Mexico, the cradle of one of the greatest
original civilizations in the world, has an
important archaeological heritage. These
material remains are both the product and
the evidence of thousands of years of hu-
man development.
“Those who live in the land of rubber” —which is what Olmeca
means in Nahuatl— have been regarded as the earliest civiliza-
tion and, consequently, as the mother culture of Mesoamerica.
Both adjectives are certainly appropriate for a people capable
of extending beyond the boundaries of their original domain,
whatever it may have been, infusing their vigor to the rest of
the territory in Ancient Mexico.

In La Venta are the archaeo-
logical vestiges of the most im-
portant Olmec city of the first
millennium B.C. Amongst its
distinguishing features are its
extensive and planned archi-
tectural layout, the largest and
most varied set of Olmec
sculptures found at a single
site, and a magnificent collec-
tion of iade obiects.

numerous Olmec-style pieces
in the state of Guerrero had
been minimized; they were
considered isolated relics.
However, the characteristics
of the Teopantecuanitlán
(“Temple of the Jaguar Gods”)
site have revived ancient the-
ses which claim that the groups
that were the precursors of “the
Olmec” divided in two, one
moving towards the Pacific
and another towards the Gulf
coast.
