TERRITORIES IN MONTENEGRO
Resume
Our onomastic dictionary of Albanian territories in Montene-
gro, is of a particular interest for the Albanian linguistics and
particularly for tiie history of this country. Therefore, seeing as
such* I worked without stopping and persistently to achieve the
objective and our long lasting goal, concluding totally according to
our forecasts this toponomastic dictionary of Albanian territories, a
multi-year research project in the Sector of Dialectology of the
Institute of Albanology in Prishtina. This onomastic dictionary,
observed from our broad perspective, captures a vast and rich eth-
nic Albanian territories such as: Plava, Gucia, Rozhaja, Triesh/
Triepsh, Gruda, Traboin - Hot, Koja, Fundnave, Ledina, Lopar, Lu-
har, Tuz of Kraja and its mountains, Shestan, Ana e Malit, Ulqin,
and Tivar with the hinterland. Thus, by passing to these Albanian
territories we have researched, checked, collected, systemized and
surveyed the toponomastic material, somewhere more present and
somewhere less, in order to compile our vocabulary. So, all this
rich toponomastic material had been collected from the Albanian
native people, respectively by orality, through successive dialecto-
logical expeditions.
Furthermore, in our vocabulary, which expects soon to see
the light of publication, we have collected smother very rich
toponomastic material published in our magazines. In the wake of
this being said by us, a whole number of linguistic works of this

field of our and foreign authors and scholars, have given to us a
mighty hand.
After the independence in 1912, Albania s political situation
was complicated. In the North, Montenegrin armies had surrou-
nded Shkodra. On 22 March 1913, the Conference of Ambassadors
decided ultimately for the Northwestern Albanian borders, tearing
unfairly, from its trunk, among others, also Albanian territories of
Plava, Gucia, Triepsh, Gruda, Traboin, Hot, Koja, Fundnave, Tuz,
Kraja and of its mountains, Shestan, Ana e Malit, Ulqin with the
surroundings, and Tivar with the hinterland. In this way, this part
of the Albanian territory was annexed to Montenegro (Bahri Beci,
Té folmet Veriperéndimore té shqipes dhe sistemi fonetik i sé fol-
mes sé Shkodrés, (Northwestern dialects of Albanian Language and
phonetic system of the Dialect of Shkodra), Tirana 1995, f.14-15).
In our vocabulary they have taken place an entire number of
macrotoponyms, microtoponyms, oikonyms, oronyms, hydronyms,
natural monuments, towns, ruins, ravaging, moats, castles, tumuli,
names, and many others, of the Albanian tradition, and a whole
number of neighborhood names, brotherly, tribal, provincial, and
patronymics, topical names of mythical beings, as well as a whole
range of tracks and also Christian religious monuments of Roman
rite, which are preserved all over, in petrified shape of territory
toponomastics of Albanian language. Thus, we encounter a topical
system names, belonging to very early Christianity among the Al-
banians. Among others, we encounter also a whole typical names
of saints, priests, friars, according to Jesuit and Franciscan rules,
which speak convincingly about ancient Albanian Christianity,
namely of our ancestors in these Albanian territories. On the other
hand, some religious monuments that coexist in petrified shapes in
toponymy, can also be encountered as designation of some Alba-
nian settlements.
In addition to being said, in our toponomastic vocabulary, we
have interposed an entire number of toponymic legends and
moreover unspecified topical names, usually collected from the
epic of the frontier warriors, known all over ethnic Albanian lands

of the Albanian northwest sub dialect as Kang (e) / Katk
mogme per Mujin dhe Halilin (Old Songs about Muji and Halili).
Furthermore, this dictionary consists of a whole number of topical
names from the fields of archeology, astronomy and paganism, etc.
Meanwhile, all this toponomastic material is a documented
proof of the antiquity, originality, authentic dialectal coloration,
identity of autochthonous continuity and uninterrupted Illyrian-
Arberor -Albanian .
Generally names in our toponomastic vocabulary belong to
our Albanian national tradition, which are usually characterized by
a whole system specifications, respectively elements of great Alba-
nian national values, such as their continuity, Ulyrian-Arberor-
Albanian origin, ethno-cultural physiognomy, epic and mythologi-
cal strength, of Albanian native territory, the diversification of the
formation of words, local suffixes, invincible strength of resistance
in centuries, against assimilating, pervasive, furious and incessant
pressures of Romanticism, Hellenism, Ottoman, Slavism where in
this direction were always leading early and later Slavic rulers
headed by pravoslavac church. And, nevertheless, still alive!
In this linguistic work of our onomastic field we consider of
a special interest for the Albanian linguistics an entire system of
toponimic forms of diminutive suffixes and suffixes with emollient
connotation, as th and z(e). These words coexist densely in all over
ethnic Albanian territories. So continually they belong to Albanian
native language, and as such are preserved in our speech voca-
bulary of our dialects, in these parts of the Albanian territories.
Also, in the today’s toponymy of the ethnic Albanian tern to-
lies in Montenegro, it is included in our toponomastic study and i
is extremely noticed the proposition ne/na (we / us), which i:
usually used to mark or construct a local relationship as a commoi
determiner of property in accusative case, as in toponymy and ii
all over popular vocabulary. A syntax phenomenon of the wholt

On the other hand, it should be stated that in our topono-
mastic vocabulary of today there are preserved a whole of ancient
and intermediate grammatical features of Albanian Language. Thus
densely it is preserved the old ending of the genitive case without
epethentic -v, the old ending of ablative case with -sh, the pre
articles of brotherly, tribes, villages, towns, and provinces’ names.
Moreover, except these features, there is preserved densely the old
type of triple and fourfold names and fourfold patronymic names,
especially in the ethnic Albanian territories of Malesia e Madhe
and of Plava and Gucia region. However, it is of a particular in-
terest that the suffix -anj belongs to the genesis period of Albanian
language. For example: Dedanj, Bardhanj, village names of the
Albanian ethnic region of Shestani. So this suffix is maintained
also in other settlements, brotherly and tribes.
Finally, from what was said above, the today’s toponomastic
of Albanian ethnic territories in Montenegro, observed from the
historical, linguistic, ethnic and geographic point of view, from
Illyrian time until nowadays, has maintained accordingly through
historical trails, the continuity and unitary line, inseparable from
Ulyrian-Arberore -Albanian onomasticon.
