Summary In the summer of 1940 Latvia lost its independence and became a part of the USSR. Radical changes in Latvian sports did not take place since war had already begun in 1941. Four years of war caused tremendous loss — both material and human. Sensing the iminance of another occupation, many Latvians left home as refugees and went into voluntary exile with the hope of at least staying alive. Many of pre-war Latvia’s eminent track and field stars fled their home including both Olympic medal winners — walkers Jānis Daliņš and Adalberts Bubenko. Many had already lost their lives in the “summer of terror” in 1941, many were missing in action —Jānis Dimza, Jānis Ķīvītis and others. Sports centers were devastated. Nevertheless, sports enthusiasts gradually renovated stadiums and training facilities. Competitions resumed — the Latvian Championship took place in the summer of 1945 and in the autumn the LR all-stars prepared for the USSR Championship. Many sports associations were established, the biggest were “Daugava”, “Dinamo”, “Spartaks”. Childrens’ and youth sports schools were established to train young track and fielders. The newly founded Latvian State Physical Education Institute (LVFKI) offered courses for specialists and coaches. In the winter of 1945 the Latvian Track and Field Leadership resumed its activity only now instead of being called the Latvian Track and Field Association it was the Track and Field Section and later the Fede ration. The first impressive results on a union-wide scale were posted by our walkers at the USSR Championship in 1945. It took place
in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine and the Latvian walkers did an excellent job — Arnolds Krūkliņš, Pēteris Zeltiņš and Arnolds Reldmanis won three first place medals in the 20 km distance. Until 1950 this trio, later joined by Adolfs Liepaskalns, was significantly stronger than the competition in all USSR Championships in all KOPSAVILKUMS 685
distances. These three masters, with their share of pre-war training, of the “heel-toe” received USSR Champion titles several years in a row. In the 1950s, however, success left our walkers and in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, only Pēteris Zeltiņš was included in the USSR team, but he was unsuccessful. The first post-war European Championship, however, in 1946 in Oslo saw long jumper Lidija Gaile successfully earn the silver medal. Still, the results posted by Latvian track and field athletes were very humble for quite a long time. There were still not enough sports facilities and they were poorly equipped. The pre-war city stadium was reconstructed a bit and came under the control of sports association “Daugava”. The small and comfortable YMCA stadium on Ķieģeļu Street became the center for the Department of the Interior sports association “Dinamo”. The Army had its stadium — ASK — and the “Spartaks” stadium was on the shore of Ķīšezers. Outside of Rīga there were very few stadiums — the best were in Valmiera and Ventspils. Most of the coaches were the best former Latvian athletes even from pre-war years (many of them returned to Latvia after deportation), as well as the first young post-war coaches. The USSR athletic leadership made a noteworthy decision to organize the USSR Summer Games in Moscow in the summer of 1956 — like a Soviet Olympics. It was planned that all the republics would send teams to participate in almost all the popular sports. The decision provided a serious impetus for productive training programs already in 1955. The Latvian track and field results
noticeably improved. Latvian records were bettered in one competition after another from early spring to late autumn. This happened a total of more than 50 times in 1956 — practically the entire record chart was “re-written”. A win in the Baltic Republics match and a new Latvian record in the javelin in the spring of 1956 started firture doctor Inese Jaunzeme’s unique road to the Melbourne Olympics and a gold medal. Within one year the little known javelin thrower reached the heights of Olympic glory. Track and field continued to develop in Latvia and the result of this development was evident in our athletes’ excellent performances. The new coaches and their intelligent and creative approach to their work was the basis for the progress. As early as the 1960s, the fruits of the work of Latvia’s best coaches paid off handsomely. Imants Gailis, no longer active in sports, began coaching sprinters and middle distance runners. Imants Liepiņš 686 LATVIJAS VIEGLATLĒTIKAS VĒSTURE. I944֊1991
