EXILE AS A WAY OF LIFE
Andrei Codrescu in the textual space
of deracination
The opening of borders generates a fundamental chance in
defining exile as a lost territory as an idealize center of
existence becomes again accessible. Still, the elimination of
the socio-political conditions of exile does not eliminate
exile per se; all it does is to reinforce the feeling of
deracination. The opening of borders is indeed a recovery of
the initially lost space, but to this space, the exiled, does no
longer belong. At the same time, the possibility to cross the
otherwise closed borders generates the loss of the exile's
identity landmarks: if exile does no longer exist because
borders are now open, what/who is the exiled within this
new redesigned world? Thus, the disappearance of exile
generates a new exile. The individual is once again banished
from a second home constructed by himself within his own
deracination. Hence, painful identity questions are bom.
Moreover, the permanent feeling of dislocation
characteristic to postmodern times will transform any
individual into a permanent uprooted. Therefore, using the
term exile within McLuhan’s global village, seems at least
obsolete, as two questions recurrently request answers: how
can we still talk today about exile, when it disappeared as a
329
physical condition from the most parts of the worlds, and in
what terms can we use the word „exiled” as illustrative for
the human being? From this point of view, the present study
proposes a theory of the symbiosis between exile and
identity, appropriate for the contemporary status of writer,
caught at the crossroad between the banishment experience
and the relation with his own text, assertion of an uprooted
identity. The whole theory of exile as a way of life originates
and is consistent within the works of the Romanian-bom
American writer, Andrei Codrescu.
The wide area of the subject, the relation between exile
and identity, inscribes the study in the actual trends of
European literary criticism where increased attention is
given to the literature coming from former colonies and
minor cultures. There is also the trend of revisiting concepts
like exile, immigration, Diaspora, imposed by the permanent
altering of world maps, especially in the postmodern context
in which border inscription is thought as a purely human and
textual activity521. From this point of view, the theoretical
perspective over exile is sketched at the crossroad of two
types of discourse: post-colonialism and post-communism.
Moreover, poststructuralist theories have been used in order
to create a personal perspective over exile as a condition
characteristic to the writer condemned to a centreless
existence in relation to text.
As it results from the title, we focus on analyzing exile and
identity, two main aspects identified in the works of Andrei
Codrescu. Codrescu’s writings are used as both object of
analysis, and theoretical tool. Taking into consideration that
at a first view Codrescu’s style seems fragmented on both
the level of discourse and themes, the main challenge of this

Politics, University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis, p. 107.

521
double approach is the identification of a common thread
that links together all of Codrescu’s writings. This common
thread has been identified as exile, in the way the author
himself conceives the term.
The study is divided into four chapters, each one being
determined by the aforementioned aims of analysis. The first
chapter, being also the most extensive one, focuses on a
theoretical outline of exile. The reasons justifying this
analysis are twofold. The first reason is determined by the
present cultural conditions when we cannot think of exile in
the terms of a physical condition of existence. This is also
the reason why the paradigm of the word exile has been
enlarged so that it can encompass any form of deracination,
be it physical or metaphysical. Still, no matter the meaning,
the phenomenon seems always to be a characteristic of exile
intellectual discourse. From this point of view, we
considered necessary the analysis of the second part of the
chapter in which we focus on discussing exile as a
phenomenon of physical dislocation due to an autarchic
form of power. The third part of the present chapter focuses
mainly on defining exile as a status specific to the writer in
relation to his own text. The main aim of this part is to
outline a type of existence centered on exile, characteristics
to all writers. From now on, exile is no longer understood as
a singular experience that generates a special type of
subjectivity due to a physical deracination, but it is recurrent
every time the writer leans over his own text.
The second chapter tries to analyze Codrescu’s redefinition
of the term, as the author constructs in his work a unique
perspective over exile that brings together the two main
directions of interpretation aforementioned: physical
deracination and exile as a sin qua non condition of the
writer. The next parts of the chapter are tacking with this
issue: the main aim is to construct a unitary vision over
331
Codrescu's own concept of exile, despite the fact that the
writer does not approach this subject at every step of his
writings.
The third chapter continues the discussion about
Codrescu’s redefinition of the term exile. We also take a look
at the forms of exile embedded in the works of the writer.
Exile becomes a heterotopia, the condition of the writer, but
it also involves a political aspect. Despite the continuous
redefinition of the term and the focusing on a metaphysical
experience of deracination, socio-political aspect is still the
cause for the writer’s displacement.
The last chapter tackles with the problems of identity
within the context of exile. The explanation is that exile as
alienation, be it physical or metaphysical, displaces the
individual from the center of his existence and forces him to
face elementary questions about the self. The man aim of
this chapter was the demonstration of the fact that the
identity crisis, generated by an initial dislocation, is
endlessly perpetuated, especially within the context of the
contemporary uprooted existence. From this point of view,
we dedicated a first part of this chapter to defining the
concept of identity. Constructing identity in textual terms
renders the entire body of work a autobiographical character.
From this point of view we had to discuss autobiography as
the main identity expression of this particular writer. We
argued that for Andrei Codrescu autobiography goes beyond
any definition in relation to an exterior, being more a textual
act of constructing identity, and not its expression.
In the final part of the chapter, we aim at demonstrating
that for Codrescu the poetic destiny resides in a certain
sensibility of conceiving the world as a combination of
mystic and poetic. At the same time being a poet involves
the experience of exile in its twofold meaning, as physical
dislocation and textual existence.
332
The main point of the entire study is to demonstrate that
being a writer involves in Codrescu’s work the experience of
exile, experience that is under constant redefinition. Despite
this instability in meaning, we still can identify certain
constant features: identity fragmentariness, the permanent
reinvention of the self in connection to the other, nomadic
existence and the experience of reality through the sieve of a
poetic sensibility.
Also, our purpose was to sketch a theory of exile as a way
of existence, as it is described in Codrescu’s works. The
conclusion we reached is that exile, going further than any
physical determinants and being in a permanent redefinition,
is the constant characteristic of this writer’s life.
