Transplantation is a magnificent medical
advance, which can save and transform
lives. But it has a distinctive problem:
every organ given to one person must first
be taken from another—and not enough
people seem willing to give.
In this timely and important book, the leading
moral philosopher Janet Radcliffe Richards,
widely recognized for the clarity and incisiveness
of her arguments, argues that although people
certainly have strong feelings about their own
organs, the deepest problems may lie not in a
simple unwillingness to make them available,
but in legal and institutional restrictions on the
choices they are allowed to make. Through a
series of compelling arguments she concludes
that these restrictions are not justified by our
normal moral standards, and are not even a
response to popular demand, but lie in deep
preconceptions of the people who make
the rules.
Careless moral reasoning, like careless
