Abstracts
What does it mean to be Romanian in philosophy?
The reflexivity of philosophy and the recourse
to the topic of national identity
Preliminary remarks
My aim in this paper is to find some reasonable grounds for
a critical debate regarding the relation between the content
of philosophical reflection and the topic of national identity.
I have assumed firstly some theoretical and methodological
precautions regarding the need to avoid the concept of
ethnicity, to refute the kind of Hegelian philosophy of
history, and to ignore the essentialist presuppositions, on the
one hand, and the need to accept that the locations of
universal values are particularistic cultural forms and to
understand philosophy as a pluralistic domain in itself, on
the other hand.
Starting from these basic constraints I have tried to
offer four attempts to mark off the Romanian items in
philosophy, first, as a history of philosophy in Romanian
culture, second, as a philosophical tradition supported by
some cultural institutions, third, as personal experiences in
Romanian society, and, fourth, as philosophical thought
expressed in Romanian language. All these attempts are
only some steps toward a comparative philosophy.

The form without background thesis and Maiorescu s
contribution to the debate regarding the national specific
My purpose in this paper is to put into connection
Maiorescu s thesis about the form without background with
his beliefs about the national specific. Maiorescu claims from
the beginnings of his academic career that every domain has
its own criteria and that to try to invent others is a mistake.
So, in the case of literature for example, we need first of all to
write correctly in Romanian language. Without a
background we ll have only empty forms. But which is the
adequate content of these forms? Must be it a national one?
Maiorescu s answer contains an ambiguity which is open to
different interpretations.
Mirror consciousness, transcendental consciousness
and energetical personalism
In this article I ll pay my attention to Constantin Radulescu-
Motru original theory about consciousness. From his point
of view, although Kant proposed a Copemican revolution
regarding subjectivity and consciousness and surpassed the
traditional understanding of consciousness as a mirror, his
approach has designed only the formal conditions of subjectivity,
namely, the so-called transcendental subjectivity. But it is
necessary to put the problem of consciousness in a scientific
framework in order to regain the objectivity, the Romanian
philosopher claims. He tried to reach this aim starting from
his metaphysical theory named energetical personalism .

Ion Petrovici about Henri Poincaré or the role
of presuppositions in scientific research
In the year 1925 Ion Petrovici has published a paper about
Henri Poincare as philosopher. He tried to argue that
Poincaré was a scientist who understood that science isn t
free from philosophical presuppositions. Moreover, Poincaré
has developed a new vision of science based on the roles
played by the so-called conventions. My aim is to offer a
philosophical interpretation of this conventionalist theory
about science and to discuss about the main contemporary
approaches of it. I express my adherence to the interpretation
that conventionalism is a tentative to find a third way in
epistemology between empiricism and rationalism and that
conventions, as relativized a priori judgments, are created
freely by reason under the guidance of experinece.
„Dogmatic Eon ,,Methodological couple
and „Scientific theory
In his book „Dogmatic Eon Blaga tried to clarify the
methodological meaning of a dogmas. I argue that his theory
really contains a new approach regarding the two
dimensions of knowledge, experience and theory, with an
emphasis on the role of mathematics in natural sciences.

The critique made by Staniloae to Blaga s theory
about knowledge by revelation
Dumitru Staniloae published in the year 1942 a brochure in
which he tried to provide a strong criticism to Blaga s theory
of knowledge based on philosophical concepts like negative
knowledge, mystery and transcendent censure. This theory
is labeled by Staniloae as poetical kantianism . My main
statement in this paper is to argue that Staniloae and Blaga
share different paradigms regarding the relation between
scientific and religious knowledge. Staniloae argue that the
two types of knowledge are in a hierarchical order, with the
religious knowledge in the top because it assures the access to
the totality of existence. Blaga claims that the two are different
types of knowledge which have the possibility to reveal the
mystery in different manners to the extent they can do it.
The Theandric Mode and the relation between religion
and culture in Nichifor Crainci s writings
Crainic develops a public speech about the theandric
dimension of orthodoxy. He tried to put some concepts like
free will and autonomous reason in a new framework
based on a new approach of the relation between religion
and culture. He attempted to develop the theory about
creation in arts. He mentioned the role of divine
inspiration in creativity process and made an analogy
between the genius and the saint.

