It
examines the key stages of the formation of the Russian necropolis in the Croatian capital,
and summarizes new material on the subject. Through the prism of the history of burials,
the fate of Russian emigrants to Croatia is being traced. The work addresses the issue
of the preservation of historic heritage, such as the construction of the Chapel of the
Holy Resurrection of Christ (1928) and the Common Grave (1930), or the erection of a
monument in 2007 for Russian priests who were executed in 1945. Special attention is paid
to the urgent problem of the exhumation of the graves of prominent Russian scientists,
figures of culture and art, and military personnel. In conclusion, the current activities of
Russian compatriots, which are aimed at the preservation of the Russian necropolis in
Zagreb, are being presented.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION OF 1917 AND PILKIN - GAVRILOV FAMILY
I. K. Gavriloff
The article tells about the vicissitudes of the fate of the Pilkin-Gavrilov family, who
lived in the Russian cities of St. Petersburg and Borovenka, and also in the city of Revel
(now Estonia) during the 1917 revolution and the subsequent civil war of the 1920s. The
author is a descendant of this family and therefore most of the information comes from
oral transmission. The transcendental moments of family history are described: the
scattering of the family nucleus around these three cities during the 1917 revolution, the
efforts of parents in subsequent years to reunite the family. It tells how the family found
in Argentina a new family home by the end of the 1930s.
