SUMMARY
The incunabula of Ksi^znica Pomorska (The Pomeranian Library) in Szczecin
form a collection of 52 literary works comprised in 41 volumes. One of the bo-
oks is bound together with postincunabulum dated 1507. So far, these books
have not been thoroughly elaborated.
Ksi^znica Pomorska has been functioning since 1945, initially as the Mu-
nicipal Library. It took over the book collections and the building of the for-
mer Stadtbibliothek that was established in 1905. The German predecessor of
Ksi^znica Pomorska had been creating a collection of historic books, including
incunabula, since the early years of its activity. There may be several copies dating
from the pre-war times in the current collection of the Library, however, there is
insufficient evidence to support this supposition.
The literary works donated by Szczecin institutional and school libraries con-
stituted the basis for the collection of incunabula of Stadtbibliothek. In 1908, it
received books from Gesammt-Kirchen-Bibliothek which had functioned at St
James’ church since 1814 and had been in possession of combined book collec-
tions of a few local parish libraries. In 1910, Stadtbibliothek incunabula catalog
prepared by Dr Franz Weber was issued. It contained the descriptions of 43 lit-
erary works. Most of them came from the church library. It is obvious that the
prints on theological topics were prevalent in the collections. Apart from them
there were also works in the German language and the famous chronicle of Hart-
mann Schedl dated 1493.
In 1914, the unknown number of incunabula was obtained from the local St
Marys Royal Middle School (Königliches Marienstifts-Gymnasium), an educa-
tional institution derived from Prince Pedagogium, a semi-university established
in 1543 (Fürstliches Pädagogium, Paedagogium Sedinense). Presumably, the li-
brary collected about 50 volumes till the outbreak of World War II.
In 1955 the Department of Old Prints was opened in the library and it began
collecting books in a planned way. Within the first few years 28 incunabula se-
lected from so-called secured collections were obtained. The Collecting Centre
Ü3 21
of Secured Book Collections operated in the years 1947—1950. The materials
gathered in the Centre were sorted and distributed throughout the country to
different institutions which completed or rebuilt their own libraries destroyed
during the war. These were the volumes from St. Marys Middle School. In 1963
the Museum of Western Pomerania donated 11 incunabula, mostly of Stargard
provenance. The library gained other books either as donations or by purchase
from antiquarians or private individuals.
Literary works on religious subjects constitute the vast majority of the library’s
current resources. There are old prints referring to the Holy Bible such as a few
volumes of Nicolaus de Lyras Biblia cum postillis, Giovanni Marchesinus’s guide
to the Bible or Robert Holkot s comments.
The library abounds in homilies by Johannes de Werdena, Nicolaus de Blonie,
Meffret, St. Vincentius-Ferrerius and Petrus de Palude among others. The pres-
ence of Gesta Romanorum — a collection of morality plays primarily intended to
be used by preachers and a literary work Summa collationum by Joannes Gallensis
used as a guide for preachers and priests is noteworthy as well.
Epistolae by St. Hieronymus as well as Sermones selecti by Ephrem Syrus rep-
resent patristic writings. The works by Thomas á Kempis and Johannes Gerson
together with the work Corona Beatae Mariae Virginis are the instances of the as-
cetic-mystical literary works, whereas two editions of Legenda aurea by Jacobus
de Vorágine are the examples of hagiographic literature.
As for books on philosophy there are writings by ancient authors such as Aris-
totle, Cicero, Apuleius Lucius and Boethius as well as by medieval philosophers
and theologists, i.e. Johannes Versor, Johannes Duns Scotus, Angelus de Clava-
sio, St. Bonaventure. Sententiarum libri IV by Petrus Lombardus can be found
among the works of theologians. The Szczecin collection also possesses works
from the scope of ecclesiastical law, Margarita Decreti by Martinus Polonus and
Repertorium iuris canonici among others. Angelus de Gambilionibus’ texts and
Corpus iuris civilis are the instances of the writings on civil law. In the collection
of incunabula there are also few Renaissance humanists i.e. Lorenzo Valla, Ange-
lo Poliziano and Francesco Filelfo.
Almost all of the above works can be found in Poland in a number of copies.
Rationale divinorum officiorum by Guillelmus Duranti (no. 20) printed in Venice
(not listed in the Polish Incunabula Bibliography (IBP)) is the only exception.
The Lyon edition of Digestum vetus (no. 17) can rarely be found in Poland; on-
line data base shows only one owner in Cracow (Kraków J). Nicolaus de Blonie s
sermons (no. 39) is the only polonicum in the Szczecin collection.
As for typography the majority of incunabula comes from German printing
houses in several places, mainly in Nuremberg or Strasbourg (27 prints) and
Cologne (5 prints). There are also single items from Augsburg, Leipzig, Speyer
and Ulm. Apart from German printing art crafts there is also: Italian typography
with eight prints from Venice, Swiss typography with five prints from Basel and
French typography with one print from Lyon.

