Summary
phers in these areas as well as justice which is a key virtue
for social life were what set down the content of the book.
In ancient times, there was a strong belief in the impor-
tance of political or social life in shaping the fate of indi-
viduals and in coming to their fulfillment. That is why
Plato and Aristotle could not leave that important area
without theoretical reflection, without sketching ideals or
normative models, and without some practical postulates.
Their contribution was to help in recovering the social life
and in generating its more positive infuence on individu-
als. Social life, where a special role is played by politics, is
an indispensable space where virtue is realized and the
fulfillment of man, which results from virtue, is accom-
plished. In some ancient political conceptions, a properly
arranged polis and a proper regime was considered as
the horizon of human happiness. It was changed only by
the Christian revelation and its prospect for the transcen-
dent fulfillment of man in his personal relationship with
God (the most perfect Person in religion). Social and polit-
ical issues, however, still had a basic educational signifi-
cance, allowing or impeding the fulfillment of man—his
happiness. That was the main goal of the state, which was
to take care of educating citizens and enabling them the
good life in accord with virtues. This thought is still cur-
rent, as the main goal of human life is still current too.
The subject matter of the book relates generally to the nat-
ural dimension, which is the domain of philosophy, but in
ancient times a religious dimension was already perceived
(naturally, not by revelation) and taken into account in the
consideration of virtue and the fulfillment of man. This
book is dedicated to the prospect of human fulfillment in
social (political) life and the importance of virtue in that
fulfillment.
