Les objets les plus ordinaires, dont la banalité se révèle souvent trompeuse, offrent l’occasion de détailler les modes de vie, la culture et les valeurs, singulièrement cohérents, qui ont marqué l’ensemble des pays de l’ex-URSS durant les décennies comprises entre la mort de Staline (1953) et le début de la perestroïka (1985). En contrepoint du texte principal, qui décrit les usages et les particularités de la société soviétique, les extraits littéraires et les photographies d’époque (certaines conditionnées par la censure, d’autres la contournant avec art) permettent de donner corps à l’expérience souvent paradoxale du quotidien soviétique : son rêve de bonheur pour l’humanité, transformé, dénaturé et véhiculé par un vocabulaire spécifique et des institutions singulières. À l’heure où les discours ressuscitent des préjugés issus de la guerre froide, et où l’affaiblissement des démocraties conduit à minimiser l’importance des institutions sociales, cette plongée dans les dimensions « humaines, trop humaines » de la vie en URSS – son idéologie toute-puissante, ses rituels de masse, mais aussi son humour noir, sa débrouillardise et ses tactiques de contournement – permettra au lecteur de porter son regard « au-delà du mur », tout en offrant de multiples mises en perspective. |

En contrepoint du texte principal, qui décrit les usages et les particularités de la société soviétique, les extraits littéraires et les photographies d’époque (certaines conditionnées par la censure, d’autres la contournant avec art) permettent de donner corps à l’expérience souvent paradoxale du quotidien soviétique : son rêve de bonheur pour l’humanité, transformé, dénaturé et véhiculé par un vocabulaire spécifique et des institutions singulières. À l’heure où les discours ressuscitent des préjugés issus de la guerre froide, et où l’affaiblissement des démocraties conduit à minimiser l’importance des institutions sociales, cette plongée dans les dimensions « humaines, trop humaines » de la vie en URSS – son idéologie toute-puissante, ses rituels de masse, mais aussi son humour noir, sa débrouillardise et ses tactiques de contournement –
