Zusammenfassung: | "After the Counter-Reformation, the Papal State of Bologna became a hub for the flourishing of female artistic talent. The eighteenth-century biographer Luigi Crespi recorded twenty-three women artists working in the city, although many of these, until recently, were lost and ignored by modern art criticism, despite the fame they attained during their lifetimes. What were the factors that contributed to Bologna's unique confluence of women with art, science, and religion? The Devout Hand explores the work of two generations of Italian women artists in Bologna, from Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614), whose career emerged during the aftermath of the Counter -Reformation, to her brilliant successor, Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665), who organized the first school for women artists. Patricia Rocco further sheds light on Sirani's students and colleagues, including the little-known engraver Veronica Fontana and the innovative but understudied etcher Giuseppe Maria Mitelli. Combining analysis of iconography, patronage, gender, and reception studies, Rocco integrates painting, popular prints, book illustration, and embroidery to open a wider lens onto the relationship between women, virtue, and the visual arts during a period of religious crisis. A reminder of the lasting power of images, The Devout Hand highlights women's active role in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Christian reform and artistic production."-- |

A reminder of the lasting power of images, The Devout Hand highlights women's active role in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Christian reform and artistic production."-- Sirani, Elisabetta 1638-1665 (DE-588)129354732 gnd rswk-swf Mitelli, Giuseppe Maria 1634-1718 (DE-588)122447131 gnd rswk-swf Fontana, Lavinia 1552-1614 (DE-588)119014793 gnd rswk-swf Fontana, Veronica ca. 1632-1690 (DE-588)1152345982 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1550-1700 gnd rswk-swf Künstlerin (DE-588)4033430-2 gnd rswk-swf Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 gnd rswk-swf Kunsthandwerkerin (DE-588)4488858-2 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Bologna (DE-588)4007616-7 gnd rswk-swf Art, Italian / Italy / Bologna / 16th century Art, Italian / Italy / Bologna / 17th century Women artists / Italy / Bologna / History / 16th century Women artists / Italy / Bologna / History / 17th century Bologna (Italy) / Intellectual life / 16th century Bologna (Italy) / Intellectual life / 17th century Women artists / Italy / Bologna / Intellectual life / 16th century Women artists / Italy / Bologna / Intellectual life / 17th century Bologna (Italy) / History / Papal rule, 1506-1797 Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Bologna (DE-588)4007616-7 g Künstlerin (DE-588)4033430-2 s Kunsthandwerkerin (DE-588)4488858-2 s Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 s Geschichte 1550-1700 z DE-604 Sirani, Elisabetta 1638-1665 (DE-588)129354732 p Fontana, Lavinia 1552-1614 (DE-588)119014793 p Fontana, Veronica ca. 1632-1690 (DE-588)1152345982 p Mitelli, Giuseppe Maria 1634-1718 (DE-588)122447131 p Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, ePDF 978-0-7735-5219-7 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, ePUB 978-0-7735-5220-3 SWB Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=030094316&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis KUBIKAT Anreicherung application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=030094316&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
