John Witte, jr, The Reformation of Rights. Law, Religion and Human Rights in
Early Modern Calvinism, University Press, Cambridge 2007.
Summary: Kalvinas Fideism and the Rebellion of English
Rationalists
Often the West-European Enlightenment is called the Age of Reason. This
powerful intelectual movement did not come into existence spontaneously,
ad hoc, but the cause of its appearance, step by step, was the overcom-
ing of fideistic Reformation currents by rational thought. Then, it is justi-
fied to claim: the Enlightenment would not come into existence without
Reformation two centuries earlier. This is particularly visible on example of
such countries like Holland and England in XVII and XVIII century, where
Protestantism in Calvinistic version essentially contributed to the process of
rationalisation of Christian religion, and in consequence to the appearance
of the post-Christian Enlightenment. Obviously, the Age of Reason looked
a bit different in various Western countries like Germany, Switzerland,
Denmark, Sweden etc. than in England. In this last case we can notice the
evolution, almost not forced by external (abroad) factors, beginning from
the times of the king Henry VIII (since 1534) until the Glorious Revolution
(1689) and the first thirty years of the XVIII century. It is a period of brutal
political-religious conflicts, the Civil War, political and religious intoler-
ance, and, for the other side, persistent search of peaceful solution of that
arduous for both sides situation.
In this monography all this period was demonstrated from religious,
moral and political aspects (passing important otherwise economical one
over) on the historical background. From the religious point of view this
process begins from intellectual activity of John Calvin, especially since
the publication of the last version of his main work Institutio christianae
religionis, where as a one of most significant themes is elaborated the so
called double predestination. Today almost totally forgotten question, at
that time, i.e. in XVI and XVII century, aroused many vehement discus-
sions among Calvinist communities and sects.
This gradual process of Christian religion (and supernatural theology)
abondoning for non-confessional natural religion (and natural theology)

was illustrated by opinions and thoughts of prominent thinkers of that time:
Jacobus Arminius, Thomas Browne, John Hales, William Chillingworth,
Benjamin Whichcote, John Smith, John Tillotson, John Locke, John Toland
i Matthew Tindal. We are speaking of long way from Dutch Arminianism
through so called Falkland Group, Cambridge Platonics and Latitudinarians
to English Deism.
Above mentioned philosophical and theological writers, coming from
Puritan environments, rose in rational revolt against Calvin’s Fideism.
Luther and Calvin have minimized the role of human reason on
Scripture’s studies, restricting themselves to make use most plain implica-
tion forms, and almost totally rejected as unnecessary: classical metaphys-
ics, philosophy of God, philosophy of man and ethics.
Rejecting hitherto existing intellectual tools and not elaborating their
own, they were not able to defend themselves before fideism in some theo-
logical problems. In the bossom of Calvinism was generated a negation of
fideism, and especially the double predestination.
From the beginning this latter was a tinderbox, which earlier or later
had to arouse rationalistic reaction. The first, not very bold attempt was
Arminianism. It undermined Calvinistic doctrine at that point, which
Dutch and English theologians were not able to defend. Later, almost every
“reactionary” English writer, including deists, depicted its irrationalism,
manifested itself with intolerance, fanatic enthusiasm and unlimited sectar-
ian divisions in Protestant movement. In order to prevent it and to find
again the lost criterion to make decision which of Biblical commentator is
right and which of them is wrong. English philosophers like Platonics of
Cambridge and Latitudiarian writers were indicating on human reason as
a main criterion in theological discussions. But human reason cannot be
functional without relation of any object sphere. Here this object was the
Nature (external physical world and internal world of man’s spiritual life).
But this put into operation metaphysical, anthropological and ethical reflec-
tion, what ultimately failed into the category of natural (rational) theology.
Its development was a remedium for overcoming extremely pessimistic
notion of human reason in Lutheran and Calvinistic supernatural theology.
Furthemore, English latitude theologians by liberation from narrow-
minded, fideistic views of Calvinistic theology (mainly, the double predes-
tination) were creating step by step new philosophical theology more as
modem philosophers than theologians. Among English rationalists of XVII
and XVIII centuries can one notice a following regularity: to the less and

less interesting in Scripture acompanied the growing significance of differ-
ent intellectual structures connected with largely understood law of nature.
In the place of decreasing interest in supernatural theology and Christian
dogmatics enters natural theology, which, in the case of deism, will replace
the Biblical Christianity entirely. It is not a great simplification to say that
English Enlightenment rised on Calvinistic ruins.
