Zusammenfassung: | The Haitian Revolution may have galvanized subjects of French empire in the Americas and Africa struggling to define freedom and 'Frenchness' for themselves, but Lorelle Semley reveals that this event was just one moment in a longer struggle of women and men of color for rights under the French colonial regime. Through political activism ranging from armed struggle to literary expression, these colonial subjects challenged and exploited promises in French Republican rhetoric that should have contradicted the continued use of slavery in the Americas and the introduction of exploitative labor in the colonization of Africa. They defined an alternative French citizenship, which recognized difference, particularly race, as part of a 'universal' French identity. Spanning Atlantic port cities in Haiti, Senegal, Martinique, Benin, and France, this book is a major contribution to scholarship on citizenship, race, empire, and gender, and it sheds new light on debates around human rights and immigration in contemporary France |

Spanning Atlantic port cities in Haiti, Senegal, Martinique, Benin, and France, this book is a major contribution to scholarship on citizenship, race, empire, and gender, and it sheds new light on debates around human rights and immigration in contemporary France Geschichte 1700-2000 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Kolonie Politik Blacks / West Indies, French / Politics and government Blacks / Africa, West / Politics and government Political activists / West Indies, French / History Political activists / Africa, West / History Citizenship / West Indies, French / History Citizenship / Africa, West / History Kolonie (DE-588)4031790-0 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf Politisches Handeln (DE-588)4128597-9 gnd rswk-swf Afrika Amerika Frankreich France / Colonies / America / Politics and government France / Colonies / Africa / Politics and government West Indies, French / Politics and government Africa, West / Politics and government Westindien (DE-588)4079228-6 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 gnd rswk-swf Westindien (DE-588)4079228-6 g Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 g Kolonie (DE-588)4031790-0 s Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Politisches Handeln (DE-588)4128597-9 s Geschichte 1700-2000 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, hardback 978-1-107-10114-2 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, paperback 978-1-107-49847-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316181669 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext HEBIS Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=029908112&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
