The art of film was borne out of scientific discovery and technological innovation. Contemporary
moving image media continue to be shaped by scientifically-inspired innovations, as we see with
the rise of digital cinema, 3D, and virtual reality. But now that we have film as an art form, do the
sciences continue to play a role in understanding and explaining how films are made and experienced?
Embracing a third cultural approach which aims to go beyond the two cultures divide memorably
identified by C. P. Snow, Murray Smith seeks to bring the arts, humanities, and sciences together to
illuminate artistic creation and aesthetic experience. Smith explores the general strategies and
principles necessary to build a naturalized approach to film and art-—one that roots itself in an
appreciation of scientific knowledge and method. Focusing on the role of emotion in the arts, Smith
examines, among other things, the role of facial expression in film in the light of Darwin s work on
the emotions, and the dynamics of suspense, shock, and empathy in film in relation to contemporary
neuroscience. While acknowledging that not all the questions we ask are scientific in nature, Smith
contends that we cannot disregard the insights wrought by adopting a naturalized perspective on
the aesthetics of film and the other arts.