Most of the volumes have late-Gothic and Renaissance bindings while two
volumes are devoid of them completely. The fifteenth century bindings were
examined in 2011 by Dr Holger Nickel, who published the results in the „Ein-
band-Forschung” journal. The bindings were assigned to workshops in Leipzig
(10 vol,), Nuremberg (5 vol.) Frankfurt on Oder (1 vol.), Stendal (1 vol.), and
Strasbourg (1 vol.). In several cases, the origin of the bindings has not been es-
tablished. However, it is noteworthy that Opuscula by St. Bonaventure (no. 13)
where the upper cover endpaper of the volume is a colored xylographic print
presenting the author in a Franciscan attire sitting at a reading desk, is the partic-
ularly valuable item in the Ksiqznica Pomorska collection. Until recently it was
thought that only the copy stored in the Bamberg Staatsbibliothek had the men-
tioned-above colored wood engraving.
The provenance registered in the catalog indicate the twofold origin of the
prints — church libraries and private book collections. The books from St
John the Baptist Cathedral in Kamieri Pomorski constitute the largest group
of incunabula (21 bibliographical entries — over 40 % of the whole collec-
tion).
Following the adoption of the Reformation in Pomerania in 1534, the House
of Pomerania — the Pomeranian princes — became the superiors of the Evangelical
Church, and since 1556 the titular bishops administering the church property.
This enabled them to transfer selected book collections of Pomeranian temples to
their libraries. In 1643 a considerable number of books from the former library
of the castle of the Pomeranian dukes was transferred to the Szczecin school —
Pedagogium (later St. Marys High School).
The fact that a part of the Kamieii book collection was placed in the Szczecin
castle in 1810 after the Kamien Chapter dissolution is important in the history
of peregrination of Kamien books. Twenty years later (in 1822) this collection
was again obtained by St. Marys High School.
Wilhelm Bohmer (1791-1842), the historian and teacher, took to working on
the incunabula. There is high likelihood that it was he who assigned the signature
Cam. Imp. (Caminensis impressus) to the books.
Small is the number of entries in Kamien incunabula related to specific char-
acters. In 1539 or later the incunabulum of Kaspar Schulte, the last prior of the
Dominican convent in Kamien, found its way to the cathedral library. The vol-
ume also bears the traces of earlier belonging to the Order in Brandenburg, per-
haps Dominican. Nicolaus de Lyras Biblia (no. 10) was bequeathed by Georg
Nicolaus, the vicar of Kamien.
Presumably, Michael Westfal, the parish priest in Zlocieniec, donated his
books to the library. The note recommending a prayer for the soul of the bene-
factor was written on one of the volumes (no. 44). In the work of Giovanni
Marchesini Mammotrectus super Bibliam (no. 35) the note is accompanied by the
date 1482. This fact may suggest the need to shift the printing date of [ca 1484]
occurring in bibliographies to [non post 1482].

The incunabula of St. Marys Church in Stargard (7 works) constitute the col-
lection of prints which is less numerous but which also comes from a church li-
brary. The document issued in 1381 mentioned the „thesaurarius” in Stargard,
which may be associated St. Marys Church.
In the years 1816—1820 the book collection was transferred to the library of
Gröning s College (Gröningsches Collegium, Collegium Groeningianum) - a lo-
cal high school functioning since 1633. The combined number of incunabula
amounted to 116 after the church collection was taken over. However, some part
of the collections was returned to the church on demand of the church council.
The notes written by private owners can be found in the books from Star-
gard, Johannes Pudens among them. Four titles in three volumes (no. 18, 19,
28, 47) come from his book collection. Johannes Puden was a priest at St.
Nicholas’ church in Zerbst (1474-1475) and later at St. Mary’s Church in
Stargard. The records indicate the function he served as well as the circum-
stances of the acquisition of the books. The books probably became the part
of the church library after the clergyman’s death as there are no records sug-
gesting donation. Before they became J. Puden’s property they had belonged
to Stephanus Piscatoris, the bachelor, (no. 47) and to Egardus, the towns-
man (no. 18, 19). Henricus Albertus, the presbyter, was another owner of two
books from Stargard (no. 4 and 13).
Two other incunabula connected with Western Pomerania were donated to
the Ksi^znica Pomorska by the Museum of Western Pomerania in 1963. One be-
longed to Jakob Eichmann, the parson in Karscin (Kerstin) near Bialogard (no.
29), whereas the other belonged to Bialogardzkie Towarzystwo Historii i Wiedzy
o Regionie - Bialogard Society of the History and Lore of the Region (Belgarder
Verein für Geschichte und Heimatkunde) founded in 1921 (no. 30).
In the group of prints derived from private book collections from the regions
other than Pomorze there come the books of Jan Domanski, the Chancellor of
the S^cz Chapter. The other, represented in each case by one copy only, come
from private libraries located in the German-speaking areas, including Alsace
(no. 46), Switzerland (no. 24 copy a), Görlitz (no. 27), Velen and Münster (no.
40). Johann Heinrich Joseph Niesert (1766-1841), the Catholic theologian, col-
lector and antiquarian, was bound to the latter places. His impressive collections
were auctioned in 1843, and the work Praeceptorium divinae legis by Johannes
Nider was bought by (probably Matthias) Aulike (1807-1865), an official in the
Prussian Ministry of Education.
The descriptions in the catalog has been taken from the Polish Incunabula
Bibliography (IBP), taking into account the new arrangements, minor formal
modifications and basic literature.
The bibliography includes the items described directly in the footnotes and
the literature used in developing the provenance index. The bibliographic de-
scriptions are supplemented with information on the characteristics of copies
i.e. descriptions of defects and decorations, characteristics of handwritten notes,

bindings and provenance entries. Ownership records arranged in a chronologi-
cal order, were fully quoted and the shortcuts stemming from the Latin tradition
were expanded. Each description is concluded with the signature of Ksiqznica
Pomorska. One book bound together with incunabulum dated 16th century was
included.
The index of the printers has been made in a topotypographic layout follow-
ing that of the Polish Incunabula Bibliography (IBP), whereas the typographic
anonyms have been left unmarked. The provenance index has been made in al-
phabetical order. The last part of the publication contains the concordances of
literature and catalog numbers as well as of incunabula signatures and catalog
numbers. The entire paper is concluded with illustrations.
