RESUME
The first part follows the development of scientific knowledge
about the disease. In the first half of the 19th century it was per-
ceived primarily as a disease inherited, incurable and therefore it
was not paid enough attention to it. That changed with the discov-
ery of the bacillus that causes the disease. The diagnosis of tuber-
culosis was a big problem for the doctors, being often confused
with other diseases that attack the lungs. Therefore, chapter de-
scribes the development of diagnostic procedures, from the most
primitive such as percussion and listening, to the use of x-rays.
Chapter continues to monitor the development of therapeutic re-
sources which rapidly transformed, and their use depending on
experience and opinion of each doctor. A variety of chemicals
were used, but they had mostly negative impact on the health of
the patient and the progression of the disease was even worse. On
the market appeared Kochs medicine called tuberculin which later
found a use as a diagnostic tool, following this medicine appeared
others similar substances, such as tuberkulol and tuberkulocidin.
Since the 20s of the 20th century there were used a variety of sur-
gical procedures that can be summarized under the term collapse
therapy. The basic of the treatment, which was used throughout
the mentioned period represents Hygienic-dietary treatment. But
the important thing is that at the turn of the 19th and 20th century
and especially in the second half of the 20th century was appear-
ing new paradigm - until doctors deal with the cases of already
started illness, but now trying to prevent the disease. In relation
with this change was invented BCG vaccine, which is used until
today.
RESUME
The second chapter is devoted to scientific discourse. The au-
thor watched the contemporary doctors about their opinions and
how their view of the disease and its subsequent presentation in so-
ciety varies with the scientific knowledge about tuberculosis. It has
become a social problem as a result of recognition of infectiousness
of the disease. In connection with this the enlightenment started
with main goal - to hygienization general public. It took place in
various ways and has been adapted to the needs of specific groups.
The enlightenment on the turn of 19th and 20th century primarily
focused on children, in order to prevent spreading the infection,
which is associated with the newly enthroned paradigm. Doctors
saw a solution in the education of society and therefore it was nec-
essary to start from the smallest who can learn the ordinance at
an early age, and they will be able to follow them throughout their
lives and then pass them to the future generations.
Third chapter follows tuberculosis reflection in contemporary
Czech literature. The author worked with verifiable thesis for foreign
literature where tuberculosis has been used as a metaphor, mainly
represented a kind of catharsis. However, it was not used as a tool
in the Czech literature. Mostly it was only side topic in the context
the main one which did not allow deeper analysis for the author.
The authors focused on physical description who were described as
emaciated, pale, sweating, suffering from high fevers which resulted
in hallucinations. But the question remains, why was this so? Why
was not a disease introduced closer, more exploited? This disease in-
fluenced whole society so it could be expected it will reflect in litera-
ture as well. The next part of the chapter analysis Jifi Wolker s work,
an important poet, who suffered from tuberculosis illness and it be-
came the inspiration for many of his poems. His work is analyzed in
separate part mainly because he suffered from illness and his inner
feelings affected his work. His poems remain the most important leg-
acy of tuberculosis in literature. The last part deals with theater plays
for children. They are very specific topic mainly showing scientific

knowledge but it is necessary to pay attention to them because they
illustrate the cultural reflection of the disease.
Another chapter is devoted to the issue of tuberculosis among
the poor layers of the population. In relation to them the chapter
deals with dispensary which provided basic medical care. If some-
one opted for home treatment he first gets visit from dispensary
nurse to check the family situation and adjust the dwelling to hy-
giene requirements. Then the nurse visited the family regularly to
monitor the treatment. Emerich Maixner was a big promoter of
the dispensary. Thanks to him the first dispensary in Prague was
opened in 1905. Next part is devoted to Masaryks league against
Tuberculosis which was the main organ of the fight against the dis-
ease. Thanks to it a large network of dispensary was established.
And they are also presented as an organization active in the field
of education and hygiene. There are analyzed publications which
were regularly published by them. Many of the poor people pre-
ferred home treatment instead of clinic treatment. So, the author
tries to describe how the home treatment worked including folk
forms of the treatment used mainly at the countryside. The last
part deals with the comparison of the Czech and USA dispensary
nurses. Especially with their knowledge and the specifics of their
work because there was different environment and impulses.
