SUMMARY
Burial complexes are the most informative group of archaeological sites of the Altai for Khun-
nu-Syanbi-Zhuzhan time and the early Middle Ages. The special significance of cemeteries for the
reconstruction of the regional history in II century BC ֊ XI century AD is determined by the lack of
settlements, debatable interpretation of the memorial objects, the complexity in defining of a chrono-
logical and cultural position of rock art, as well as the well-known limitations of the written sources
in relation to the periphery of the nomadic empires.
The importance of the burial complexes of Altai of Khunnu-Syanbi-Zhuzhan time and the early
Middle Ages, which can in many ways be concerned as the base for the Central Asian archeology of
that periods, caused attention of many specialists to materials of cemeteries. However, it is clear that
the information potential of necropolis of Bulan-Koby and Turkic cultures are not used in full. The
lack of experience in implementing a systematic approach in the analysis of the burial rite of the Altai
population of II century BC ֊ XI century AD defiines many debatable issues in the history of the
nomads of the region and demonstrates the need for targeted research in this direction.
The features of available source base, as well as the tasks determined the structure of this book.
The first chapter sets out the results of the study of the burial rite of the Altai population II century
BC - V century AD (Bulan-Koby culture). The second section provides the analysis of the early me-
dieval cemeteries of Turks dated by the 2nd half of V - XI centuries AD. The third chapter is devoted
to the reconstruction of ethno-cultural processes taking place in the Altai in the Khunnu-Syanbi-Zhu-
zhan time and the early Middle Ages. The authors carried out a detailed analysis of the materials of
excavations more than 900 graves belonging to different stages of development of Bulan-Koby and
Turkic archaeological cultures, involving information about ritual objects, accompanying equipment,
as well as basic information from written sources.