Conjunctures and essential facts.
Mircea Vulcanescu, chronicler and philosopher of history
In the year 1935 the Romanian philosopher Mircea
Vulcanescu delivered a daily heading on foreign policy
issues in a newspaper. My idea is that Vulcanescu wrote his
paper based on some philosophical suppositions which gave
a theoretical content to his comments. In this paper I have
tried to extract these presuppositions regarding the
international affairs. Vulcanescu claimed that the
conjunctures and the apparently insignificant fact have an
essential role in the evolution of international politics. His
conception is close to the so called Realpolitik, but he has
tried to assert in the same time that the humanistic values
have to guide the international affairs in order to have and
equilibrium between power and interests, on the one hand,
and the public welfare and morality, on the other hand.
Recessivity and experience.
The project of an inductive
metaphysic in Mircea Florian s writings
The original philosophical project proposed by Mircea
Florian is focused on the concept of recessivity and its effects
inside the categorical schema of metaphysics. The concepts
of open experience and datum are redefined so that the
construction of an inductive metaphysics become possible. I
try to offer in this paper a reinterpretation of Florian s ideas
and intellectual development.

Truth as value.
An interpretation from
the perspective of Vianu s theory of values
Truth is traditionally defined in epistemology as the main
value of knowledge. Other values, such as informational
content, simplicity or explicative capacity are secondary
relative to truth. But if truth is a value, what is its statute in a
theory of values? How can be truth acquainted by us as a
whole? The author tries to offer in this article an approach of
truth from the standpoint of a theory of values proposed by
Tudor Vianu. If truth is the aim of knowledge, what are the
theoretical consequences of this normative character of
truth? And which is the place of truth as a theoretical value
among other values? Is truth the supreme value in any
cultural context? This paper gives answers to some questions
of this kind, the whole analysis being inspired by Tudor
Vianu s ideas.
How is possible something new?
and the problem of empiricism
Noica proposed o subjective history of philosophy in which
the empiricism has its own position as an attempt to answer
to the questions regarding the possibility to gain something
new in knowledge. Therefore, tradition developed by Bacon,
Locke, Berkeley and Hume is described as a progressive
process in which the empiricist idea is carried consequently
to its last consequences.

Becoming as process in Noica s writings.
How is reversibility possible in the logical
model of determinations
My aim in this paper is to try to offer an exercise of
comparative philosophy: I compare Whitehead s metaphysics
proposed in Process and Reality with Noica s metaphysical
project developed in The Becoming within Being. I also try to
test Noica s ontological model with the help of some
scientific ideas, first of all, that of irreversibility. I suggest
that the two philosophers developed a new model of Being
and that Noica s new concepts, like ontological precarities or
becomance (translation proposed by Alistair Ian Blyth for
deveninta ), offered new insights into metaphysics.
The supplementary man
and the illness of unhabitation
The humans are placed between nature and culture
balancing between each other. They try to find a place to live,
namely, a house, which is an expression of many
ingredients: the fear, the cold, the hunger, the eros and the
so-called logos. But the contemporary people change these
relations, the equilibrium is destroyed, and they become
exposed to the so-called illness of unhabitation.

The boredom as metaphysical excess
and the fall into aphorism
The feelings of boredom are considered by Cioran as an
experience with a philosophical value which is able to inspire
the philosophical reflection. But a bored philosopher will be
against a systematic development of philosophy. Therefore,
the aphorism will be the best mode to do philosophy.
Historical fate and Romanian prophecy in Emil Cioran s view.
The metamorphoses of a severe criticism
I argue in this paper that Emil Cioran proposed a severe
criticism of the Romanian people starting from the idea of
historical fate. In the end, this criticism has been turned into
a prophecy. I formulate the hypothesis that Cioran
expressed three successive attitudes towards the idea of
destiny: rebellion, resignation, alienation.
