In rile first historical account of its kind,
Joanna Lewis explores the relationship between
emotion and imperialism, in Britain and Africa,
from the Victorian era to the present, hocusing on
the iconic figure of Dr David Livingstone, Umpire
of Sentiment moves between the métropole and
central Africa to reveal how his extraordinary
death and extravagant mcmorialisation down
the generations helped to forge a number of
sentimental myths about being British in Africa.
An emotion culture around Livingstone married
together British imperialism and Victorian
humanitarianisni to feed the Scramble for Africa,
sustain colonial rule, assist white settlers, anil
provide succour to Africans whose internalisation
of the myth became a crucial part of British
imperialism s soft power. Umpire of Sentiment
demonstrates how the sentimentality of ordinary
