SUMMARY
METAPHYSICS AND DECONSTRUCTION.
In a search of metaphysical experience in the context of
the challenges of deconstructionism
The book that has been delivered to the Polish reader embraces a collec-
tion of papers poised to defend metaphysics/ontology against all kin-
ds of attempts at its deconstruction. The authors of the papers do not
strive to respond unequivocally to the concrete accusations of decon-
structionists, nor prove at all cost that deconstructionism constitutes
a defined metaphysics. Rather than that, they try to build metaphysics
of experience free from errors justly blamed on the traditional models
of metaphysical thinking by the contemporary deconstructionists.
As aptly observed by prof. Ireneusz Zieminski, the authors whose
texts were included in the volume belong to two, if not three genera-
tions of philosophers with a diverse historical, existential or religious
experience. Consequently, the book produces quite an interesting pic-
ture of intellectual dithers grappled with by the contemporary thinkers
who try to find a way out of various human dilemmas.
The authors did not aim to produce ultimate answers pertaining to
metaphysical experience per se or the way of practicing philosophy;
neither did they claim to enforce radical solutions to practical issues.
Rather than that, they aimed at a partial diagnosis of the situation that
befell to present day philosophy in the wake of the so called decon-
struction attributed to postmodernists. The authors present a balanced
point of view. On the one hand they appreciate the role of deconstru-
ction in metaphysics, on the other hand they warn against its uncritical
application in various realms of knowledge and the practical activity
of man.

Summary
In many cases, the presented papers are the fruit of the whole deca-
des of research done by the authors, who do not treat their strife with
deconstruction as a matter of fact research meant to earn points and to
win grants but a life adventure, a passion to give individual meaning to
their life, and in numerous cases prompt creative engagement in thera-
peutic aid to another person. That is why the presented texts are more
or less personal. Those attributable to personal experience are tainted
with non-reconciliation with the world, culture and human relations
which form various images of institutions.
To those less involved, philosophy is meant to resolve issues in
a precise and analytical manner. The papers presented to the reader
originate in quite different experiences which, beyond any doubt, are
linked by an uncompromising search for the truth. That search is fo-
unded on the unflinching conviction that the truth is not apparent. It
is rather hidden, not just in the fat volumes of learned books, but in
everyday encounters with oneself or other people who unveil various
countenances of the truth. The authors, who decided to share their re-
flections, find the truth not just in the written word, but primarily in
the encounters with the world, culture and other people.
Deconstruction is not merely a method of research which may be
learned by mastering its consecutive stages and then discarded, should
it not be proven by the practice. At times, deconstruction is simply
a way of life of a person who perceives the world in a specific way and
experiences it as an entity saturated with multi-faceted meaning, whe-
re it is quite easy to lose orientation and lose oneself. Most likely, that
was the way deconstruction was perceived by the youngest generation
of philosophy graduates for whom philosophy as a theory lost the qua-
lity of instigating creative thinking and activity. It has become more of
an obstacle to opening new horizons and perceiving the issues on the
borderline of various disciplines.
That is why they are uncompromising in the diagnosis of the cri-
sis of traditional thinking which may be overcome by opening to new
experiences shown by deconstruction.
A reader with an orthodox approach to philosophy is bound to be
unsatisfied with the solutions proposed by the authors. He will not find
the answers to many questions that he will ask during reading. It might
happen that the only outcome of reading will be a sad disappointment

and frustration, and in the worst case a feeling of wasted time. The
monograph is intended to invite the readers to a common search rat-
her than looking for ready solutions, to which many of them might be
used to.
The authors share the view that practicing philosophy does not
boil down to providing unquestionable replies rather than raising qu-
estions and searching for answers, which does not necessarily have to
follow a more or less complex system.
They drew a lesson from deconstructionism that discouraged phi-
losophers from searching axioms. In no case does it mean that the
authors condone minimalistic approach. More likely, they look for
whatever may be salvaged in philosophy after deconstructionism. They
do not share the view that deconstructionism work has been done.
More likely, it has revealed new research perspectives which have not
been noticed by everyone. That is why highlighting creative aspects of
deconstructionism may contribute to a new perception of metaphy-
sical experience issues freed from the burden of the past, where the
achievements of deconstructionists were not always welcome. Statisti-
cally, a majority of philosophers saw it as a threat to rational founda-
tions of knowledge.
Beyond any doubt, such threat was inherent and glory to those who
blew the whistle in time. Postmodernism to some extent cleared up the
air, particularly in the realm of foundations of metaphysics, considered
by its supporters the mother of all knowledge. This very claim of me-
taphysics, ontology to be precise, was radically questioned, and even
disapproved by some postmodernists who considered it an irresistible
trait of human mind to dominate the world.
The authors of the monograph cherish the Aristotle theorem that
every line of philosophy has a truth worth unveiling and pursuing, if
not just for cognitive reasons. That is because postmodernism highlig-
hted a number of important issues which were not perceived, more or
less consciously, by classical and modern philosophy. The authors do
not aim to convince the reader that the path to searching new topos
of metaphysical experience is ultimately justified. That is because fol-
lowing a certain line in philosophy and accepting the solutions it pro-
poses needs an a priori belief those solutions are true and unquestio-
nable. The authors realize that their views may more frequently instill
280
Summary
disbelief than belief. This does not disparage the view that philosophy
sometimes requires more belief than knowledge.
The authors invite the readers to follow that rocky path grooved
by deconstructionism. The path is steep, full of potholes and perilous
bends which one has to learn to bypass. Slowly, not trying to accelerate
not to miss something important or go astray due to haste or fright, or
the anxiety to meet distinct proposals that often question our ortho-
dox, seemingly deeply rooted convictions.
The authors are aware how often they have to stumble on the ob-
stacles they find. That is why they regard their considerations a mere
approximation to the truth, and not the ultimate truth. To a reader
used to excessively traditional schemes of thinking, the path suggested
by the authors might prove difficult, if not impossible to follow. No one
is to be blamed for that.
That is because everyone has the right to their own choices, even
in philosophy where the variety of approaches testifies to its richness
and not degeneration. The authors of the monograph strive to show in
a fragmentary way that variety of style and approaches. By no means
do they try to state which one is the right one. Rather than that, they
encourage a discussion, since only within its framework a valorization
of any theoretical proposal may be accomplished. However, the authors
cherish the hope that the proposals they have put forward will instill
creative leaven and a discussion on the new paradigm of metaphysical
experience devoid of which any culture is doomed to slow decay.
