Zusammenfassung: | 'Mistress of everything' examines how indigenous people across Britain's settler colonies engaged with Queen Victoria in their lives and predicaments, incorporated her into their political repertoires, and implicated her as they sought redress for the effects of imperial expansion during her long reign. It draws together empirically rich studies from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa, to provide scope for comparative and transnational analysis. The book includes chapters on a Maori visit to Queen Victoria in 1863, meetings between African leaders and the Queen's son Prince Alfred in 1860, gift-giving in the Queen's name on colonial frontiers in Canada and Australia, and Maori women's references to Queen Victoria in support of their own chiefly status and rights. The collection offers an innovative approach to interpreting and including indigenous perspectives within broader histories of British imperialism and settler colonialism |

Chiefly women: Queen Victoria, Meri Mangakahia, and the Maori parliament / Miranda Johnson -- Select bibliography -- Index 'Mistress of everything' examines how indigenous people across Britain's settler colonies engaged with Queen Victoria in their lives and predicaments, incorporated her into their political repertoires, and implicated her as they sought redress for the effects of imperial expansion during her long reign. The collection offers an innovative approach to interpreting and including indigenous perspectives within broader histories of British imperialism and settler colonialism Victoria / Queen of Great Britain / 1819-1901 / Public opinion Viktoria Großbritannien, Königin 1819-1901 (DE-588)118626876 gnd rswk-swf Commonwealth (DE-588)4010437-0 gnd rswk-swf Social & Cultural History / bicssc Colonialism & Imperialism / bicssc HISTORY / Europe / Great Britain / bisach Colonialism & imperialism / European history / Social & cultural history / thema Visits of state / History / 19th century Indigenes Volk (DE-588)4187207-1 gnd rswk-swf Great Britain / History / Victoria, 1837-1901 Great Britain / Colonies / History / 19th century Great Britain / Colonies / Social conditions / 19th century Viktoria Großbritannien, Königin 1819-1901 (DE-588)118626876 p Commonwealth (DE-588)4010437-0 b Indigenes Volk (DE-588)4187207-1 s DE-604 Carter, Sarah 1954- (DE-588)131722670 edt Nugent, Maria (DE-588)1108294243 edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-78499-140-1 (DE-604)BV043686088 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-5261-3688-6 https://doi.org/10.7765/9781526100320 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
