Dictys Ephemeris, therefore, was a skeletal frame which
constructed the literary superstructure onto which Mala֊
las added flourishes of ekphrastic portraiture, allegory
and romantic motifs. In addition to these stylistic inter-
polations, Malalas added a level of structural sophistica-
tion as well, weaving Dictys/ chronologically ordered se-
quence of events into a new tapestry which could further
tie together the two cultures from which the Byzantines
claimed descent: the Judeo-Christian inheritance through
the Israelite dynasty, by which, as the center of Orthodoxy,
the city was the New Jerusalem, and the Roman inher-
itance, through the Trojans, which the arrival of the Pal-
ladion marks as the New Troy.
