IN MIDDLE CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE
INTEGRATING THE PERSONAL, SOCIAL,
AND EDUCATIONAL LIVES OF YOUNG PEOPLE
Bridging psychological theory and educational practice, Social Cognition in Middle Childhood
and Adolescence is an innovative, cutting-edge look at the emotional and social aspects of
young people’s development and education and how these may contribute to their broader
well-being and relationships. Sandra Bosacki challenges the dominant cognitivist view of
development, and instead draws on Theory of Mind to investigate how young people’s ability
to understand or make meaning of human thoughts and feelings directly affects their sense
of self and relationships in the classroom and beyond.
The book addresses pressing contemporary topics concerning young people both inside
and outside of the classroom, including socially withdrawn children, socio-communicative
competence, and peer relations. It is accessibly structured for easy use in courses, with
sections on research, future questions, and key learning points, and “So What” sections with
implications for practice. Filled with the latest research, this distinctive textbook introduces
the fundamentals of development in middle childhood and adolescence while also discussing
practical strategies for those tasked with helping young people develop healthy minds and
relationships in the classroom, community, and increasingly globalized world beyond.
S. L. BOSACKI is Professor in the Department of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies
in Education, at Brock University, Canada, where she teaches graduate courses in applied
developmental psychology. Her teaching and research interests include socio-cognitive,
emotional, moral, and spiritual development within diverse cultural and educational
contexts. She is Assistant Editor of the Journal of Adolescence, and the author of numerous
journal articles and books, including Culture of Ambiguity: Implications for Self and Social
Understanding in Adolescence (2012), Children’s Emotional Lives: Sensitive Shadows in the
Classroom (2008), and The Culture of Classroom Silence (2005).
