Zusammenfassung: | Described by one reviewer as 'one of the most perfect books ever written on theoretical astronomy', this work in Latin by the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855), the 'Prince of Mathematicians', derived from his attempt to solve an astronomical puzzle: where in the heavens would the dwarf planet Ceres, first sighted in 1801, reappear? Gauss' predicted position was correct to within half a degree, and this led him to develop a streamlined and sophisticated method of calculating the effect of the larger planets and the sun on the orbits of planetoids, which he published in 1809. As well as providing a tool for astronomers, Gauss' method also offered a way of reducing inaccuracy of calculations arising from measurement error; the primacy of this discovery was however disputed between him and the French mathematician Legendre, whose Essai sur la théorie des nombres is also reissued in this series |

Mathematics Originally published in. - Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Described by one reviewer as 'one of the most perfect books ever written on theoretical astronomy', this work in Latin by the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855), the 'Prince of Mathematicians', derived from his attempt to solve an astronomical puzzle: where in the heavens would the dwarf planet Ceres, first sighted in 1801, reappear? Gauss' predicted position was correct to within half a degree, and this led him to develop a streamlined and sophisticated method of calculating the effect of the larger planets and the sun on the orbits of planetoids, which he published in 1809. As well as providing a tool for astronomers, Gauss' method also offered a way of reducing inaccuracy of calculations arising from measurement error; the primacy of this discovery was however disputed between him and the French mathematician Legendre, whose Essai sur la théorie des nombres is also reissued in this series Gauß, Carl Friedrich 1777-1855 (DE-588)104234644 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1809 gnd rswk-swf Orbits Orbit determination Least squares Bewegung (DE-588)4006311-2 gnd rswk-swf Bahnelement (DE-588)4326738-5 gnd rswk-swf Himmelsmechanik (DE-588)4127484-2 gnd rswk-swf Himmelskörper (DE-588)4159892-1 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4135952-5 Quelle gnd-content Himmelskörper (DE-588)4159892-1 s Bewegung (DE-588)4006311-2 s 2\p DE-604 Gauß, Carl Friedrich 1777-1855 (DE-588)104234644 p Himmelsmechanik (DE-588)4127484-2 s 3\p DE-604 Bahnelement (DE-588)4326738-5 s Geschichte 1809 z 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-108-14311-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511841705 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
