Summary
Ludak Regime Re-education Programme.
Maria Jansakova in Ilava in 1939 and Her Cell No. 20
Hie book of Marina Zavacka takes notice of the less
known circumstances of the Slovak wartime national
populist regime that was, in its totalitarian essence,
aimed against any resistance. Hence, it was not and
could not be the “loving mother” even for many eth-
nic Slovaks, model Catholics, as it held them politi-
cally unreliable.
The national populist regime had trampled general
civil and human rights much earlier than the Slovak
discriminatory laws against Jews, expropriation of
their property or later deportations were put into
practice. The first thing to be done was to smash
the possible opposition - to conquest all the associ-
ations, political parties and newspapers. To smash
democracy. From as early as the autumn of 1938, the
Bratislava’s central government publicly threatened
their political opponents with concentration camps.
The detention camp in Ilava was established by the
end of March 1939, only two weeks after declaring
the wartime Slovak State. People were deprived of
freedom without due trial, which was, with respect
of the previous standard of civil and political rights,
utterly unimaginable. One of the first testimonies was
written by Maria Jansakova, the wife of high state
official Stefan Jansak. Both of them were part of the
Bratislava’s social elite over the period of the First
Czechoslovak Republic.
Maria Jansakova did not know the reason of her
two-month detainment. And the reason of her arrest
and imprisonment was also unknown to her inter-
rogator who only briefly noted during his service:
“I would like to tell you the reason, but even I do not
know why. Just confess to something; you will get
a reduced sentence.” When she was writing about her
experiences, her feelings were still fresh. She put her
memories on paper in November 1939 over just one
month, right after her release.
They are not the only published memoirs about
this camp - writer Elo Sandor and notary and publi-
cist Jan Gal-PodcTumbiersky wrote down their expe-
riences as well. Yet it is evident that their texts were
written after the war and they, as experienced publi-
cists and writers, put them into a broader historical
and social context. Jansakova’s book is much shorter,
less structured and it is mainly an immediate reaction
to the horrible experience that formed only a short
segment of her life, which is why it cannot be treated
as a classical memoir as far as its genre goes. It is
rather an account of a concerned observation, a pub-
lic diary, in which the author needed to let out eve-
rything she had experienced in the past two months.
Although at some point she could not but use soft
irony that helped her cope with the whole situation,
her memoirs primarily make us feel her huge shock
and trauma which she needed to come to terms with.
The central method of Jansakova is therefore an
introspection; she formulates her observations of her
emotional being of this hard life situation sincerely,
openly and very accurately. In order to do that, she
provides descriptions of the situation viewed from
a distance, while her particular detailed perceptions
closely capture the totalitarian character of the im-
pending national populist regime. In other words,
Jansakova does not pretend to be someone she is not;
she does not employ style to give account of her expe-
rience with prison, she does not extend her context
by political or historical circumstances of the time
and finally, she does not put more meaning into her
experience than necessary. Her testimony is all the
more valuable that it retrospectively did not try to

bring in knowledge and impressions from the later
development of events.
A note about this forgotten book published in 1946
titled “Cell No. 20” was discovered by historian Mari-
na Zavacka from the Institute of History of the Slo-
vak Academy of Sciences, while she was browsing the
post-war women’s magazine Nova cesta (New Way).
The original text of the book of Maria Jansakova
appears in this scientific publication as “a book in
a book”. Its first part includes an extensive historical
study by Marina Zavacka with a detailed report of
historical, political as well as personal and family
background of the case of Maria Jansakova. Zavacka
explains the contemporaneous testimony of Maria
Jansakova in the context of our knowledge about the
period, adding unique findings, revealing new links
and offering her own incisive comments.
