HEDONE.
Plato s Philosophy of Pleasure
The book consists of five chapters. Chapter I answers the que-
stion what philosophy is and what place it occupies in the psycho-
-physical structure of the human being. The main subject of ana-
lyses is the dialogue Philebus, but the (re)construction given is
also supplemented with references to other texts {Republic, The-
aetetus). Pleasure is characterized as a sensation which results
from the effect of an action undertaken on the basis of some de-
sire. The desire can be provoked by a bodily or a psychical fac-
tor. It often appears as a symptom of a loss of natural stability
of the given structure (soul, body) and pleasure is experienced
when the structure is restored to its proper state. But the possi-
bility to feel the so-called pure pleasures shows that pleasure
comes into being not only with the process of restoration, but
also — in some cases - it can present itself as another condition,
namely joy . In Chapter II, the analyses concentrate on the dia-
logue Gorgias and the polemic with Prodicus and Callicles. It is
demonstrated that Plato endeavours to prove two things. During
his discussion with Prodicus, he attempts to compel him to admit
that something ancorporeal exists. Should he be convinced, the
sophist ought to reach the conclusion that there are not only bo-
dily but also non-bodily pleasures. During his dialogue with Cal-
licles, Plato tries to point out that extreme subjectivism is hardly
an acceptable philosophy. According to Plato, Callicles favours
the emotional aspect of the human being over the rational one.
Similarly to Prodicus, the sophist does not accept any division
of pleasures and his purely emotional and subjective view of re-
ality allows him to fulfil all his desires and to derive maximum
pleasures from it. For Plato such an attitude is tantamount to hy-
bris. Chapter III discusses how Plato divides pleasures (i.e. pure,
impure, mixed, true, false and so on) and what role these divi-
sions play in his dialogues. Chapter IV is devoted to the question
270
Summary
of the so-called hedonic calculus . This concept is developed
in the Phaedo and Protagoras. Analyses of both these texts allow
us to ascertain that if Plato seriously considered applying such a
calculus, it would only be used with regard to pleasures derived
from senses. Chapter V deals with the educational and political
dimensions of pleasure in Plato s philosophy. Here, the most im-
portant texts are - naturally - the Republic and Laws. Plato argues
forcefully that pleasure plays a significant role in both the indi-
vidual human life (from birth to death) and the collective life of
society. What is of paramount importance is that it permits one to
judge the moral state of an individual person and the whole state,
and, subsequently, to philosophically justify this judgement.