worked very creatively with our jumpers and sprinters. The coaching process employed by LVFKI teacher and coach Valentīns Mazzālītis was unique, however; in just a few years a whole group of LWFKI students became excellent javelin throwers and decathlon athletes. The talent of Jānis Lūsis towered over all the others like a veritable Mt. Everest; along with his intense work ethic and success many years running he was unbeatable. He began training in 1957, winning his first European Championship title in 1962. In 1976, as he ended his javelin throwing career he had attained two world records, all three Olympic medals and four European Championship gold prizes. Just a few years later he was recognized as the all-time best javelin thrower and in 2015 he was the first javelin thrower to be received in the IAAF Hall of Fame. The excellent results posted by Inese Jaunzeme and Jānis Lūsis kicked off the Golden Age of Latvian javelin throwing. During this time Dainis Kūla from Ventspils won the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980. Elvīra Ozoliņa, wife ofJānis Lūsis, won the gold in the Rome Olympics in 1960. Noteworthy results were posted by Jānis Doniņš, Jānis Zirnis and Leolita Bļodniece. We should also not forget to mention Leolita’s coach — the outstanding pre-war Latvian javelin thrower Otto Jurģis. The support and training of the veterans always ensured successful young javelin throwers in Latvia. The secret of Imants Gailis’ success as a coach was in his ability to motivate his runners and foster continuous competition in group training sessions. As in the
javelin, also running had its two leaders —Juris Grustiņš and especially Genādijs Hlistovs, who won in both long distances — five and ten kilometers — in the 1967 USSR Games. They did so with world class results, I might add. In all fairness, however, runners from Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia and Morocco) were not yet internationally dominant in the sport. The students of Imants Liepiņš reached their athletic heights during the late 1960s and early 1970s. First — Juris Silovs, a young man from Ludza, set the Latvian record for the 100m run (10.33 sec) which was not broken for almost a quarter of a century. Juris Silovs participated in two Olympic Games and won medals in both in the 4 x 100 m relay as a member of the USSR allstar team. Another student, Inta Klimoviča, won an Olympic bronze medal in the 4 x 400 m relay. The valuable advice of Coach Imants Liepiņš also helped Latvia’s outstanding sprinter Vineta Ikauniece, long jumper Helēna Ringa and others. KOPSAVILKUMS 687
Coach Tālivaldis Budevičs, who coached the jumpers, also was an invaluable factor in the progress of the Latvian track and field results. His most outstanding students were pole vaulters Jānis Lauris and Aleksandrs Obižajevs, triple step long jumper Māris Bružiks and long jumper Anita Stukane. During the Soviet period (1945-1991) Latvian track and field athletes were part of the USSR team and successfully competed in all the largest competitions at the time — Olympic Games, World and European Championships. During this period four Latvian javelin throwers became Olympic champions — Inese Jaunzeme, Jānis Lūsis, Dainis Kūla and Elvīra Ozoliņa, wife of Jānis Lūsis. Juris Silovs and Inta Kļimoviča, members of the USSR relay team, also won Olympic medals. Dainis Kūla, who won the gold in 1983, became the first, and for a long time, remained the only world champion in the javelin. Hurdler Igors Kazanovs won a silver and a bronze medal in indoor World Championships. Aleksejs Lukašenko from Ludza became the champion in shot put at the first Youth World Championship in 1986. Another unique achievement by Jānis Lūsis — during the nine year period from 1962 to 1971, he became the European Champion in the javelin four times. During the entire Soviet period (1945-1991) eight more Latvian track and field athletes won European Championship medals — Lidija Gaile and Dzidra Levicką, Renāte Lāce and Jānis Doniņš, Ingrīda Barkāne and Inta Kļimoviča, Jānis Bojārs and Māris Bružiks. During this same period six Latvian track and field athletes won European Indoor Championships — Juris Grustiņš,
Inta Kļimoviča, Ingrīda Barkāne, Jānis Bojārs, Māris Bružiks and Igors Kazanovs. The only European Junior Champion was javelin thrower Leolita Bļodniece. Almost all the big competitions in Rīga (including the Latvian Championship and the popular “Rīgas kausi” or “Rīga Cup”) were held at the two big stadiums in Rīga — “Daugava” (before the war — the city stadium) and “Dinamo” (before the war — the YMCA). Both stadiums were reconstructed several times laying down increasingly more modem track covering. All of the biggest competitions during this period took place in Ogre and Jūrmala. Rural Athletic Association “Vārpa” came up with a wonderful innovative idea. Since the autumn of 1959, when the rural youth games were held in the new stadium in Saldus, each city that hosted the following youth games received a new and modern stadium. In subsequent years new stadiums were built in Limbaži, Cēsis, Bauska, Ogre and elsewhere. LATVIJAS VIEGLATLĒTIKAS VĒSTURE. 1944-1991
In the autumn of 1965 one of the most modern winter training and competition centers — the “Rīgas Sporta Manēža” or the Rīga Sports Arena — with a 150 m long track became a new and important facility in Rīga. After the half century long Soviet period, since the autumn of 1991 Latvian track and field athletes have been able to participate in all the major competitions with their team under their red-white-red flag.