The penultimate chapter is focused on the treatment in sana-
toria and especially on everyday life in them. There are introduced
different treatments that are used in sanatoriums and which were
affected by the geographic location of the hospital. Furthermore,
there is introduced life style at a general level, local food etc. Strict
daily mode was the main pillar of life in sanatorium and keeping
the rules was strictly required from nurses and doctors. It was the
key to heal the patient. For the patient, it was very stressful a soon
it became stereotyped and monotonous. By using the ego-docu-
ments there is analyzed personal experience of Jin Wolker s and
Frantisek Smetanas life in sanatorium.
RESUME
The last chapter discusses Hamzas children health resort in
Luze. The author aimed to track it in the terms of social aspects and
to introduce the life in this sanatorium. She was partly successful
however deeper look was impossible due to limited source of infor-
mation. There is a lot of information about Hamzas children health
resort but mainly they are institutional sources. Huge potential has
a wide photographic material that captures childrens lives in the
sanatorium, but also its individual parts and areas. The pictures
could be analyzed with the help of iconographic method. Due to
large range of the thesis this analysis was not done. But there is
a big potential for further research in tuberculosis or sanatoriums
in general.
Tuberculosis is an important topic that allows a wide range of
processing. This thesis was first and humble attempt. The author
has worked with a wide range of sources such as archival funds
deposited in the State Regional Archives in Zamrsk and National
Archive in Prague, publications of Masaryk League at the National
Library, contemporary medical files, specialized periodicals, lit-
erature and ego-documents. It is important to keep in mind that
at this time there are still alive some patients who underwent the
treatment in lung sanatorium. It would be great to try to contact
them and by using oral history trace their experiences, memories,
opinions about the treatment and the disease itself. There were sev-
eral educational publications, posters, films, theater plays, which
allow to deepen our knowledge about the disease presentation in
society and the cultural image of the disease. Last but not least it is
possible to follow the problem from the institutional point of view.
For example, the way how the medical practice was institutional-
izing and then analyze how the sanatorium environment affected
the treatment process.

Práce se snaží představit problematiku tuberkulózy z různých úhlů pohledu. Nastiňuje historický vývoj vědeckých poznatků o nemoci, věnuje se vědeckému diskurzu, zabývá se odrazem nemoci v české literární tvorbě. Rovněž je nemoc sledována v kontextu chudých vrstev obyvatelstva a jejich možnosti léčby. Prostudován je každodenní život v sanatoriu a osobní prožívání léčebny za použití ego-dokumentů. Pro úplnost tématu je z hlediska sociálních aspektů analyzována jedna konkrétní léčebna, a to Hamzova dětská léčebna</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">This thesis deals with cultural reflection of tuberculosis in the 19th and first half of 20th century. The goal of this thesis is to introduce the main issues of tuberculosis from different angles. It outlines the historical development of scientific knowledge about the disease, dedicated to scientific discourse, dealing with the reflection of the disease in Czech literature. Also, the disease is monitored in the context of the poor segments of the population and their treatment options. Studying the daily life in a sanatorium and personal experience in sanatorium using ego-documents. Práce se snaží představit problematiku tuberkulózy z různých úhlů pohledu. Nastiňuje historický vývoj vědeckých poznatků o nemoci, věnuje se vědeckému diskurzu, zabývá se odrazem nemoci v české literární tvorbě. Rovněž je nemoc sledována v kontextu chudých vrstev obyvatelstva a jejich možnosti léčby. Prostudován je každodenní život v sanatoriu a osobní prožívání léčebny za použití ego-dokumentů. Pro úplnost tématu je z hlediska sociálních aspektů analyzována jedna konkrétní léčebna, a to Hamzova dětská léčebna This thesis deals with cultural reflection of tuberculosis in the 19th and first half of 20th century. The goal of this thesis is to introduce the main issues of tuberculosis from different angles. It outlines the historical development of scientific knowledge about the disease, dedicated to scientific discourse, dealing with the reflection of the disease in Czech literature. Also, the disease is monitored in the context of the poor segments of the population and their treatment options. Studying the daily life in a sanatorium and personal experience in sanatorium using ego-documents.
