SVETLANA ANTONOVSKA
- THE MACEDONIAN IRON LADY
Summary
This monograph is dedicated to the life and
work of Svetlana Antonovska (1952-2016), a dis-
tinguished member of our society, a renowned pol-
itician and scientist who was the founder of con-
temporary statistics in the Republic of Macedonia
after it gained its independence from Yugoslavia
(1991). The need for compiling and publishing of
this monograph is due to the fact that the work of
Antonovska and her social, political and profession-
al, i.e. scientific commitment in the period since in-
dependence have not been fully valued in the Mace-
donian society although the time distance between
their enactment and the contemporary moment not
only allows, but also demands such an endeavour.
Besides presenting a detailed chronological data
as regards the previously mentioned Antonovska’s
commitments, one of the major aims in preparing
this publication was to make it a “channel” through
which her voice, attitude, and vision from the differ-
ent periods of her activity and work will be spread
further in our times. More precisely, this publica-
tion’s goal is not only to draw on Antonovska’s life
and work, but also to present a picture of the time
when she worked and thus to become a witness of
the time and the events she took an active part in.
Based on information and data received from
archive documentation, working materials, scientif-
ic articles, written records by witnesses who give
account of events with historical importance, ar-
ticles from the daily and weekly newspapers and
magazines, as well as on other relevant sources of
information, the first part of this monograph com-
prises the overall period of Antonovska’s work and
achievement in the sphere of her social and political
engagement starting from the early 70s of the previ-
ous century until the last years of her life.
In the course of her early social and political
activities, Antonovska becomes a prominent presi-
dent of the Youth Organization of Skopje in a time
of swift development of specific social and polit-
ical conditions in Macedonia (as a result of those
happening in Yugoslavia), a time when the Youth
Organization was regarded as one of the pivotal
organizations in the society. The period during the
80s, when Antonovska leads this organization in
Skopje, is marked as being an avant-garde period
of changes during which the young people from
the city received a more important role in defining
and carrying out the policies relevant to the soci-
ety, a period of greater opportunities when, despite
the existence of serious barriers and obstacles, the
young person could be active and creative, could be
regarded as a resourceful factor in transforming his/
her own reality. Antonovska’s overall engagement
in the Youth Organization, initially as a member of
the board on federal level, was in the spirit of her
rebelliousness and uncompromising determination,
combined with her insistence to see the young not
as objects, but as major subjects in the process of
creating their social and political reality. She stands
out with her progressive attitudes and endeavours
to undertake concrete actions for positive chang-
es. As a result of her not always being understood
and supported by her contemporaries, some of her
visions for the further development of the society
remain only partially implemented. In the 90s she
also confirms herself as a politician as she is elected
a Presidium member of the Central Committee of
the Party. During this period her constructive and
argumentative criticism based on concrete data and
fact, as well as her activities conducted in the at-
tempt to perform fundamental reforms, combine in
her visionary ideas as regards the necessary chang-
es that would eventually happen in the future, but
only under the presumption that the reforms that
she stands for are to be carried out not formally, but
essentially.
In 1986 she is appointed a director of the Sta-
tistical Office of Macedonia for the first time.
It is a period when she focuses and directs her-
self exclusively towards her greatest passion - sta-
tistics, and to the institution she dedicates her entire
468 HA AHTOHOBCKA MAKE/fOHCKATA HEJMHHA /I AM A CBETJ1AHA AHTOHOBCKA MAKifipHCKATA WWU
life to, responding and tackling a great number of
challenges. In the time when the Macedonian Sta-
tistical Office is under the auspices of the Feder-
al Statistical Office that leads and coordinates the
federal system of statistics, Antonovska yet again
stands out with her efforts to improve the Macedo-
nian system of statics in order to meet the European
standards, which she succeeds in doing, bearing in
mind the limits and difficulties imposed by the fed-
eral leadership.
After Macedonia gains its independence, i.e.
after Macedonia departs from the Yugoslav Federa-
tion, Antonovska shows great confidence in taking
over the challenge to transform and modernize the
Macedonian system of statistics and to introduce
it into the European family of statistical organiza-
tions. In a short period of time, the Macedonian Sta-
tistical Office under her guidance manages to estab-
lish a number of contacts and cooperate with many
international and European statistical institutions
and organizations, such as the UN Departments of
Statistics in Geneva and New York, EUROSTAT
and the departments of statistics at FAO, ILO, etc.
Her personal engagement is crucial for the provi-
sion of statistical data about the Republic of Mace-
donia during the most turbulent times of the more
recent Macedonian history that, as early as then,
are comparable to the statistical data of other coun-
tries and could be found in numerous internation-
al publications. An internationally acknowledged
census (1994) that follows all established norms
and standards is carried out under her guidance. It
included the number of population, homesteads,
flats and agricultural enterprises in the independent
Republic of Macedonia. A number of opportunities
for professional and technical improvement of the
Macedonian Statistical Office were provided and
used under her initiative so that it could meet the
demands of various projects assisted and subsidized
by different international institutions, organiza-
tions, and foundations, FARE being one of them.
In this way the Office becomes an institution that
in its work successfully implements the operating
standards of such institutions in the member states
of the European Union.
During her involvement in managing the work
of the state Statistical Office until 1997, as well as
in the period after that (1998-2001), Antonovska
continues working as a statistician and as an active
instigator for advancement of the methodology of
statistics in the Republic of Macedonia. She is also
involved in the implementation of the standards,
classifications and nomenclatures used by the sta-
tistical researchers in the European Union and the
world. Thus, in the beginning of the 21st c., accord-
ing to official assessments, the Macedonian state
statistics is on the level of an average member state
of the European Union and it is a regional leader if
compared to other such national institutions in the
region. The capacity of our Statistical Office as an
institution is several steps ahead than the capacity
of the other state institutions. However, the political
attempts to interfere with the professional capacity
and the unbiased work of the State Statistical Office
eventually result in dismissing Antonovska twice
from her directorial position. The first dismissal
was in 1997, when she was forced to step down as a
director, only to be reinstated in 1998, and the sec-
ond one in 2001. The second dismissal is final and
puts an end to her long professional management of
this institution.
Antonovska has published a great number of
scientific articles in the field of statistics. As an in-
ternationally renowned expert, besides having re-
ceived various awards, medals, and acknowledge-
ments, she also received membership in the Inter-
national Statistical Institute (1996), the Association
of Balkan Statisticians (elected as its vice-president
for a term), the International Association of Survey
Statisticians, and the International Association for
Official Statistics. She is the founder of the Mace-
donian Association of Statisticians.
She also spends a part of her career in the State
Audit Office and in the National Bank of the Re-
public of Macedonia.
The second part of this monograph brings a se-
ries of personal accounts related to Antonovska and
her contribution in the field of statistics by her con-
temporaries - her colleagues and associates from
the Republic of Macedonia and abroad. The aim of
this part is to present Antonovska’s personality and
her work from various individual aspects. The nu-
merous accounts, however, also contain a number
of less known details not only about Antonovska’s
great achievement, but also about some key events
of our more recent history. In the end this mono-
graph also provides an exhaustive bibliography of
Antonovska’s work.
